Notes: We report on optically detected magnetic resonance experiments conducted at high pressures on an organic mixed crystal system. Changes in triplet state zero-field splittings (ZFS) of the guest molecule monitored as a function of host crystal compression reveal the existence of three compressional regimes. Up to 7 kbar most contraction is intermolecular with little change in intramolecular distances. From 7 to 25 kbar shrinkage of the lattice is proportional to the decrease in molecular volume. Above 25 kbar this linearity no longer holds, and the ZFS suggests a distortion in molecular geometry.

Notes: The infinite dimensional highest weight representations of Uqosp(1|2) for the deformation parameter q being a root of unity are investigated. As in the cases of q-deformed nongraded Lie algebras, we find that every irreducible representation is isomorphic to the tensor product of a highest weight representation of sl2(R) and a finite dimensional one of Uqosp(1|2). The structure is investigated in detail. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Oyster mushrooms, Pleurotus sajor-caju, were grown on chopped corn stover substrate with increasing amounts of cracked corn supplementation and were harvested at immature and mature stages of growth. Descriptive terms for mushroom color, texture, and flavor were generated and used to determine the impact of cracked corn supplementation on the sensory attributes of fresh and stored (5C for 48h) immature mushrooms and of fresh mature oyster mushrooms. Results indicated that supplementation with cracked corn significantly (P 〈 0.05) affected the texture attributes, i.e., tough, rubbery, and fibrous of the oyster mushroom. When factor analysis (FA) was applied to the descriptor data, three factors were identified in the immature fresh and immature stored oyster mushrooms data which explained 86 and 82%, respectively, of the variation. FA of data from the mature oyster mushrooms identified 3 factors which explained 89% of the data variation.

Notes: Abstract High levels of arginase have been detected in gastric adenocarcinoma. To examine the hypothesis that this is due to macrophage infiltration into the tumour, we localized the cellular distribution of arginase by immunohistochemical staining. We examined gastric adenocarcinomas and their corresponding normal tissues (n=45), leiomyomas (n=2), leiomyosarcomas (n=3), human gastric adenocarcinoma cell lines (n=3), and benign gastric ulcers (n=4) by the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex technique. Macrophages with strong arginase immunoreactivity were observed infiltrating both gastric normal and cancer tissues. No arginase immunoreactivity was observed in normal mucosal gland, muscular and serosal tissues or benign gastric ulcers. The immunoreactivity of arginase was positive but heterogeneous in most specimens of gastric adenocarcinoma (62.2%) and was absent from gastric intestinal metaplasia, leiomyomas and leiomyosarcomas. Among the 28 neoplasms with arginase immunoreactivity, scattered immunoreactivity was also noted in adjacent dysplastic glands in 12 (42.8%) specimens. Arginase immunoreactivity was observed in all three gastric cancer cell lines. Arginase is present in the cytoplasm but not in the nucleus. These data suggest that the high arginase levels in adenocarcinoma cancer tissues originate largely from cancer cells.

Notes: Summary Goal. To assess the morbidity and mortality of meningioma surgery in patients over age 65 and compare our results with matched controls and with the present literature on meningioma surgery in the elderly. Methods. An evaluation of 114 patients undergoing meningioma resection divided into two groups: 57 patients aged 65–87, and a control group of 57 patients aged 25–64 matched by ASA status and tumor site. Operative complications, 30-day mortality, and pre- and postoperative neurologic status were assessed with follow up one to three months. Results. Complication rates in the two groups were similar and were low. Four out of fifty-seven elderly patients (7.0%) had a surgical complication compared with five younger patients (8.8%) Excluding asymptomatic DVT detected by screening, three elderly patients had medical complications (5.2%) compared with two controls (3.5%).  The vast majority of patients—93% of the elderly group and 89.4% in the controls—experienced either improvement or no change in neurologic status at followup one to three months after surgery.  There was one death among elderly patients within thirty days for a mortality rate of 1.8% compared with no mortality in the case control group. The elderly patient who died was an 80-year old man who died of pneumonia in a rehabilitation hospital three weeks after surgery.  Our study group of 57 patients was compared by tumor site and preoperative general health status to other series in the literature. In a review from the literature of 417 patients over age 65 who underwent meningioma surgery, the average 30-day mortality was 16%. The complication rate averaged 39%. Discussion. Our lower morbidity and mortality rates after meningioma surgery in the elderly may be a result of patient selection, surgical technique, or excellent pre- and post-operative care by the resident staff, anesthesiologists, and nurses. It suggests, however, that elderly patients can have meningioma surgery safely.

Notes: Abstract An energy absorbing ‘stiff’ test facility has been developed for obtaining stable and controlled diagonal tension failure in shear-critical reinforced concrete beams. The test facility allows the monitoring of the complete curve of load versus mid-span deflection (including the post-peak region) of the shear-critical beams. For stiffening the existing test facility and to provide the energy absorption capability, two kinds of test set-up have been developed: the parallel steel beam test set-up and the cross steel beam test set-up. The test set-up with a cross steel beam as the stiffening element is much stiffer than the parallel steel beam test set-up and hence more stable for obtaining a controlled and stable failure even for the higher strengh concrete beams. The results indicate the post-peak branch of the load versus mid-span deflection of the shear-critical high strength concrete beams is relatively steeper than that of normal strength concrete beams.

Notes: Abstract We report a child with clinical and radiological manifestations characteristic of both V'aradi syndrome (oral-facial-digital syndrome type VI) and Thurston syndrome (oral-facial-digital syndrome type V). The findings have not been reported previously, and we believe that it represents a new variant.
