Notes: Laser ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry has been used to probe Nd:YAG laser ablation products from a new graphite-like material of (BC2N)n composition. Neutral species mainly composed of one, two, and three atoms were detected. A center-of-mass velocity of 1.2×105 cm/s was obtained for the expansion of the products. An influence of collision-induced reactions is suggested for the product generation. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Coiled carbon fibers were prepared by pyrolysis of acetylene activated using a Ni catalyst and a small amount of impurities at 600–800 °C. It was found that the addition of a small amount of sulfur or phosphorus compound impurities in acetylene was indispensable for the growth of coiled carbon fibers. Among the sulfur compounds used, thiophene was the most effective for growing coiled carbon fibers with uniform coil diameter and producing a high yield (about 50% coils). Similar results were obtained with phosphorus trichloride.

Notes: Transcranial Doppler and continuous measurements of jugular venous oxygen saturation were used to monitor intra-operative cerebral haemodynamics in a patient with Takayasu's arteritis who underwent carotid revascularisation. These techniques were found to be of clinical value for detection of cerebral hypoperfusion and assessment of the effects of therapeutic intervention.

Notes: Summary  Choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC) is a rare malignant brain tumour which occurs predominantly in childhood. We present the cases of two infants with CPC. One, a 6-month-old boy with the tumour in the right lateral ventricle, who died of a postoperative intracranial haemorrhage and severe gastrointestinal bleeding, and the other, a 9-month-old boy with the tumour in the fourth ventricle, who has been well without recurrence for 12 months after total removal in combination with chemotherapy using cisplatin and VP-16 and local radiotherapy. In the 54 CPC cases in children under 2 years of age including our 2 cases in which the clinical results were described in the literature since 1983, tumour location (lateral ventricle, p=0.0225), surgery (gross total resection, p=0.0447), and chemotherapy (yes, p=0.0010) were revealed to be significant positive prognostic factors by the univariate analysis using the log rank test, and surgery (gross total removal, p=0.0259) and chemotherapy (yes, p=0.0016) were independent, significant positive prognostic factors in the multivariate analysis using the Cox proportional hazard regression model. Although there is a risk in doing a statistical analysis of other people's reports, these results suggest that, at present, the gross total removal of the tumour with intensive chemotherapy is the best choice of initial treatment for young children with CPC, and that radiotherapy should be considered for patients after 24 months of age and/or should be performed locally.

Notes: Abstract Laser-ionization Time-Of-Flight (TOF) mass-spectrometric studies have been carried out on the 532 nm and 1064 nm laser ablation products from a nitrogen-rich polymer. The polymer used had an elemental composition of C6.0N8.9H3.4 and consisted of C=N, C-N, and N-H chemical bonds. The TOF mass spectra observed were composed of various peaks (≤150 amu) depending on the ablation laser wavelength. The primary peaks were assigned to C+, CN+, CHnN+ 2 (n=1−3) and C2H2N+ 3 for 532 nm ablation, and C+, C+ 3, HCN+, HCCN+, CH2NH+, HNCN+, H3NCN+, and C4H4N+ 7 for 1064 nm ablation. The flight velocity distributions with peak velocities ranging from ≈8.6×103 cm/s to ≈3.8×104 cm/s were measured for these products. The distinct velocity distributions observed between small and large products indicate the presence of two origins in the fragment ejection process from the polymer for both 532 nm and 1064 nm ablation. Furthermore, we suggest an importance of the translational energy of the fragments for the product generation in the laser plume.

Notes: Abstract To investigate the effect of fructose ingestion on sorbitol and fructose 3-phosphate (F3P) in erythrocytes, we administered 50 g fructose with and without treatment with an aldose reductase inhibitor, epalrestat, to seven healthy, normal-glucose-tolerant, male volunteers aged 20–43 years. The same subjects were given 50 g glucose on another day. The sorbitol and F3P contents in their erythrocytes increased significantly, reaching peak levels at 60 min and 180 min, respectively, following fructose ingestion. On the other hand, glucose ingestion did not cause any statistically significant change in sorbitol content in their erythrocytes, although it significantly elevated their F3P content. Treatment with epalrestat had no significant effect on incremental changes in erythrocyte sorbitol and F3P content following fructose ingestion. This suggests that oral fructose may be converted directly to sorbitol and F3P in erythrocytes instead of being converted via glucose. Thus, the dietary intake of fructose may affect the concentrations of sorbitol and F3P in erythrocytes in normal men.
