Notes: Low-temperature photoluminescence experiments were performed on high-purity InP substrates as a function of heat treatment, flat-profile ion implantation and subsequent annealing procedures. Whereas the well resolved near band edge luminescence proved the superior substrate quality, up to 6 sharp luminescence lines (some of them not reported so far) and one shallow broad-band emission were observed after Si3N4 deposition and various annealing procedures. From the temperature dependence of the luminescence peak intensities the activation energies of the novel lines were determined and discussed in terms of excitons bound to processing-induced complex defects. These assignments are supported by the observation of a strong enhancement of the luminescence after low dose Ar+ ion implantation.

Notes: Photoluminescence experiments under resonant excitation have been performed at low temperature in Mg+-implanted bulk InP. The energy difference between the ground 1S3/2 and excited 2S3/2 states of the Mg acceptor is accurately measured by two-hole spectroscopy of Mg-acceptor bound exciton. Selective excitation of donor-acceptor pairs luminescence allows the identification of a set of 2P3/2 and 2P5/2 excited states. The measured values to be compared with similar published data obtained for Zn and C represent an additional step in the process of accurate identification of acceptors in InP.

Notes: The borderline syndrome is one of the most severe disturbances of psychosomatic dermatology. Patients with borderline syndrome are situated ‘on the border’ of psychosis, neurosis and personality disorders. The skin as a borderline organ carries a symbolic role. The clinical picture includes artefactual skin diseases due to self-mutilation by conscious or unconscious cutting, and rubbing, scratching or para-artefactual manipulations of pre-existing dermatoses. Leading symptoms of the borderline syndrome are poor impulse control, emotional instability and poor ego strength with low frustration tolerance and unstable personal relationships. We present the case of a 38-year-old female patient with borderline syndrome suffering from para-artefactual skin diseases of the face and a massive hyperhidrosis of the hands and feet. Within 9 months she was treated in four acute psychiatric hospitals and by 12 psychiatrists and psychotherapists. Early and accurate diagnosis and high-quality, sophisticated long-term therapy are necessary.

Notes: The nucleation and disappearance of current filaments in homogeneously slightly doped semiconductors during avalanche breakdown at low temperatures is quantitatively evaluated in terms of a minimum and maximum value of the filament current. Both values arise from a model based on the power balance in the system. Experimental results obtained by the two-dimensional imaging of the filament configurations in n-GaAs and p-Ge agree quantitatively with the predictions of our power balance model.

Notes: Mercuric-ion-induced gene expression was studied in Arabidopsis thaliana Columbia wild type. Rosettes of plants grown for 21 d on agar medium supplemented with 20, 30 and 40 µm HgCl2 were pooled and used to isolate cDNAs of induced genes by suppression subtractive hybridization. Of the 576 clones isolated initially, 31 turned out to be mercury-induced by Northern hybridization. However, kinetic studies using cDNA arrays clearly showed that seven genes were exclusively mercuric-ion-induced, 14 were induced by mercury but also affected by a diurnal rhythm, and 10 clones were only modulated by the day–night cycle. The expression levels of the metal-induced genes increased from 1·5-fold to 10-fold. Functional classification resulted in genes encoding proteins for the photosynthetic apparatus and for the antioxidative system. In addition, unexpected genes, whose connection to mercury ion stress is not evident, were identified.

Notes: Abstract Two-dimensional imaging of current filament patterns generated in homogeneousn-type GaAs during avalanche breakdown at low temperatures is reported. The self-generated formation and subsequent growth behavior of distinct single- and multifilament configurations could globally be visualized by means of a scanning electron microscope equipped with a liquid-helium stage. From local conductivity measurements in the smallest possible filaments (typical diameter of about 10 μm) carrier mobilities as high as about 4·106 cm2/Vs at 4.2 K were estimated. Such high-mobility filament channels may become interesting for applications in ultrafast electronic circuits.

Notes: Abstract We present experimental investigations on the spatio-temporal nonlinear current flow in the post-breakdown regime of p-germanium at liquid-helium temperatures. The basic nonlinear effects are characterized in terms of the underlying semiconductor physics, taking into account the influence of different experimental parameters.

Notes: Abstract Age is a key parameter when deducing the history of plutonium material, i.e. the plutonium produced in the nuclear reactors. This is of vital importance, when a smuggled plutonium sample has been seized and the origin has to be determined. A methodology is described which allows accurately to determine the age of plutonium material by thermal ionisation mass spectrometry using independent parent/daughter relations. This has been demonstrated for Reference Materials of known ages as well as for real samples. The already established method using gamma spectrometry is compared to this.
