Notes: A genetic map was constructed using DNA-based markers in a barley mapping population derived from the cross ‘Tankard’בLivet’, that was developed to explore the genetic control over grain damage in spring barley cultivars. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) were located for husk skinning, gape between the lemma and palea and splitting of the fused pericarp/testa/aleurone tissues. The QTL accounted for 70% of the genetic variation in Split and 60% of the genetic variation in Gape and Skinning. The QTL were clustered on chromosomes 1H, 4H, 5H, 6H and 7H. QTL analysis indicates the possibility of transgressive segregation for grain splitting and so the breeding of lines with more extreme splitting. This is of concern to the malting industry as, without extensive phenotypic assessment, such lines could be commercialized, as was the case of Landlord, and put malting barley supplies at risk. These findings are discussed in relation to the genetic control over traits including grain length and width.

Notes: Background. Helicobacter pylori lipopolysaccharide (LPS) affects pepsinogen release by a nontoxic mechanism. We hypothesized that this effect was characteristic of the organism and related to the clinical status of the strain.Materials and methods. LPS was isolated from 11 H. pylori strains whose pathogenic profile was known and four other nongastric bacteria. The effects of luminal LPS on guinea pig gastric mucosal pepsinogen release was evaluated using the Ussing chamber technique. CCK-8 (10−9M) was used as a positive control.Results. H. pylori LPS dose-dependently stimulated pepsinogen release with a maximal stimulation at 250 µg/ml (~4500%; p 〈 .001 vs. control). LPS from other Helicobacter or Campylobacter species had no effect on pepsinogen release. ANOVA demonstrated significant differences in the efficacies of pepsinogen release between the 11 clinical H. pylori strains (p 〈 .0001) despite the fact that they were all cagA+ and 90% had the cytotoxic vacA subtype s1. Physical and chemical disruption of the LPS suggested that both the structure and the carbohydrate composition of this molecule may play a critical role in pepsinogen release. Polymyxin B partly (p 〈 .03) inhibited and dephosphorylation completely inhibited (p = .0002) LPS-stimulated pepsinogen release.Conclusion. Pepsinogen release is an innate property of all cagA+H. pylori LPS. The structure of the molecule and composition of side-chains are important in this response which appears to be partially lipid A driven.

Notes: An airborne magnetic survey of an area of 580 km2 centred on Gosses Bluff was flown in 1968. This survey formed part of a joint project by the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources and the United States Geological Survey to evaluate the hypothesis that Gosses Bluff is of impact origin.Analyses of the magnetic data show that shallow sources of magnetic disturbance flank the Bluff on its southern side. Interpretation of the magnetic anomalies indicates their source to be shock-melted breccias of possible Jurassic age.

Notes: The hypophysial duct, a hollow tube of tissue linking the pituitary gland and the buccal cavity, was found in adults of all the galaxiid genera examined except Aplochiton and Paragalaxias. The pituitary structure in these genera, however, indicated that the duct was probably once present and has been subsequently lost. The duct was absent in the other galaxioid families, Retropinnidae and Lepidogalaxiidae. Mapping the distribution of the duct onto a DNA sequence-based phylogeny suggests that the embryological duct was retained in a galaxiid ancestral to Aplochiton, with subsequent losses in Aplochiton and Paragalaxias.

Notes: Abstract A profile of the sensory characteristics of greensoybean and consumer intent of purchasing the productwere determined. Thirty-one green soybean genotypesfrom maturity groups III to VI harvested between R6and R7 were frozen, boiled, shelled, and evaluated forcolor, texture, sweetness, nuttiness, beaniness, oiliness, aftertaste and overall eating quality bythree sensory panels. Results showed highly significant (p〈0.01) variabilities among the genotypes in allsensory parameters and highly significant correlationsamong several parameters. The green soybeans, whenboiled, ranged from lightly green to green, wereslightly resistant to chewing, slightly nutty, slightly beany, not oily, imparted a pleasantaftertaste and had a fairly good overall eatingquality. The green soybeans would be potentiallyacceptable as a vegetable in the frozen state and foruse in recipes. When selecting genotypes forproduction, consideration should be given to thesensory attributes of the genotypes, because there wassignificant variability among the characteristics ofthe green soybeans, and several characteristicstogether enhanced the overall acceptability of thevegetable soybeans. To further increase theacceptability of green soybeans as a vegetable, geneticists need to consider breeding a vegetablesoybean that has as many desirable sensory attributesas possible.

Notes: Abstract  Malaria poses a threat across several continents: Eurasia (Asia and parts of Eastern Europe), Africa, Central and South America. Bradley (1991) estimates human exposure at 2,073,000,000 with infection rates at 270,000,000, illnesses at 110,000,000, and deaths at 1,000,000. Significant mortality rates are attributed to infection by the parasite Plasmodium falciparum, with an estimated 90% among African children. A worldwide effort is ongoing to chemically and pharmacologically characterize a class of artemisinin compounds that might be promising antimalarial drugs. The U.S. Army is studying the efficacy and toxicity of several artemisinin semi-synthetic compounds: arteether, artemether, artelinic acid, and artesunate. The World Health Organization and the U.S. Army selected arteether for drug development and possible use in the emergency therapy of acute, severe malaria. Male Rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were administered different daily doses of arteether, or the vehicle alone (sesame oil), for a period of either 14 days, or 7 days. Neuropathological lesions were found in 14-day arteether treated monkeys in the precerebellar nuclei of the medulla oblongata, namely: (1) the lateral reticular nuclei (subnuclei magnocellularis, parvicellularis, and subtrigeminalis), (2) the paramedian reticular nuclei (subnuclei accessorius, dorsalis, and ventralis), and the perihypoglossal nuclei (n. intercalatus of Staderini, n. of Roller, and n. prepositus hypoglossi). The data demonstrate that the simian medullary precerebellar nuclei have a high degree of vulnerability when arteether is given for 14 days at dose levels between 8 mg/kg per day and 24 mg/kg per day. The neurological consequences of this treatment regimen could profoundly impair posture, gait, and autonomic regulation, while eye movement disorders might also be anticipated.
