Notes: Abstract The catalytic substitution at silicon occurs in the reaction of toluene and diethylsilane in the presence of KNH2 loaded on alumina, the yield of benzyldiethylsilane being 85% in 40 h at 329 K. Benzene also reacted with diethylsilane in the presence of the catalyst to afford a 7.5% yield of benzyl diethylsilane in 20 h at 329 K.

Notes: Abstract The monoclonal antibody against estramustine-binding protein (EMBP) was produced by immunizing a mouse with EMBP antigen purified from rat ventral prostate. On western blotting analysis this antibody recognized the EMBP C1 component, and in an absorption test it recognized the EMBP antigen. Immunohistochemically, this antibody revealed positive staining for the ventral and dorsolateral prostate. In the epithelium of the ventral prostate, intense immunostaining was observed in the intraluminal secretory product; however, in the epithelium of the dorsolateral prostate, the staining was intense in the cytoplasm of the epithelial cells. These findings suggested differences of EMBP localization in the ventral and the dorsolateral prostate. Since the intensity of immunostaining for EMBP was decreased in the prostate of castrated rats, we considered that this antibody reflected the androgen dependency of EMBP.

Notes: Abstract  It is generally accepted that early human prostate cancers reveal higher androgen dependency than do advanced ones. In the present study, we examined whether the animal model of prostate cancer has already lost androgen dependency at the early stages of carcinogenesis. At experimental week 46, androgen deprivation was induced in rats and the incidences of atypical hyperplasia and cancer were examined in the ventral, dorsolateral prostate, coagulating glands, and seminal vesicles. Androgen deprivation significantly lowered the incidence of atypical hyperplasia in all four organs. As for the incidence of cancer, no significant differences were observed in the coagulating glands and seminal vesicles. Regarding atypical hyperplasia, androgen deprivation significantly decreased the proliferative cell nuclear antigen labeling index in the coagulating gland and seminal vesicles. The presence of cancer was also decreased in the coagulating gland but not in the seminal vesicles. With control group specimens, more intense staining of androgen receptor was observed in atypical hyperplasias than in cancers. Compared with the atypical hyperplasias, the cancers revealed low androgen dependency at the early stages of carcinogenesis. The cancers in the seminal vesicles also revealed higher androgen independency than did those in the coagulating gland.

Notes: Abstract This paper considers a synthesis approach to a decentralized autonomous system in which the functional order of the entire system is generated by cooperative interaction among its subsystems, each of which has the autonomy to control a part of the state of the system, and its application to pattern generators of animal locomotion. First, biological locomotory rhythms and their generators, swimming patterns of aquatic animals and gait patterns of quadrupeds, are reviewed briefly. Then, a design principle for autonomous coordination of many oscillators is proposed. Using these results, we synthesize a swimming pattern generator and a gait pattern generator. Finally, it is shown using computer simulations that the proposed systems generate desirable patterns.

Notes: Abstract Effects of compounds of the okadaic acid type (okadaic acid, dinophysistoxin-1, calyculin A and tautomycin) on proliferation by digestive-tract epithelial cells were investigated in mice and rats. In mice, a single oral administration of these agents caused significant enhancement of BrdU labeling indices in a dose/response manner. Exceptions showing no response were limited to the pyloric mucosa for okadaic acid, the pyloric and fundic mucosa for calyculin A and the pyloric mucosa for tautomycin. Sequential analysis of labeling indices after a single oral administration of dinophysistoxin-1 revealed two peaks of cell proliferation at 18 h and 36 h in the esophagus, ileum and colon. The labeling indices of the forestomach, fundus, pylorus and jejunum, on the other hand, continuously increased from 6 h after the administration. Elevated proliferation was also observed in the skin after 30 h or after, but no effects on the liver or kidney were evident. A single oral administration of the okadaic acid type of compounds also dose-dependently enhanced cell proliferation of the rat digestive tract. These results strongly suggest that the okadaic acid class of compounds may exert promoting potential for the gastrointestinal mucosa when administered orally.

Notes: Abstract Quadrupeds can acquire new gait patterns with respect to environmental changes. Yanagihara et al. have demonstrated this adaptability by experiments on a decerebrate cat. These experiments indicate that quadrupeds gradually adapt to their environment by repeating locomotion in a steady environment, and that the acquired gait pattern is persistently memorized after the locomotion. Our research aims at formulating a mathematical model of these cats' behavior and constructing a quadrupedal walking robot to realize such adaptive behavior. To date, we have proposed a mathematical description of adaptation at the level of gait pattern generation using neural oscillators. In this paper, we extend it to take into account limb dynamics. We study how to design the interaction of the oscillator and limb dynamics.

Notes: Abstract A sequential polydepsipeptide containing a tripeptide sequence L-alanyl-Lalanylγ-ethyl L-glutamyl and anα-hydroxy acid L-lactic acid, poly(Ala-Ala-Glu(OEt)-Lac), was synthesized to prepare the microspherical particles by the solvent evaporation process. In this case, the solvents play the most important role for the preparation of polydepsipeptide microspheres and, as an example, when 200 mg of the polydepsipeptide dissolved in 10 ml of 98/2% chloroform/dichloroacetic acid mixture was stirred at 400 rpm and 30
