Notes: Abstract: Seventeen analogues of l-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine were synthesized using three reaction pathways: condensation of phenols with 1-methyl-4-piperidone, reaction of Grignard reagents with 1-methyl-4-piperidone followed by dehydration of the product, and aminomethylation of olefins. The identity of the products of synthesis was established by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy. and elemental analysis. Thirteen analogues were shown to inhibit the oxidation of benzylamine by bovine plasma amine oxidase. Increasing the length of the aliphatic chain of N-substituted analogues resulted in increased inhibition. In 4-phenyl-substituted analogues, both the position and electronic character of the substituent group affected the degree of inhibition.

Notes: Experiments with washed suspensions of holotrich protozoa (Isotricha spp. and Dasytricha ruminantium) showed that both organisms have an efficient 0,-scavenging capability (apparent Km values 2.3 and 0.3 μM, respectively). Reversible inhibition of H2, production increased almost linearly with increasing O2 up to 1.5 μM; higher levels of O2 gave irreversible inhibition. In situ determinations of H, CH4, O2, and CO2, in ovine rumen liquor, using a membrane inlet mass spectrometer probe, indicated that O2, was present before feeding at 1-1.5 μM and decreased to undetectable levels (〈0.25 μM) within 25 min after feeding. A transient increase in O2. concentration after feeding occurred only in defaunated animals and resulted in suppression of CH4 and CO2 production. The presence of washed holotrich protozoa decreases the O2 sensitivity of CH4 production by suspensions of a cultured methanogenic bacterium Methanosarcina barkeri. It is concluded that holotrich protozoa play a role in ruminal O2 utilization as well as in the production of fermentation end products (especially short-chain volatile fatty acids) utilized by the ruminant and H, utilized by methanogenic bacteria. These hydrogenosome-containing protozoa thus both control patterns of fermentation by influencing O2 levels, and are themselves regulated by the low ambient O2 concentrations they experience in the rumen.

Notes: Abstract. A large soil block was constructed to determine the importance of preferential flow routes compared with matric flow pathways at a pasture site in mid-Devon. The sandy loam soil was well structured and uniform. The soil block measured 5 m×3 m×1 m and was instrumented with an array of 54 tensiometers, TDR wave guides and suction samplers connected to an in situ chloride analysis system. Four steady state irrigation experiments were conducted with a range of rainfall intensities. During each experiment chloride and nitrate tracers were applied and the patterns of movement were observed. Although the application of tracer was uniform and the soil was relatively homogeneous, there was large variability across the block in terms of time taken to reach the peak concentration (TPC) and the peak concentration itself. About 44 samplers operated at the greatest intensities (10–2 mm h−1) and only 35 at the smallest (1 mm h−1). No relationship was found between TPC and depth. The fastest TPC and largest concentrations were associated with the greatest rainfall intensities. Relative importance of the individual water pathways was a function of soil heterogeneity: parts of the soil block were highly active with several pathways having short TPCs and conductivities in excess of 4 m day−1 whereas other areas had longer TPCs and conductivities of 1–2 m day−1. The pattern was also dynamic, with conductivities of the pathways changing through time, though most of the faster pathways maintained their greater conductivities for more than one year.

Notes: Abstract. Boreholes have been constructed at eight sites on the Permo-Triassic Sandstone and Chalk aquifers to assess the extent of chemical and microbiological contamination emanating from unlined farm manure stores. Slurry along fracture faces in the Chalk was found on cores taken from beneath two stores. Porewaters from the Chalk sites and one of the Sandstone sites were discoloured and showed high concentrations of nitrate, ammonium and organic carbon to depths in excess of 10 m. Although Cryptosporidia and Escherichia coli O157 were found in many of the cattle slurry lagoons, neither were found in the aquifer material beneath. The self-sealing of unlined slurry stores is seen as a crucial step in minimizing leakage. A simple mass balance shows farm boreholes near to contaminant sources are at greater risk than public supply wells. Contaminant modelling shows discontinuing use of an unlined farm manure store will lead to little difference in solute concentrations over the short to medium term. Groundwater is most at risk where the water table is shallow since direct hydraulic connection between the lagoon base and the water table considerably increases the rate of vertical migration. This is of greatest significance for pathogens that are thought to be relatively short lived in the subsurface. Under the majority of situations minimal threat is posed to potable groundwater drinking supplies.

Notes: Abstract The dry matter (DM) production of Trifolium repens, T. ambiguum and the backcross 1 (BC1) and backcross 2 (BC2) hybrids with T. repens as the recurrent parent were compared in mixtures with an intermediate heading variety of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) under a cutting-only management over 3 harvest years. Plots of parental legume species and backcross hybrids were established from small plantlets and oversown with the companion grass. In the first harvest year, the DM yield of clover in T. repens plots was greater than that in the BC2 plots and both greater than in the BC1 plots, whilst in the second and third harvest years differences between the DM yield of clover in the T. repens and the BC1 and BC2 hybrid plots were small. Similar results were obtained for the DM yield of total herbage. There were also differences in seasonal growth in the first harvest year, when yield of clover in T. repens plots was greater than in the BC1 and BC2 hybrid plots at early cuts but not at later cuts. Few differences in seasonal growth were observed between parental species and hybrids in subsequent harvest years. Comparison of above- and below-ground biomass showed more DM in roots and rhizome of clover in the backcrosses than in the T. repens plots in the second harvest year but differences were less evident in the third harvest year. The clover in the backcross hybrid plots also had fewer stolon growing points per quadrat than the T. repens plots, but the BC2 had more than the BC1 plots. The exploitation of these hybrids in breeding programmes as a strategy to improve the persistence and drought tolerance of white clover is discussed and implications for forage production considered.

Notes: We report a case of systemic lupus erythematosus associated with C1q deficiency. Our patient presented at the age of 6 years with cutaneous lupus. She later developed Raynaud’s phenomenon, non-scarring alopecia, oral ulceration and grand mal seizures due to cerebral vasculitis. Complement C3 and C4 levels were consistently normal during flares of her lupus and haemolytic activity of her complement was absent, suggesting a deficiency of an early component of the complement cascade. No C1q could be detected.

Notes: The degree of homogeneity of ferric oxide in magnetic tapes has been characterized using photoacoustic techniques. The method is based on excitation of the sample by a modulated laser beam and subsequent detection of its acoustic response via a condenser microphone. The acoustic response is dependent on the local thermal variations in the sample, and is a direct measurement of the distribution uniformity of the particulate metal oxide in the sample. Results of this study provide a potential means for the rapid evaluation of the quality of magnetic recording media.

Notes: The Co-ZSM-5 and Co-ThO2-ZSM-5 catalysts are a particularly promising group of bifunctional zeolite catalysts used for the conversion of synthesis gas to gasoline-range hydrocarbons. Catalytic properties of these materials, such as activity and selectivity, depend upon the amount of the cobalt on the medium-pore zeolite ZSM-5, as well as upon the presence of promoters such as ThO2. These studies were undertaken to ascertain the effect of thoria upon the magnetic and structural nature of these catalysts. Zero-field nuclear magnetic resonance measurements have been made on a series of zeolite cobalt and cobalt-thoria catalysts with three different concentrations of Co (3, 6, and 9 wt. %). The catalysts were prepared by making physical admixtures of precipitated cobalt, or cobalt-thoria, and ZSM-5. The amount of thoria introduced ranged from 0.5 to 1.5 wt. %. After reduction of the catalyst samples, the normal metallic cobalt resonance line at 213.0 MHz (fcc) and the fault lines at 215.5 and 218.6 MHz were observed. In the unpromoted catalysts, a line at 210.7 MHz, which is lower than the fcc line frequency, and another line at 221.6 MHz, which is higher than the hcp line frequency, were observed. When the promoter thoria was added, there was a systematic absence of the hcp line in the unused catalyst. Previous catalytic tests had shown that small amounts of the promoter thoria (0.4 wt. %) significantly increase the liquid hydrocarbon yields. The change in catalytic behavior can be related to the changes in crystallite species and crystallite size.
