    Notes: Blue sensitive photodetectors have been fabricated from thallium bromide (TlBr) crystals for scintillation detection. Lu2SiO5 (LSO)/TlBr detectors consisting of 3 mm×4 mm TlBr photodetectors coupled to 2 mm×2 mm×4 mm long LSO scintillators have demonstrated energy resolutions of 34.5% and 25.5% full width at half maximum for 511 keV and 662 keV γ rays, respectively. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Quantitative evaluation of damage accumulation including crack initiation and propagation is one of the major concerns of industrial plant management and plant licence renewal. In order to develop a novel non-destructive testing (NDT) and non-destructive evaluation (NDE) technique for damage evaluation, the induced-current focused potential drop (ICFPD), originally proposed for a defect inspection, was employed. In this study, ICFPD was successfully applied to a non-destructive damage evaluation based on crack measurements. The measurements were taken on fatigued specimens with various degrees of fatigue damage. The ICFPD can clearly detect and differentiate the damage accumulation processes including crack initiation, small crack growth and subsequent macroscopic crack growth. In order to demonstrate the applicability of damage evaluation assessments based on small crack measurements, ICFPD has also been applied to creep–fatigue loading where damage evaluation of a fusion reactor material is based on small crack measurements by the ICFPD technique and a novel methodology is proposed.

    Notes: A new ray-tracing simulation program, RIGTRACE, has been developed specifically for the X-ray optics range. It traces consecutively each ray, following its path from the source to the observation plane, and treats diffraction by a monochromator crystal by adopting the Darwin–Prins theory so that it may be seen how rays of slightly different energies and incident angles reach the plane. It is also possible to treat the case of the laboratory system, in which the optical elements are disposed close to each other. Examples of the application are provided.

    Notes: Abstract  We have isolated two types of complementary DNA (cDNA) sequences showing high similarity with the DNA-binding domain in heat shock factors (HSFs) from a cDNA library of tobacco suspension-cultured cells (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. BY2). These two genes, NtHSF1 and NtHSF2, showed low similarity (37%) with each other. Both contained the typical conserved regions of HSFs (DNA-binding domains, leucine zipper repeats, nuclear localization signals, and tryptophan repeats). Transcripts of NtHSF1 and NtHSF2 were detected even at the normal temperature. The recombinant NtHSF1 and NtHSF2 proteins expressed in Escherichia coli bound specifically to a 183-bp DNA fragment of the Arabidopsis thaliana HSP18.2 promoter containing three sets of head-to-head and tail-to-tail repeats of the conserved pentamer unit (nGAAnnTTCnnGAAn).
