Notes: The iron ores of the Siegerland-district are found in lodes occurring in schists of Lower Devonian age. In the course of the geophysical exploration for these ores, an attempt was also made to clarify the structure and the tectonics of the substratum of the sedimentary rock formations by seismic reflection measurements from the surface. Reflections were recorded in great numbers from layers of Silurian and Devonian age. The form of the folding of the strata derived therefrom corresponds well with that deduced from geological investigations. Beyond that, correlatable reflections were recorded from horizons down to a depth of nearly 25 000 m. It turned out that the iron ore lodes known from the mine workings occur almost vertically above those places where greater dislocations appear in the deepest substratum, and which geologically could be interpreted as fracture zones. The results so far obtained seem to be indicative of the fact that the tectonics of the deepest substratum and the occurrence of ore deposits are related to each other.

Notes: The iron ores of the Siegerland district are found in lodes occurring in schists of Lower Devonian age. These lodes, normally dipping almost perpendicularly, could be traced only by seismic reflection measurements underground, up to distances of approximately 500 m. The geophones were attached to the walls of the galleries. The frequencies of the recorded longitudinal and transverse waves ranged from 200 to 500 c.p.s. By this method a new siderite lode was discovered.

Notes: Resonant interaction of an electron beam with a relativistically strong electromagnetic wave of right-hand circular polarization propagating collinearly along a dc magnetic field B0 has been studied analytically. The analysis has taken the full nonlinearity of the relativistic effect into account. The result of the relativistic effect on the resonant interaction is to cause the wave intensity to oscillate at a frequency near (Ω0/2ω)1/2ωp/γ0. It is found that there is an upper bound on the transverse velocity of the electron achievable through the interaction.

Notes: A compact 15-channel bolometer array that views plasma emission tangentially across the midplane has been installed on the PBX tokamak to supplement a 19-channel radially viewing poloidal array. By comparing these diagnostics, poloidal asymmetries in the emission profile can be determined. The detector array consists of 15 discrete 2-mm-diam thinistors, a mixed semiconductor material, which has a high temperature coefficient of resistance. Each active detector is operated in tandem with an identical blind detector in a Wheatstone bridge configuration. The variation in voltage owing to the change in resistance is amplified and stored on a CAMAC transient recorder. The detectors are sensitive to accumulated heat and software has been written to smooth and differentiate the signals so that instantaneous power can be calculated. In addition, the cooling time constants are determined in vacuo (3.1 s) so that the loss of heat from the detector during the course of a shot can be compensated. The detectors were relatively calibrated with a tungsten–halogen filament lamp and were found to vary by ±7%. The irradiance profiles are inverted and the power density is typically in the 0.1 to 0.5-W/cm3 range.

Notes: An eight-shot pneumatic pellet injection system has been developed for plasma fueling of the tokamak fusion test reactor (TFTR). The active cryogenic mechanisms consist of a solid hydrogen extruder and a rotating pellet wheel that are cooled by flowing liquid-helium refrigerant. The extruder provides solid hydrogen for stepwise loading of eight holes located circumferentially around the pellet wheel. This design allows for three different pellet diameters: 3.0 mm (three pellets), 3.5 mm (three pellets), and 4.0 mm (two pellets) in the present configuration. Each of the eight pellets can be shot independently. Deuterium pellets are accelerated in 1.0-m-long gun barrels with compressed hydrogen gas (at pressures from 70 to 105 bar) to velocities in the range 1.0–1.5 km/s. The pellets are transported to the plasma in an injection line that incorporates two stages of guide tubes with intermediate vacuum pumping stations. A remote, stand-alone control and data-acquisition system is used for injector and vacuum system operation. The eight-shot injection system has been installed and operated on TFTR. The design features, operation, and performance characteristics of the system are described.

Notes: A convective instability that leads to the filamentation of large-amplitude Alfvén waves and generates nonoscillatory spatially growing density fluctuations is investigated by using a two-fluid plasma model. Based on linear perturbation analysis for a four-wave parametric coupling process, the dispersion relations of the instability for both a right- and left-hand circularly polarized Alfvén pump are derived. They are then solved numerically for the dependences of the threshold fields and growth rates on the wavenumber k of the nonoscillatory mode, the beta of the plasma, and the frequency of the pumps, for both right- and left-hand circularly polarized Alfvén pumps. The relevance of the proposed instability with some observations in the space plasmas is discussed.

Notes: The importance of epistasis for forage performance and quality traits was studied in early maturing European maize (Zea mays L.) breeding materials. Sixty-six three-way crosses (3W), 33 of the flint x (dent · dent) and 33 of the dem × (flint · flint) type, were compared with the mean of their respective non-parental single crosses (〈inlineGraphic alt="inline image" href="urn:x-wiley:01799541:PBR185:PBR_185_mu1" location="equation/PBR_185_mu1.gif" extraInfo="missing"/〉) using data obtained in six environments. For each of the 11 traits examined, at least 6 out of the 66 three-way crosses displayed significant (P 〈 0.05) epistatic deviations, calculated as 〈inlineGraphic alt="inline image" href="urn:x-wiley:01799541:PBR185:PBR_185_mu1" location="equation/PBR_185_mu1.gif" extraInfo="missing"/〉– 3W. Averaged over crosses and environments, epistatic deviations were highly significant (P 〈 0,31] for 8 trails, but of minor importance except for grain yield. In general, the variance of epistatie deviations was appreciably smaller than the variance of genotype × environment interactions. Highly significant correlations occurred among epistatie deviations for silking date, dry matter content of ear, and dry matter yield of grain and stover. The reliability of predicting the performance of three-way crosses from 2W as opposed to assessing them directly was investigated as a function of the number of test environments. Disturbing e fleets of epistasis on prediction only became important under intense testing (〉 3 or 4 environments), With fewer test environments, both procedures were almost equivalent, due to a smaller influence of genotype × environment interaction on the 〈inlineGraphic alt="inline image" href="urn:x-wiley:01799541:PBR185:PBR_185_mu1" location="equation/PBR_185_mu1.gif" extraInfo="missing"/〉 values, Epistasis is concluded to be of minor importance with regard to the optimum type of hybrid for forage use.
