    Notes: Single-electron devices are now very promising for high-accuracy and high-sensitivity electrical measurements, based on the quantification of the macroscopic charge in metallic nanostructures. The ultimate performance of these devices can only be attained by a careful filtering of the measurement circuit at very low temperature (20 mK). A new kind of wide-band high-frequency filter integrated on a copper block has been designed and studied. This original substrate provides a massive and well-thermalized electric ground plane in the vicinity of the filter. Attenuation measurements show that one has to carefully design the filter box in order to avoid the transmission of electromagnetic modes through the filter box. An improved filter showed −95 dB attenuation at 20 GHz, without any increase of the transmission at high frequency. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The magnetization process in an array of 2 μm × 2 μm × 0.04 μm permalloy particles fabricated on a 100 nm carbon membrane was investigated by means of high-resolution Lorentz microscopy and electron holography in magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to the film surface. For perpendicular fields, the magnetization reversal was found to begin with the nucleation of a vortex which gradually transformed into a closure domain configuration. At the remanent state, the flux closure was achieved with the generation of a new type of doubled domain wall. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract: We demonstrate for the first time that a periodic array of submicrometer holes (antidots) can be patterned into thin single NbSe3 crystals. We report on the study of Charge Density Wave (CDW) transport of the network of mesoscopic units between antidots. Size of the elementary unit can be as small as 0.5 μm along the chain axis and in cross-section. We observe size effects for Ohmic residual resistance and in CDW transport current-voltage characteristics in submicronic networks.

    Notes: Abstract The results of investigations of the transverse Kerr effect on an array of thin magnetic strips deposited on a silicon substrate are reported. The periodic structure of the sample gives rise to diffraction. It is observed that under certain experimental conditions the magnitude of the effect measured in diffracted beams is much greater than the maximum value for a sample with a uniform surface.

    Notes: Abstract The Bitter decoration technique is used to study the trapping of single and multiple quanta vortices by a lattice of circular microholes. By keeping a thin superconducting layer (the bottom) inside each hole we are able to visualise the trapped vortices. From this we determine, for the first time, the filling factor FF, i.e. the number of vortices captured inside a hole. In all cases the sample is cooled at a constant field before making the decoration. Two qualitatively different states of the vortex crystal are observed: (i) In case when the interhole distance is much larger than the coherence length, the filling factor averaged over many identical holes (〈(FF〉)) is a stepwise function of the magnetic flux (of the external field) through the hole, because each hole captures the same number of vortices. The density of fluxoids inside the openings is higher than in the uniform film, but much lower than it should be in the state of equilibrium. We claim that the number of trapped vortices is determined by the edge superconducting states which appear around each hole at the modified third critical fieldH c3 * 〉H c2 . BelowH c2 such states produce a surface barrier of a new type. This barrier for the vortex entrance and exit is due to the strong increase of the order parameter near the hole edge. It keeps constant the number of captured vortices during the cooling at a fixed field, (ii) An increase of the hole density or of the hole radius initiates a sharp redistribution of fluxoids: all of them drop inside holes. This first order transition leads to a localization of all vortices and consequently to a qualitative change of the transport properties (TAFF in our case). In the resulting new state the filling factor is not any more the same for neighbouring holes and its averaged value is equal to the frustration of the hole network.

    Notes: Abstract We consider the χ 0 -dependence of the density of states inside the normal metal of a superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) junction. Here χ 0 is the phase difference of two superconductors of the junction. It is shown that in the absence of electron-electron interaction the energy dependence of the density of states has a gap which decreases as χ 0 increases and closes at χ 0 = π. Both the analytical expressions for the χ 0 -dependence of the density of states and the results of numerical simulations are presented.

    Notes: Abstract In a mesoscopic metal in proximity with a superconductor, the electronic conductance is enhanced in a very energy-sensitive way. In this paper, we discuss the spectral conductance of a proximity superconductor from both the theoretical and experimental point of view. The dependence of the spectral conductance on the phase-breaking length, gap of the superconductor and interface transparency is theoretically investigated. We present experimental data on the reentrance of the normal-state conductance at very low temperature and bias voltage. A complete description of the experimental data needs taking into account heating of the reservoirs by the bias current. In addition, we show that the energy sensitivity of the proximity effect enables one to access the energy distribution of the conduction electrons inside a mesoscopic sample.

    Notes: We have studied the resistive transition of several 2-D superconducting wire networks of various coupling strengths, which we characterize in terms of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature and the ratio ξ/a of the coherence length to the array period. In the extreme strong coupling limit where the mesh size is of the order of the zero-temperature coherence length, the superconducting behavior is well described by the mean-field properties of the superconducting wave function. Extending to 2-D array, the 1-D phase slippage model explains the dissipative regime observed above the Ginzburg-Landau depairing critical current. On the other hand, when the coupling is weak, phase fluctuations below the Ginzburg-Landau transition and vortex depinning dominate the resistive behavior. An activated dissipation is observed even below the depairing critical current. Results obtained in this regime for critical temperature, magnetoresistance or critical current versus temperature, and magnetic field are shown; their periodic oscillations are discussed in terms of depinning of vortices on the array. A simple periodic pinning potential for a vortex in a wire network is calculated, and compared with the case of pinning in Josephson junction arrays. We show that this model explains qualitatively the experimental results observed for small ξ/a.

    Notes: Abstract We propose the use of a superconductor — normal metal tunnel junction as thermometer for the energy measurement on MeV ions, using a metallic bolometer. The direct measurement of electronic temperature leads to a small time constant even at very low temperature in contrast with systems where the time constant is limited by electronphonon interaction. Experiments with heat pulses obtained by LED and optical fibre confirm the calculated time constants. Sensitivity calculations using the measured data gives an energy resolution better than 1/1000 for 1MeV ions with a time constant of 50 µs.
