    Notes: Summary A single oral dose of atenolol 100 mg was given to 7 hypothyroid patients (4 F, 3 M), before and after correction of hypothyroidism, mean delay 3.5 months (2 to 6.5 months). There was no change in the elimination parameters of atenolol, but the maximal plasma atenolol concentration was increased (1.66 to 7.37 mg·l−1) as was the AUC (14.9 to 52.1 mg·l−1·h) when the hypothyroidism had been treated. Only one patient differed: he had had a supra-selective vagotomy, and had similar curves before and after treatment of the hypothyroidism, both being similar to the plasma concentration curves found in the other patients after correction of the hypothyroidism. The results suggest an increase in the bioavailability of atenolol when hypothyroidism is corrected. The findings in the patient with vagotomy suggest that the decreased bioavailability during hypothyroidism might be related to changes in intestinal pH. Further studies are needed of the impact of hypothyroidism on gastric and pancreatic or biliary function and its consequences for drug absorption, and drug pharmacokinetics.

    Notes: Summary Four patients with primary hyperaldosteronism were treated with nadroparin 4100 or 6150 antiXa IU daily for 4 days. Plasma and urine sodium and potassium, and plasma aldosterone and renin were monitored before, during and after the study. After four days of treatment, and for the following two days, plasma aldosterone was decreased (by a mean of 49% on Day 6), and urinary Na/K was increased (3.7-fold). The direction of the changes was reversed on Day 8. The study has confirmed the effect of low molecular weight heparin on aldosterone, and makes it unlikely that it is related to inhibition of angiotensin II stimulation in these patients, as renin could not be detected in their plasma.

    Notes: Single-electron devices are now very promising for high-accuracy and high-sensitivity electrical measurements, based on the quantification of the macroscopic charge in metallic nanostructures. The ultimate performance of these devices can only be attained by a careful filtering of the measurement circuit at very low temperature (20 mK). A new kind of wide-band high-frequency filter integrated on a copper block has been designed and studied. This original substrate provides a massive and well-thermalized electric ground plane in the vicinity of the filter. Attenuation measurements show that one has to carefully design the filter box in order to avoid the transmission of electromagnetic modes through the filter box. An improved filter showed −95 dB attenuation at 20 GHz, without any increase of the transmission at high frequency. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present the design and operation of a very low temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM) working at 60 mK in a dilution refrigerator. The STM features both atomic resolution and micron-sized scanning range at low temperature. We achieved an efficient thermalization of the sample while maintaining a clean surface for STM imaging. Our spectroscopic data show unprecedented energy resolution. We present current–voltage characteristics and the deduced local density of states of hybrid superconductor–normal metal systems. This work is the first experimental realization of a local spectroscopy of mesoscopic structures at very low temperature. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The serum levels of hyaluronic acid (sHA) were measured using an affinoimmunoenzymatic assay in patients with distal (n= 16) and proximal (n= 15) progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) and in 31 controls, The severity of PSS was evaluated using a standardized organ-involvement score. The mean sHA was significantly higher in the patients with PSS than in controls (mean ± SD: 80 ± 43.4μg/l vs. 42.3 ± 19.1 μg/l, P 〈 0.001). sHA was significantly higher in patients with proximal PSS than in patients with distal PSS (106.4±44.6 μg/l vs. 55.4±23.8 μg/l. P 〈 0.001). A positive correlation was found between sHA and the disease score (r= 0.67, P 〈 0.001). sHA was also correlated with lung diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide (r=0. 70. P 〈 0.001). but only in those patients who had abnormal lung function, and therefore presumably had lung PSS involvement.We suggest that sHA could be an indicator of the degree of systemic involvement in PSS. Its prognostic value and possible use in the follow up of patients with PSS remain to be clarified.

    Notes: Abstract: We present electrical transport experiments performed on submicron hybrid devices made of a ferromagnetic conductor (Co) and a superconducting (Al) electrode. The sample was patterned in order to separate the contributions of the Co conductor and of the Co-Al interface. We observed a strong influence of the Al electrode superconductivity on the resistance of the Co conductor. This effect is large only when the interface is highly transparent. We characterized the dependence of the observed resistance decrease on temperature, bias current and magnetic field. As the differential resistance of the ferromagnet exhibits a non-trivial asymmetry, we claim that the magnetic domain structure plays an important role in the electron transport properties of superconducting / ferromagnetic conductors.

    Notes: Abstract In a mesoscopic metal in proximity with a superconductor, the electronic conductance is enhanced in a very energy-sensitive way. In this paper, we discuss the spectral conductance of a proximity superconductor from both the theoretical and experimental point of view. The dependence of the spectral conductance on the phase-breaking length, gap of the superconductor and interface transparency is theoretically investigated. We present experimental data on the reentrance of the normal-state conductance at very low temperature and bias voltage. A complete description of the experimental data needs taking into account heating of the reservoirs by the bias current. In addition, we show that the energy sensitivity of the proximity effect enables one to access the energy distribution of the conduction electrons inside a mesoscopic sample.
