    Notes: We successfully synthesized a superconducting intercalated graphite fiber for the first time. Intercalation was carried out for a highly graphitized fiber (diameter 150 μm) with potassium mercury at an elevated temperature. The fiber consists of a pure first-stage structure C4KHg and exhibits a superconducting transition at 1.4 K.

    Notes: We have studied the performance of single-layer polymer light-emitting diodes based on a polyfluorene derivative. Hole-only devices show low currents; however, double-carrier devices show high currents and high efficiencies, implying that the presence of electrons in the device enhances hole injection. By numerical modeling, we show that this behavior is consistent with the presence of a barrier to electron extraction at the anode which causes an increased field for hole injection due to the buildup of electrons at the barrier. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report a 52-year-old patient with cutaneous angiomas on the trunk in association with angiotropic lymphoma involving the nervous system. The lesional skin showed proliferation of atypical B cells in the capillaries. The diagnosis of angiotropic lymphoma with neurological deficits is often difficult before death. Thus, skin biopsy in this case proved to be diagnostic of the central nervous system disease without the risk of brain biopsy. The diagnosis of angiotropic lymphoma in the future may be achievable by biopsy of coincidental angiomas.

    Notes: Abstract A series of WO3-promoted Cr2O3-based catalysts were prepared and tested for the simultaneous dehydrogenation and isomerization of n-butane to isobutene. It is found that a Cr2O3/WO3–ZrO2 system is an effective catalyst for this reaction; however, the catalytic behavior is dependent on Cr2O3 and WO3 contents, space velocity and temperature. 10 wt% Cr2O3/20 wt% WO3–ZrO2 can give high initial conversion and isobutene selectivity, but it deactivates rapidly due to the variation of surface properties and pore structure caused by carbon deposition.

    Notes: Summary The enzymatic production of S-lactoylglutathione was studied by applying glyoxalase I to glycerol-grown cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Escherichia coli cells dosed with Pseudomonas putida glyoxalase I gene. The glyoxalase I in S. cerevisiae cells was markedly induced when the cells were grown on glycerol. The activity of the enzyme in glycerol-grown cells was more than 20-fold higher compared with that of the glucose-grown cells. By using extracts of glycerol-grown yeast cells, about 5 mmol/1 (2 g/l) of S-lactoylglutathione was produced from 10 mM methylglyoxal and 50 mM glutathione within 1 h. The extracts of E. coli cells carrying a hybrid plasmid pGI423, which contains P. putida glyoxalase I gene, showed approximately 170-fold higher glyoxalase I activity than that of E. coli cells without pGI423. The extracts were used for production of S-lactoylglutathione and, under optimal conditions, about 40 mmol/l (15 g/l) of S-lactoylglutathione was produced from 50 mM methylglyoxal and 100mM glutathione within 1 h.

    Notes: Abstract Optical emission intensities in the sheath region are not the same as those in the plasma region. This is because not only the electron density, but also the electron temperature, is different between the two regions. In this study a Cu rod is inserted into the plasma, and the rod potential is altered from the ground potential to a negative potential with a frequency of 20 Hz. The optical emission ray comes from the sheath region when the negative potential is applied, but comes form the plasma region at the ground potential. We can immediately detect the difference of the emission intensities between the plasma and the sheath regions by a lock-in amplifier. The pre-amplifier is placed prior to the lock-in amplifier. By using this pre-amplifier the output signal of the lock-in amplifier can be adjusted to zero for any emission line. the emission spectra from a CF4+O2 plasma are measured. A small amount of Ar gas and/or N2 gas is added and the output signal of the lock-in amplifier is adjusted to zero for either the Ar emission line or the N2 emission line. In a fluorine-contained plasma the F emission intensity normalized by the Ar one has been widely used in order to obtain the F density. This validity is confirmed by the present experiment. It is also confirmed that the CO emission intensity normalized by that of N2 is proportional to the CO density. The metastable states play an important role in the optical emission intensities of CO and N2 molecules.
