    Notes: Abstract: When rat brain mitochondria are incubated with [γ-32P]ATP, there is a rapid (10 s) phosphorylation of proteins designated E, and F of M.W. 42,000 and 32,000, respectively. Although [γ-32P]ATP was the preferred substrate for protein F, a small amount of labeling did occur with [γ-32P]GTP. Phosphorylation of E1 was absolutely ATP-dependent. On the other hand, a 32,000 M.W. protein from rat liver mitoplasts (mitochondria devoid of an outer membrane) was highly phosphorylated when [γ-32P]GTP was used but not at all phosphorylated within short time periods with [γ-32P]ATP. Both the ATP-labeled brain phosphoprotein F and GTP-labeled liver protein migrated to identical positions on high-resolution two-dimensional polyacrylamide gels, and both contained acid-labile phosphoryl groups. Furthermore, both phosphoproteins were identified as the autophosphorylated subunit of succinyl-CoA synthetase (SCS, EC 6.2.1.4) by using antibody directed against purified GTP-dependent porcine SCS. However, immunotitration experiments with anti-porcine SCS revealed that ATP- and GTP-labeled protein F in brain differed in their interactions with antibody, suggesting that in rat brain mitochondria two different forms of the enzyme exist that are immunologically distinct and differ in substrate specificity. When mitochondrial preparations enriched in particular brain cell or subcellular types were examined, an unequal distribution of E1 and the two forms of protein F were observed. A brain subfraction containing neuronal cell body and glial mitochondria (CM) was found to contain E1 and approximately equal amounts of the ATP- and GTP-dependent forms of protein F. Light synaptic mitochondria(SM1) contained ATP-dependent protein F almost exclusively and were depleted in E1. Dense synaptic mitochondria (SM2) are rich in the ATP form of SCS but also contain low amounts of the GTP enzyme.

    Notes: Cadmium (Cd) inputs and losses from agricultural soils are of great importance because of the potential adverse effects Cd can pose to food quality, soil health and the environment in general. One important pathway for Cd losses from soil systems is by leaching. We investigated loss of Cd from a range of contrasting New Zealand pasture soils that had received Cd predominantly from repeated applications of phosphate fertilizer. Annual leaching losses of Cd ranged between 0.27 and 0.86 g ha–l, which are less than most losses recorded elsewhere. These losses equate to between 5 and 15% of the Cd added to soil through a typical annual application of single superphosphate, which in New Zealand contains on average 280 mg Cd kg−1 P. It appears that Cd added to soil from phosphate fertilizer is fairly immobile and Cd tends to accumulate in the topsoil. The pH of the leachate and the total volume of drainage to some extent control the amount of Cd leached. Additional factors, such as the soil sorption capacity, are also important in controlling Cd movement in these pasture soils. The prediction of the amount of Cd leached using the measured concentrations of Cd in the soil solution and rainfall data resulted in an overestimation of Cd losses. Cadmium concentrations in drainage water are substantially less than the current maximum acceptable value of 3 µg l−1 for drinking water in New Zealand set by the Ministry of Health.

    Notes: The end-of-range compaction induced by megaelectronvolt proton irradiation of fused silica has been imaged by atomic force microscopy. A maximum surface compaction of 50 nm was measured for an ion dose of 4.0×1015ions cm−2. A linear correlation between ion dose and compaction has been observed in the range of 1.0 to 4.0×1016 ions cm−2. When the samples were left at room temperature over a period of several months, the amount of compaction appeared to decrease significantly which suggests some temporal annealing of the waveguides has occurred. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary. Polyglycolic acid (PGA) sutures and traditional catgut were compared in 190 patients undergoing episiotomy. Each group was also randomly allocated to a double blind comparison of therapy with oral proteolytic enzymes (Chymoral) and placebo. The combination of Chymoral and polyglycolic acid sutures was shown to reduce the level of pain, assessed subjectively, and there was a significant reduction in analgesic requirements in the Chymoral/PGA group.

    Notes: The incidence of fetal breathing movements (FBM), fetal trunk movements (FTM), and total fetal activity (TFA) was assessed in 25 pregnancies complicated by maternal diabetes mellitus; 20 mothers had been juvenile insulin dependent diabetics, 4 were diagnosed during pregnancy (one of whom required insulin) and there was one other who was changed from chlorpropamide to insulin during the first trimester of pregnancy. Thirty-minute records were made postprandial between 32 and 38 weeks making a total of 161 recordings. There were 15 well-controlled insulin-dependent diabetic women with uncomplicated pregnancies; and in this group the mean percentage incidence of FBM was 60±25 (SD) per cent, FTM 16±10 (SD) per cent and TFA 73±22 (SD) per cent. The mean breathing rate per minute was 53±12 and the mean number of movements per 30-minute period 29±18. The incidences of FBM and TFA were significantly higher than those found in postprandial recordings in normal pregnancies. There was only one recording out of 115 where the incidence of TFA fell below 10 per cent. The mean percentage incidences of FBM, FTM and TFA were similar in the four uncomplicated pregnancies in which diabetes was diagnosed during pregnancy. The mean percentage incidence of TFA was significantly lower in the six pregnancies with obstetric complications, and levels of TFA below 10 per cent correlated well with abnormal cardiotocograph traces or fetal distress in labour.

    Notes: The incidence of fetal breathing movements (FBM)*, fetal trunk movements (FTM), and total fetal activity (TFA) was assessed in 100 normal pregnancies between 28 weeks and term. One 30-minute recording was made from each patient between 0900 and 1700 hours. The mean incidences of FBM, FTM and TFA were respectively 37±26 (SD) per cent, 18±10 per cent, and 53±24 per cent. The mean breathing rate was 48±12 per minute, and the mean number of movements per 30-minute study period was 29±15. There was a slightly higher incidence of FBM postprandially, but this failed to reach statistical significance. The mean incidence of FBM was lower before 31 weeks and after 40 weeks, compared to that between 31 and 40 weeks, when the values of FBM and FTM were constant. The breathing rate was directly related to gestational age. The mean number of movements per 30-minute study period was inversely related to gestational age, but the duration of movements increased progressively towards term, so that the incidence of FTM was constant throughout the third trimester. There was only one recording of TFA below 10 per cent.
