Notes: The fine-focusing capability of a current-carrying, "active" plasma lens has been demonstracted for the first time. A cylindrically symmetric argon discharge plasma pulsed with an oscillating current of over 20 kA in amplitude served as a current conducting medium. With this plasma lens has been demonstrated for the first time. A cylindrically symmetric argon discharge plasma pulsed with an oscillating current of over 20 kA in amplitude served as a current conducting medium. With this plasma lens the diameter of an incident 2.2-GeV gold ion beam from the linear accelerator UNILAC at GSI-Darmstadt was focused from initially 10 to about 0.25 mm, at a focal length of only 140 mm. The gradient of the azimuthal magnetic field exceeded 120 T/m. The striking features of this first-order and strong-focusing plasma lens favor its use as a precise high-gradient focusing device for high-energy charged particles.

Notes: Abstract Aims/hypothesis. Both patients with Type II (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus and normoglycaemic, insulin resistant subjects were shown to have an increased lipid content in skeletal muscle, which correlates negatively with insulin sensitivity. Recently, it was shown that during a hyperinsulinaemic euglycaemic clamp interstitial glycerol was reduced not only in adipose tissue but also in skeletal muscle. To assess whether lipolysis of muscular lipids is also regulated by low physiological concentrations of insulin, we used the microdialysis technique in combination with a 3-step hyperinsulinaemic glucose clamp. Methods. Nineteen lean, healthy subjects (12 m/7 f) underwent a glucose clamp with various doses of insulin (GC I = 0.1, GC II = 0.25 and GC III = 1.0mU · kg–1· min–1). Two double lumen microdialysis catheters each were inserted in the paraumbilical subcutaneous adipose tissue and in skeletal muscle (tibialis anterior) to measure interstitial glycerol concentration (index of lipolysis) and ethanol outflow (index of tissue flow). Results. During the different steps of the glucose clamp, glycerol in adipose tissue was reduced to 81 ± 7 % (GC I), 55 ± 8 % (GC II) and 25 ± 5 % (GC III), respectively, of basal. In contrast, glycerol in skeletal muscle declined to 73 ± 5 % (GC I) and to 57 ± 6 % (GC II) but was not further reduced at GC III. Tissue flow was higher in the skeletal muscle and remained unchanged in both compartments throughout the experiment. Conclusion/interpretation. This study confirms the presence of glycerol release in skeletal muscle. Lipolysis in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue are suppressed similarly by minute and physiological increases in insulin but differently by supraphysiological increases. Inadequate suppression of intramuscular lipolysis resulting in increased availability of non-esterified fatty acids, could represent a potential mechanism involved in the pathogenesis of impaired glucose disposal, i. e. insulin resistance, in muscle. Notes: Abstract A study of prompt neutrino events from 400 GeV protons on a beam-dump is presented. The ratio of electron- to muon-neutrino rates is 0.86±0.14, in agreement withe−μ universality. The anti-neutrino to neutrino flux ratio is $$\bar v_\mu /v_\mu = 0.81 \pm 0.19$$ . The absolute rates and distributions observed are shown to be in quantitative agreement with the known properties of charmedquark production in hadron collisions.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The goal of this paper is to contribute to conceptual issues associated with the construct of everyday competence. After the description of reasons for the increased attention which everyday competence has found within gerontology, the first section of this work serves to shed light on six research traditions with relevance for everyday competence: (1) Research on everyday cognitive processes, (2) ADL/IADL research, (3) leisure time research, (4) coping research, (5) time budget research, and (6) ecological gerontology research. In the second section, two influential models of everyday competence, namely those of Margret Baltes and Sherry Willis, are discussed. Finally, an integrative conception of everyday competence, which is aimed to combine aspects of the six research traditions with elements of the two models of everyday competence, is suggested.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary This study considers findings of psychological gerontology as particularly important for geriatric rehabilitation research. Its concrete aim was to describe the course and outcome of geriatric rehabilitation based on a wide range of success criteria, to explore the influencing role of age, sex, and diagnosis as well as to describe the variability pattern of success. The data were gathered from a sample of 100 older adults who underwent treatment in a German inpatient rehabilitation unit. Participants were assessed across five measurement occasions by use of a state-of-the-art geriatric assessment and psychological data collection part. The results underline, for one, that significant improvements of functional as well as psychological capacity were obtained. Second, age and sex played practically no role concerning the course of the success criteria, whereas diagnosis revealed some statistically meaningful effects. Third, it was found that the variability of success was characterized by a relatively homogenous pattern of gain with regard to functional criteria; with respect to psychological variables, heterogeneity was more pronounced and some participants show loss as well, a chance for further improvement of the geriatric rehabilitation.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In this four-part review article, an update covering the gero-psychological research since 1988 in German speaking countries is given as follows: Cognitive development in old age (part I), personality development in old age (part II), social relations in old age (part III), age-related tasks, burdens, and border situations (part IV). In part IV of the update presented in this issue, research contributing to a competence perspective of old age and aging is summarized under four main headings: (1) Independence, everyday life, and everyday competence; (2) aging in spatial, physical, and technical environments; (3) health and coping with illness; (4) coping with death and dying. The article ends with a general discussion considering as well the findings of our survey addressing gerontologists from German speaking countries.

Kommunikation.
Notes: Summary This paper starts with the insight that today's intervention gerontology provides a very broad scope of strategies with impact on the course of normal aging as well as aging with competence losses. Also, it is assumed that this impact of intervention gerontology will grow even further in the future. In the following, current intervention gerontology research is discusses by particularly highlighting its connection with basic gerontology findings, the contextual view of aging, the interdisciplinary orientation, and the methodological standard. With respect to the potential of gero-intervention in the future, three prototypical domains are considered: (1) health and everyday competence, (2) living environments, and (3) communication.
