    Notes: We have performed ab initio algebraic diagrammatic construction [ADC(3)] Green's function calculations of the valence photoemission spectra of PF3 and NiPF3. We obtained overall good agreement with experiment for both the free PF3 molecule and the PF3 molecule chemisorbed on a Ni(111) metal surface. A comparison to NiCO shows that there are certain similarities between NiPF3 and NiCO, not only in the σ donor–π acceptor bonding mechanism in the ground state, but also in the metal–ligand CT excitations associated with the creation of a valence hole in the ligand. However, it appears that the many-body effect, such as the configuration interactions in the final ionized state, seems to be weaker for NiPF3 than for NiCO, judging from the main line spectral intensity. The quasiparticle picture of the 4e level breaks down completely as in the case of the 1π level of NiCO.

    Notes: The carbon and oxygen 1s core excitation spectra of free CO and NiCO are calculated by ab initio 1h1p/1h1p and 2h2p/2h2p configuration interaction (CI) method using an extended basis set. We employed the ground state as well as core–hole relaxed orbitals. For free CO, we obtain a reasonably good description of the electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) spectra. The present interpretation of the spectra agrees with others. For NiCO, we obtain a reasonably good description of the near edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra of the CO/Ni(100) system and that of the electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) spectra of the gas phase Ni(CO)4 . We show the existence of the Rydberg-derived additional excited states in the NEXAFS spectra of the chemisorbed molecule and give an interpretation of these states. The disappearance of the giant shake-up satellite in the NEXAFS spectra of the adsorbate is explained in terms of the hindrance of the cooperative core–hole screening mechanism in the π* resonantly excited state. The core–hole screening mechanism in the σ* resonantly excited state is also investigated.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé   Vingt-trois genoux de 21 patients âgés de plus de 40 ans avec des ménisques latéraux disco¬ıdes furent examinés par radiographie. L’âge moyen des patients était de 59.7 ans (40–78 ans). Aucun des patients ne montra de symptômes avant l’âge de 40 ans et seulement 12 genoux devinrent symptomatiques dans le compartiment latéral, bien qu’un déchirement du ménisque latéral disco¬ıde fut remarqué par arthrographie sur 21 des 23 genoux. Un varus fut observée plus fréquemment qu’un valgus. Une ostéosclérose sous-chondrale fut remarquée plus souvent dans le compartiment médial. D’autre part, des incidences élevées d’ostéophytes marginales dans le compartiment latéral ainsi que des anomalies morphologiques (bombement ou aplatissement) du le plateau tibial latéral furent aussi signalées par radiographie.
    Notes: Abstract   Twenty-three knees of 21 patients over 40 years of age with discoid lateral menisci were examined by radiography.The mean age of the patients was 59.7 years (range: 40–78 years). No patient had symptoms before the age of 40 and only 12 knees gave symptoms from the lateral compartment, although tears of a discoid lateral meniscus were diagnosed by arthrography in 21 of the 23 knees. Varus inclination occurred more frequently than valgus inclination. Subchondral bone sclerosis was more common in the medial compartment. However, high incidences of marginal osteophytes in the lateral compartment and morphological anomalies (cupping or flattening) of the lateral tibial plateau were revealed by radiography.

    Notes: Abstract. This paper presents a practical new lens design for acoustic microscopy. The new lens provides a factor-of-2 higher resolution than currently available commercial lenses for acoustic microscopy, and a reduction in the influence of surface roughness on the image formation. Analysis, computer simulations, and demonstration examples provide convincing evidence that new lens design works efficiently. Whereas most current lens designs emphasize the use of longitudinal waves, the designs presented here focus on the use of transverse or shear waves. In the present study, two kinds of lens designs have been developed: One is a ``center-sealed'' acoustic lens used at the center frequency of 400 MHz and 1 GHz for use with acoustic tone bursts, and the other is a ``high-NA acoustic lens'' used in the center frequency of 30 MHz for use with short pulses. The center-sealed acoustic lens has its center area aperture sealed to prevent longitudinal waves from traveling into the sample so that the acoustic image is substantially composed of shear wave components. The ``high-NA'' acoustic lens has an aperture with a large aperture angle for exciting shear waves in the object. In this study, the mechanisms of image formation with both of these lenses are described and their features are evaluated.

    Notes: Summary It was demonstrated that G-bands are unequivocally present in plant chromosomes, in contrast to what had been formerly believed by plant cytologists. Maize chromosomes prepared by an enzymatic maceration method and treated with trypsin or SDS showed clear G-bands spreading along the chromosomes. The most critical point during the G-banding procedures was the post-fixation with glutaraldehyde solution. Banding patterns were processed by using the chromosome image analyzing system and a clearer image was obtained. Gbanding technique and the image manipulation method described here can be applied to many plant species, and would contribute new information in the field of plant cytology and genetics.

    Notes: Summary Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of wallerian degeneration in the brain stem was studied in 30 hemiplegic patients within 12 months of ictus. As early as 25 days after the ictus, decreased signal intensities on proton-density (PD)-weighted images were observed in the brain stem ipsilaterally. This hypointensity gradually approached an isointense stage during 70–80 days after the ictus, abnormal intensities were not detected in any pulse sequence. We termed this phenomenon “Fogging effect of wallerian degeneration”. In later stages, at least 81 days after the ictus, increased signal intensities on T2-weighted images, with or without decreased signal intensities on T1-weighted images, were observed in the brain stem, ipsilaterally. Finally, at least six months after the ictus, mild shrinkage of the ipsilateral brain stem was newly detected on the T1-weighted images. MR imaging has proven to be a sensitive diagnostic modality for evaluating wallerian degeneration in the brain stem.

    Notes: Abstract Magnetic resonance (MR) images of seven patients with olivary degeneration caused by cerebellar or brain stem haemorrhages were reviewed. In four patients with cerebellar haemorrhage, old haematomas were identified as being located in the dentate nucleus; the contralateral inferior olivary nuclei were hyperintense on proton-density- and T2-weighted images. In two patients with pontine haemorrhages, the old haematomas were in the tegmentum and the ipsilateral inferior olivary nuclei, which were hyperintense. In one case of midbrain haemorrhage, the inferior olivary nuclei were hyperintense bilaterally. The briefest interval from the ictus to MRI was 2 months. Hypertrophic olivary nuclei were observed only at least 4 months after the ictus. Olivary degeneration after cerebellar or brain stem haemorrhage should not be confused with ischaemic, neoplastic, or other primary pathological conditions of the medulla.

    Notes: Summary MR images of four patients with a thickened filum terminale showing a fat signal are presented. There were no related symptoms and no evidence of tethering. The thickened fatty filum terminale seemed to be a developmental anomaly and without clinical significance. As the incidence of this anomaly was 0.24% in our series, knowledge of its possible presence of this anomaly is important for routine reviews of MR image.

    Notes: Summary Serial magnetic resonance (MR) imagings of two autopsied patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) are presented. Both patients showed a dramatic progression of brain atrophy. The initial MR imagings were, however, interpreted as normal except for localized mild cortical atrophy in one patient. When a normal MR image is obtained in a demented middle-aged or aged patient, CJD may still need to be ruled out: follow up MR imaging may be useful.
