    Notes: We demonstrate the fabrication of a long-wavelength laser on a (211) InP substrate, with the expectation of reducing threshold current density. We found that InGaAsP single quantum wells (SQWs) could be fabricated with good optical properties provided the SQW layers were not made too thin. A laser that had an unstrained multiple-quantum-well active layer emitting at 1.3 μm was fabricated on a (211)A InP substrate. Its threshold current density was 900 A/cm2, which is comparable to the value for the same type of laser on a (100) substrate. These results suggest that long-wavelength lasers with satisfactory quality can be fabricated on a (211)A substrate. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We propose anti-phase direct bonding and report on the first demonstration of its application to device fabrication. Cross-sectional observation by high-resolution transmission electron microscope showed that InP and GaAs wafers bonded at the atomic level and the misfit dislocations were localized at the bonding interface. Then InP-based 1.55 μm wavelength lasers were fabricated on GaAs. The performance of the lasers was approximately equal to that of the lasers formed by in-phase direct bonding. Moreover, stable operation was possible for more than 1000 h at 50 °C. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We examine the direct bonding of (001) InP and (110) GaAs and demonstrate its application to device fabrication. Cross-sectional observation shows that these wafers can be united without generating dislocation. (001) InP-based 1.55-μm wavelength lasers are fabricated on (110) GaAs. The light–current characteristics of the lasers are almost identical to those of lasers fabricated on (001) GaAs, while the turn-on voltage is higher by about 0.4 V due to the large band discontinuity. The results show that the direct bonding technique is promising for allowing new concept "free-orientation integration.'' © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: : Sakuranetin (compound 1) from bark of Prunus jamasakura showed a suppressive effect on umu gene expression of SOS response in Salmonella typhimurium TA1535/pSK1002 against the mutagen furylfuramide. Gene expression was suppressed 83% at a concentration of 0.70 μmol/mL. The ID50 value of compound 1 was 0.30 μmol/mL. This compound showed the suppression of 4NQO, MNNG, Trp-P-1, AfB1, activated Trp-P-1, and UV irradiation-induced SOS response. The methylated derivative (compound 2) of compound 1 showed less suppressive effect against all mutagens than compound 1. The antimutagenic activities of compounds 1 and 2 against furylfuramide, Trp-P-1, and activated Trp-P-1 were assayed by the Ames test using the S. typhimurium TA100 strain.

    Notes: Summary Plasma leptin level is known to correlate with the degree of obesity. To determine the influences of renal fuction and insulin resistance on plasma leptin concentrations, we measured plasma leptin concentrations and performed the euglycaemic hyperinsulinaemic clamp studies in 57 patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus with a wide range of renal function. In simple regression analyses, plasma leptin concentration showed significant positive correlations with percentage of body fat measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, body mass index, waist to hip ratio and fasting plasma insulin. Leptin level was higher in females than males. Multiple regression analyses indicated that percent body fat, waist to hip ratio, plasma insulin, gender and renal function (1/creatinine), but not insulin sensitivity, were significant and independent determinants of plasma leptin level. These results suggest that plasma leptin level is regulated or affected by multiple factors including renal function. Insulin resistance appeared to increase leptin levels indirectly by raising plasma insulin. [Diabetologia (1997) 40: 676–679]

    Notes: Summary Calcification is almost invariably associated with atherosclerotic plaque lesions. Recent data suggest that plaque calcification is an active, regulated process similar to osteogenesis. In order to clarify the mechanism of plaque calcification, we developed an in vitro model of vascular calcification by utilizing bovine vascular smooth muscle cells (BVSMCs). This model is useful in that diffuse and massive calcification can be induced within 2 weeks and thereby biochemical analyses of vascular calcification can be performed. We have analyzed several aspects of vascular calcification by using this model and demonstrated as follows: 1) in vitro calcification of BVSMCs is regulated by calciotropic hormones and BVSMCs are equipped with a unique autocrine and/or paracrine system regulating calcium metabolism. 2) Sodium-dependent phosphate cotransport plays a crucial role in BVSMC calcification as well as in mineralization of skeletal tissues. 3) BVSMCs acquire osteoblastic phenotype under certain conditions. Finally, we discuss the roles of macrophages in the development of atherosclerotic calcification. Interferon-γ (INF-γ) induces gene expression of 25-hydrovitamin D-1α-hydroxylase (1αOhase) and its activity in macrophages. Since 1αOhase can locally convert 25-hydroxyvitamin D into 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2D), an active metabolite of vitamin D, it is suggested that local production of 1,25(OH)2D by macrophages may promote atherosclerotic calcification. Moreover, macrophages may be involved in the phenotypic changes of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) to acquire calcifying capacity. Therefore, the phenotypic changes of VSMCs in atherosclerotic plaque may contribute to the development of atherosclerotic calcification.
