    Notes: A M-H loop model for Ba-ferrite particulate media is introduced where a modified Stoner–Wohlfarth model is used as a magnetization reversal model. It is confirmed that this model can be applied for read/write simulation of Ba ferrite. Using this model, the read/write performance of Ba-ferrite media is investigated and compared with that of acicular particulate media. The results indicate that: (i) For high-density recording, longitudinally oriented Ba ferrite is superior to acicular particulate media because of its high coercive squareness S*; (ii) to improve read/write performance of the Ba-ferrite in use today, narrowing of anisotropy field distribution is effective; and (iii) perpendicularly oriented Ba ferrite has good read/write performance only at narrow head-medium spacings.

    Notes: Effect of ball-forming conditions on the microstructure and the hardness of balls has been investigated in order to obtain soft balls suitable for a reliable ball-bonding process using copper wire. Copper balls formed in a room-temperature shield gas are found to be harder by 6 Hv than fully annealed copper wires of the same purity. This is caused by many dislocation loops which are generated in balls due to inclusion of gaseous impurities from the atmosphere and due to rapid solidification. On the other hand, copper balls formed in a shield gas heated above 175 °C are found to be softer by the amount of 4.5 Hv than balls formed in a room-temperature shield gas. This is due to disappearance of dislocation loops caused by the reduction of solidification rate and by elimination of gaseous impurities from the balls during solidification. Impurities, especially oxygen, are found to have a strong influence on the hardening of copper balls. From these results, we conclude that copper balls formed in a shield gas heated at 175 °C are suitable for mass production.

    Notes: A high-resolution laser spectroscopy system for refractory elements with an argon-ion- sputtering atomic beam source was constructed, and it has been demonstrated that the sputtering method is extremely useful as an atomic beam source for high-resolution laser spectroscopy to measure hyperfine structures and isotope shifts for refractory elements, such as Hf, Ta, and W. This source produced intense neutral atomic beams of more than 1010 atoms/s for these elements, and the yield was easily controlled by adjusting the argon-ion current and the acceleration voltage. Resonance linewidths were 32, 66, and 48 MHz for Hf, Ta, and W, respectively, which are sufficient to measure the hyperfine structures and the isotope shifts in optical transitions. With this system, the signal-to-noise ratio reached more than 106. In addition, the temperature of the sputtered atoms found was rather low compared to the kinetic energy given to the atoms.

    Notes: Abstract. Activation spectra of photochemical reactions were measured by a flash spectrophotometer in leaves having varying chlorophyll contents at different stages of greening. The increase of chlorophyll concentration up to 30 nmol cm-2 elevated the rates of photochemical reactions at all wavelengths of light used, and was found to be produced by an increase in the amounts of reaction centres. Further accumulation of chlorophyll up to 40 nmol cm-2 was associated with an increase in light-harvesting chlorophyll, an improved rate of photochemical reactions around 600 nm and at 700 nm, and self-absorption and screening effects where chlorophyll absorbed maximally (400–450 nm and around 680 nm).

    Notes: In order to examine the transverse distribution of scattered light and chlorophyll fluorescence in intact rice leaves, a micro-fluorescence imaging system was devised using a microscope, a CCD camera with an image intensifier, an Ar and a He-Ne laser light source, an image processor, and a microcomputer. A laser light was projected vertically on to the surface of a rice leaf segment at a cut-edge, and scattered light and induced fluorescence were observed at the cut-section from a 90° angle to the axis of the laser beam. The intensity of scattered light showed a maximum at several micrometres depth from the leaf surface and a steep gradient afterwards. Fluorescence reached a maximum crossing with the decline curve of the scattered light. The maximum of fluorescence measured at 741 nm was observed at a greater depth from the leaf surface than that at 687 nm, suggesting that part of the fluorescence of the longer wavelength was emitted due to absorption of fluorescence of the shorter wavelength. Profiles of the scattered light and the chlorophyll fluorescence depended on leaf anatomy.

    Notes: The fermentation process for frozen doughs using freeze-sensitive (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Kyowa for sweet bread; S. cerevisiae, FC for white bread) and freeze-tolerant (S. cerevisiae, YF for sweet bread) yeasts was traced by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Grain network structures of baked breads were also visualized by MRI. Prefermentation before freezing, punching and remolding, or resheeting and molding treatments increased loaf volume by 10 to 110% for the baked breads using freeze-tolerant yeast, while these treatments decreased loaf volume by 70% using freeze-sensitive yeast. The first fermentation before freezing and the second fermentation with punching or resheeting after thawing are useful for obtaining good quality breads from frozen dough using freeze-tolerant yeast.

    Notes: : Fermentation processes of bread doughs were traced by MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), which suggests that punching and rounding treatment after the first fermentation promotes the development of elasticity and extensibility of gluten fibrils that makes thin grain walls of the pores connecting between adjacent pores with small holes, and a thin smooth crust after baking. While pore generation was small, expansion of the dough was low, gluten networks formed were large and coarse, and gluten fibrils were undeveloped in the frozen dough. Prefermentation could not essentially alleviate the inferior properties of the frozen dough. The grain structures of the bread using frozen dough were characterized by thick network walls without the connection between pores and a thick crust with rough surface.

    Notes: Xanthogranulomas develop in adults as well as in children; however, adult cases with multiple lesions are very rare. We report an adult who developed both multiple cutaneous lesions on the face and trunk and lesions on the conjunctiva, oral mucosa and genitalia. We believe that this is the first such case described.

    Notes: We report a 52-year-old patient with cutaneous angiomas on the trunk in association with angiotropic lymphoma involving the nervous system. The lesional skin showed proliferation of atypical B cells in the capillaries. The diagnosis of angiotropic lymphoma with neurological deficits is often difficult before death. Thus, skin biopsy in this case proved to be diagnostic of the central nervous system disease without the risk of brain biopsy. The diagnosis of angiotropic lymphoma in the future may be achievable by biopsy of coincidental angiomas.

    Notes: Abstract. A Coulomb excitation experiment was carried out with a 66Zn beam bombarding a ${}^{\rm nat}$ Pb target. Four E2 matrix elements and the quadrupole moment of the 21 + state were derived with the least-squares search code GOSIA. According to the B(E2) values, the ground band can be interpreted as a quasirotational band. It was found that the 21 + level has a positive quadrupole moment, which may be interpreted as a soft triaxial deformation.
