    Notizen: The diffusion of Al in polycrystalline ion-implanted α-Ti has been studied in the temperature range 600–850 °C using ion-beam techniques. Diffusion couples were created by ion implantation. The time-dependent concentration profiles were monitored by the use of the nuclear resonance broadening technique through the 27Al(p,γ) 28Si reaction. The effect of the implantation energy and implanted dose on the diffusivity of Al has been investigated. The value of 1.62±0.11 eV for the activation energy and (7.4±9.8)×10−7 cm2/s for the frequency factor was obtained. The present result is discussed in the framework of the Ti diffusion barrier used in semiconductors.

    Notizen: Sixteen metals implanted to saturation with 300-keV N2+ ions have been studied using nuclear resonance broadening and Rutherford backscattering techniques to profile the implanted concentration. Blisters due to the implanted nitrogen were observed in Mg, Al, Ti, V, Cr, Nb, Mo, Ta, W, and AISI 304 steel but not in Cu, Zr, Ag, Hf, and Au. The nominal saturation concentration at maximum varied from 50 to 60 at. % for all cases except for Cu, Ag, and Au, where it was 20 at. %. The surface hardness was generally increased by a factor between 1.2 and 2.3. However, no increase was observed for Mo, Ag, and Au. The mononitride formation in Ti, Zr, and Hf was verified by x-ray diffraction. The formation of blisters and diffusion in the preparation of nitrides is discussed.

    Notizen: Abstract For a systematic prediction of the radiation-enhanced outdiffusion occurring during implantation, the use of a model based on the effect of vacancy flow on diffusion is described. The model agrees reasonably well with experiments in all twentysix measured cases. For the systematic understanding of the radiation enhanced outdiffusion, an approximative diagram based on the activation energy of self-diffusion is constructed for all pure elements and its application possibilities are discussed.

    Notizen: Abstract The diffusion coefficients of nitrogen in N-implanted polycrystalline Ni have been deduced. Both bulk and Ni-evaporated samples implanted with nitrogen were annealed at 150–500° C. The nitrogen profiles were probed using the nuclear resonance broadening technique. The value of 0.99±0.12 eV for the activation energy and (3.0 −2.8 +40 )×10−6 cm2/s for the frequency factor were obtained for implanted N in bulk Ni. The solubilities for both the bulk and evaporated Ni samples are given. In evaporated Ni nitrogen migration is enhanced due to the defects arising during evaporation.

    Notizen: Abstract Two Earth-directed coronal mass ejections (CMEs), which were most effective in energetic (∼1–50 MeV) particle acceleration during the first 18 months since the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) launch, occurred on April 7 and May 12, 1997. In the analysis of these events we have deconvoluted the injection spectrum of energetic protons by using the method described by Anttila et al. In order to apply the method developed earlier for data of a rotating satellite (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites, GOES), we first had to develop a method to calculate the omnidirectional energetic particle intensities from the observations of Energetic and Relativistic Nuclei and Electrons (ERNE), which is an energetic particle detector onboard the three-axis stabilized SOHO spacecraft. The omnidirectional intensities are calculated by fitting an exponential pitch angle distribution from directional information of energetic protons observed by ERNE. The results of the analysis show that, compared to a much faster and more intensive CMEs observed during the previous solar maximum, the acceleration efficiency decreases fast when the shock propagates outward from the Sun. The particles injected at distances 〈0.5 AU from the Sun dominate the particle flux during the whole period, when the shock propagates to the site of the spacecraft. The main portion of particles injected by the shock during its propagation further outward from the Sun are trapped around the shock, and are seen as an intensity increase at the time of the shock passage.

    Notizen: Abstract The lifetimes for the second excited state in21Na and for the second to ninth excited states in23Na have been determined with the DSA method using Ta2O5 and Ta as stopping materials. In the DSA analysis the experimental stopping parameters determined in the present and earlier works were utilized. The reanalysis of some earlier studies has brought very good consistency to the scattered results. Comparison of the observed transition strengths with theory has also been made.
