    Notes: Wavelet spectrum and bispectrum techniques are applied to study the development of temporal turbulence induced by a confinement toroidal magnetic field in a toroidal magnetoplasma created by radio frequency waves. For low magnetic fields the plasma is roughly uniform and the analyzed electrostatic linear frequency spectra are essentially determined by the driven radio frequencies. However, by increasing the toroidal magnetic field, gradients in the plasma radial profiles and broader frequency spectra are observed. Thus, spectral components with frequencies higher than those injected in the plasma are excited. Moreover, this variation of magnetic field also induces nonlinear phase coupling between low frequency coherent peaks and continuous high frequency spectral components. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Common statistics of turbulent electrostatic fluctuations observed at the plasma edge and scrape-off layer are analyzed in three tokamak devices that have different configurations. The statistics of experimental data collected using fixed sampling time is the same than the statistics of the time for which the oscillation return to a specified reference interval of values. This observation, in addition to the finding of power-scaling laws for some average quantities with respect to either the sampling time or the size of the reference interval, suggests that turbulence on tokamaks have recurrent characteristics, typical of a recurrent chaotic low-dimensional system. Furthermore, the first Poincaré recurrence time and other dynamical tools are used to simulate the mentioned fluctuation statistical properties. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Recently a new intermolecular potential for C60 was derived from ab initio calculations. Using this new interaction potential we numerically study the phase diagram of fullerite. Several numerical techniques are used in order to ascertain the correctness of the results. We predict that C60 can be found in the liquid state for densities between 0.468 and 0.845 nm−3 and temperatures between 1881 and 2012 K. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The thermodynamic properties of coexisting solid and fluid phases are computed for the Lennard-Jones system. We make absolute Helmholtz free energy calculations for fluid and solid reference thermodynamic states and we compute differences in free energy relatively to these states in order to obtain thermodynamic properties in a range of temperatures and densities. For the free energy difference calculations we use a previously developed method [A. L. Ferreira and M. A. Barroso, Phys. Rev. E 61, 1195 (2000)]. Our results are compared with others available in the literature. Furthermore, we present absolute values of the Helmholtz free energy along solid–fluid coexistence lines. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A method for analyzing volatiles such as alcohols (1-octen-3-ol), aldehydes (trans-trans-2,4-decadienal, trans-2-nonenal), terpenols (linalool, terpineol, and oxides), and isoprenoids (β-damascenone, β-ionone, 1,1,6-trimethyl-1,2-dihydronaphtalen and vitispirane) on white wines using solid phase microextraction has been developed. The analytes were extracted directly from the headspace of a constant volume of wine using 7 different fibers coated with different stationary phases compared with a classic dichloromethane extract. The best extraction efficiency was obtained with a divinylbenzene/Carboxen/polydimethylsiloxane, 50/30 μm. Sample volume, time, and temperature of the extraction were optimized and the matrix effect studied. The limits of quantification varied between 0.013 and 1.81 μg/L. The r-values for linearity studies varied between 0.9761 and 0.9999. Among the compounds measured, some are related to the aroma of young white wine, such as linalol, terpineol, β-damascenone, whereas others, for example, 1-octen-3-ol, trans-trans-2,4-decadienal, trans-2-nonenal, 1,1,6-trimethyl-1,2-dihydronaphtalene, and vitispirane, are related to evolution characteristic of white wines.

    Notes: The age and growth of the Iberian cyprinid Barbus bocagei Steindachner 1865, were studied in six different streams in the River Tagus basin. The fish were aged by scale reading and their lengths were back-calculated. Age structures were similar at four sites (R. Ocreza, R. Rio Frio, R. Sever and R. Canha), where six to seven age classes were present. In contrast, 10 age groups were detected in the R. Erges and 11 in the R. Nabão. The slopes (b) of the length–weight regressions did not differ significantly between the six populations. The growth of the populations was compared with that available throughout the study area (another two sites). Classification analysis of the lengths-at-age by sites matrix revealed three major groups (by decreasing order of growth rate): 1, Belver Reservoir; 2, R. Tagus, Nabão and Erges; 3, Rio Frio, Sever, Canha and Ocreza. We hypothesize that highly stressful conditions in the summer diminish growth rates and longevity in the Rio Frio, Canha and Ocreza rivers and that lower temperatures all year round could limit growth in the Sever. Higher growth rates were observed in warm-water streams with more stable environmental conditions (group 2) and in a highly productive lentic system (group 1). Among the sites that were studied, the one that revealed the highest growth performance by B. bocagei was the most polluted, the R. Nabão. This offers evidence of the species plasticity and of its successful adaptation to streams displaying significant degradation in water quality.

    Notes: Abstract Usually, an increase in the temperature of operation leads to a reduction in the voltage of operation of commercial water electrolyzers. The present work analyzes this effect in connection with the overpotential of the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions on electrodeposited nickel and some nickel-based codeposits which under normal operational conditions have shown good electrocatalytic characteristics. Results on pure nickel are also presented for comparison. A pressure chamber, adequate for electrochemical studies at high temperatures and pressures is described.

    Notes: Abstract Mother rats nursing large litters are hyperphagic, aggressive towards conspecifics, and show less freezing behaviour than non-maternal animals. These naturally occurring adaptations resemble those elicited by benzodiazepine treatment in virgin rats, indicating a common neurochemical change in the brains of mother rats and benzodiazepine-treated virgins. In line with this hypothesis, it was found that three functional benzodiazepine antagonists (FG 7142, pentylenetetrazol, caffeine) decreased food intake, lowered aggression and strengthened freezing in lactating mother rats. These psychopharmacological observations support the idea that GABA neurotransmission is enhanced during motherhood in the rat.
