Notes: The FT-Raman vibrational spectrum of a child's deciduous exfoliated tooth has been analysed and the spectral features assigned to hydroxyapatite and protein. Comparisons made with older teeth from a Romano-British burial site (∼ 2k years) and fossilised animal teeth (∼ 1 M-70 M years) indicate that the organic protein component has disappeared with interment, whereas spectroscopic features due to the inorganic phosphatic matrix are common to all samples, modern and ancient. The application of the technique to the non-destructive analysis of archaeological samples and the recording of spectra from interred samples without detriment from fluorescent material is demonstrated. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The vibration-rotation Raman spectrum of the ν2 fundamental band of P4 has been recorded photographically using a spectrograph with a reciprocal linear dispersion of 1.36 cm-1 mm-1. Analysis of the spectrum gave the following values for the vibration and rotation constants and the P—P bond length:

Notes: The pure rotational (S-branch) and vibration-rotational (Q-branch) Raman spectra of 1H2, 1H2H and 2H2 have been recorded photographically and analysed with a precision greater than that achieved in earlier investigations to produce values of the bond lengths. From a combination of these results and those obtained from the species 2H3H, 1H3H and 3H2 a mean value of the bond length in the equilibrium configuration of re = 74.151±0.001 pm has been obtained.

Notes: The pure rotation Raman spectrum of 17O18O has been recorded photographically using laser excitation and a spectrograph with a reciprocal linear dispersion of 1.4 cm-1 mm-1 at 488.0 nm. The following B0, D0 and r0 values were obtained; B0=1.31546±0.00002 cm-1, 106D0=3.50±0.05 cm-1 and r0=121.072±0.002 pm.

Notes: Broadening coefficients, σp, have been determined for the pure rotational Raman lines of nitrogen and oxygen, perturbed by hydrogen, helium and methane, and of hydrogen broadened by helium, argon, nitrogen and carbon monoxide, over the pressure range 2-100 bar with a host gas partial pressure of 1 bar. The results are summarized below:The broadening coefficients are discussed in relation to the dipole, quadrupole and octopole moments and the polarizabilities of the perturbing species.

Notes: The bands at 2485 and 940 cm-1 observed in the Raman spectra of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole represent the hydrogen-bonded ν(SH) stretching and δ(C-SH) in-plane bending modes, respectively. A quantitative study of the hydrogen bonding was carried out using intensity measurements of the bands assigned to the hydrogen-bonded and the free δ(C-SH) in-plane deformations at 940 and 919 cm-1, respectively, as a function of temperature. The Fourier transform (FT) Raman spectra were recorded over the temperature range 303-403 K using an environmental chamber fitted into the FT Raman sample compartment. The equilibrium constants between the free and the hydrogen-bonded molecules were determined over this temperature range and the average enthalpy for hydrogen-bond formation was obtained (ΔH° = -3.35 ± 0.2 kJ mol-1).

Notes: The construction of a remote Raman microscope system with a variable microscope-to-spectrometer distance of up to 3 m is described. Oxidative surface corrosion products on zirconium alloy and stainless-steel nuclear fuel claddings for pressurized water and advanced gas cooled reactor systems produced under various conditions were studied and the potential of the technique for in situ analysis is discussed. Under the conditions studied experimentally, the major corrosion products are found to be α-ZrO2 and α-Fe2O3 for the zirconium alloy and stainless-steel claddings, respectively.

Notes: The vibration-rotation Raman spectra of the oxygen species 18O2, 17O18O, 17O2 and 16O2 have been recorded and analysed; the spectra of the 17O18O and 17O2 species are reported for the first time. The B0 and α values from these analyses were used to calculate values for the equilibrium-state rotational constants, Be, and hence the bond lengths, re. The following values were obtained:

Notes: The Fourier-transform (FT) Raman spectra of genuine samples of scrimshaw are reported and compared with those of fake scrimshaw, ivory and human milk tooth. The major spectral features in all systems examined were assigned. The application of the FT-Raman technique to the non-destructive diagnostic identification of scrimshaw and simulated scrimshaw artefacts is demonstrated.

Notes: Fourier transform (FT) Raman spectra of the cell walls of three species of fungi are reported for the first time, namely (i) Agaricus bisporus, a fruiting bud, (ii) Mortierella genus and (iii) Mucor genus. Some molecular assignments are proposed for the major vibrational features and attributed to chitin, N-acetylglucosamine and (R)-glucan. Preliminary studies indicate that it is possible to use FT-Raman spectroscopy to discriminate between different mixed species in culture media.
