Notes: The purpose of this study was to define the normal anatomic structures in the canine larynx with magnetic resonance images. TI-weighted images were taken in the sagittal and transverse planes. The MR images were obtained comparing MR images to dissection planes. Magnetic resonance imaging provides excellent anatomic detail of laryngeal structures. Therefore, it is of value for diagnostic imaging of some respiratory diseases in the dog.

Notes: : To identify bacteria associated with spoilage in oysters, changes in both the load and composition of the bacterial community occurring in storage were followed. Oyster spoilage was accompanied by a 100-fold increase in the number of CFU. Molecular analysis revealed that a large proportion of the bacteria present in spoiled oysters possessed an intergenic 16S-23S rDNA spacer of approximately 400 bp. A spacer with the same size was also found in spoiled oysters of different origin and dates of harvest. The bacterial strains containing this spacer may constitute a common cause of the oyster spoilage. These strains were salt-dependent marine Pseudoalteromonas species and were probably present in oysters before harvest.

Notes: Abstract We investigate the perturbation of the Drazin inverse of a closed linear operator recently introduced by second author and Tran, and derive explicit bounds for the perturbations under certain restrictions on the perturbing operators. We give applications to the solution of perturbed linear equations, to the asymptotic behaviour ofC 0-semigroups of linear operators, and to perturbed differential equations. As a special case of our results we recover recent perturbation theorems of Wei and Wang.

Notes: Abstract Plant secondary compounds can prevent feeding by phytophagous insects or, if ingested, can be poisonous to them. Less attention has been paid to the additional effects they have on feeding behavior when they are only weakly deterrent or not deterrent at all. Experiments were carried out on the generalist grass-hopperSchistocerca americana. Individuals were presented either with two cakes of high-quality artificial food with a single deterrent compound added or with two cakes, each with a different added deterrent compound. The deterrents consisted of single plant secondary compounds that were either marginally or strongly deterrent. There were profound differences in feeding behavior between those individuals given identical and those given different cake types, including longer feeding bouts on single cakes when a choice of different cake types was available. The behavioral effects demonstrate that the presence of secondary compounds in one food can influence the patterns of feeding on other available foods and suggest that such chemicals could impact foraging activities in a complex manner.

Notes: Abstract Objective: This study investigated the perception of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in ambulatory patients with eating disorders in relation to the severity of eating symptomatology and psychological comorbidity. Methods: One hundred ninety-seven study patients were consecutively recruited at the Eating Disorders Outpatient Clinic. Short Form-36 items (SF-36), a generic HRQoL questionnaire, the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-40), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD) were used to measure different aspects of HRQoL. The results of the SF-36 were compared with the norms of the Spanish general population for women 18–34 years of age. Results: Patients with eating disorders were more dysfunctional in all areas of the SF-36 compared with women in the general population. There were no differences among the eating disorder diagnostic groups. Higher scores on the EAT-40 and the HAD were associated with a perception of greater impairment on all SF-36 subscales. Conclusion: The evaluation of HRQoL in these patients confirms the impact of these disorders on daily life in areas not directly related to eating disorders. The SF-36 is useful for discriminating among different levels of severity of eating disorders and other psychological comorbidities of these patients.

Notes: Abstract Monoclonal antibody ior egf/r3 is a IgG2a, recognizes the epidermal growth factor receptor. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of the99mTc-labeled ior egf/r3 for the detection of epithelial tumors, its metastasis and its recurrences. The sensitivity by organs was: brain 100%, diegestive tract 90%, head and neck 89%, lung 84% and breast 79%. The overall sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of the immunoscintigraphic imaging were 84.1%, 100%, 86.5%, 100% and 52.4%, respectively. Immunoscintigraphy with99mTc-ior egf/r3 is useful for the diagnosis and follow-up of epithelial tumors.

Notes: Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the secretory IgA (SIgA) antibody response to Naegleria fowleri (Nf) in individuals living in a parasite endemic area. Saliva and serum samples were obtained from both healthy subjects and patients suffering from a respiratory illness (chronic bronchitis or rhinitis) and were analyzed by immunoblot assay. SIgA from the patients' samples recognized more intensely a greater number of Nf proteins than did SIgA from the healthy control group. The proteins more frequently recognized were those with a molecular weight of 171, 107, 102, 62, 50, 46, and 10 kDa. Some IgA antibodies recognized proteins from Nf and Entamoeba histolytica (Eh) of similar molecular weight. These results suggest that some of those antibodies could have been elicited by a previous intestinal infection with Eh. Through the common mucosal immune system the IgA B-cells activated by Eh antigens can be disseminated to all the mucosae, including the nasal mucosa. SIgA antibodies recognizing Nf proteins, induced either by specific immunization or by cross-reaction, could participate in the resistance to the infection, probably by inhibiting the adherence of Nf trophozoites to the nasal mucosa.

Notes: Abstract We present two experimental models consisting of two groups of 16 dogs each in which we performed venous and arterial autotransplants in the urethra using the same surgical technique and the same sutures. As a substitute for the urethra, 4 to 5 cm of either superficial femoral artery or vein were used. Clinical, radiologic, and histologic evaluations were performed 15, 30, 90, and 180 days following the autotransplants. Total re-epithelialization of the venous graft, good micturitional flow, and suitable distension of the neourethra during micturition were observed. the arterial graft also underwent total re-epithelialization, but was very rigid, so that the caliber of the neourethra decreased over a period of several months, causing a number of complications after 6 months of follow-up. We compare this transplant technique with the generally used techniques for hypospadias repair such as the use of skin, bladder mucosa, tunica vaginalis, and ureter. The results were statistically analyzed.

Notes: Abstract A comparison of hip fracture rates among nine countries (Canada, Chile, Finland, Hong Kong, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland, the United States and Venezuela) was made using national hospital discharge data for the same time interval. The rates increased by age and were higher for females than males in all nine countries. When based on overall discharge rates, the incidence of hip fracture appeared high in three European countries (Finland, Scotland and Sweden) relative to the other countries. However, when transfer cases were removed and adjustments made for differences in case definition, the risk of hip fracture for both men and women was much similar among the four European and two North American countries, but higher than in Hong Kong. Rates of fracture were lowest in Venezuela and Chile, varying from three to 11 times less than for residents of the other seven countries. Although there are limitations in using hospital discharge data as a measure of incidence, the wide variation in the risk of hip fracture across the nine countries appears real but differences between North American and north European countries may not be as great as previously reported. Such cross-national comparisons may help clarify different etiologic hypotheses.
