Notes: The multiple diffraction of X-rays and neutrons is discussed on the basis of the kinematical theory; a program for the simulation of ψ scanning and λ scanning is developed, where the influence of the wavelength width of incident beams on the Ewald construction is properly taken into account. The effect of higher-order diffraction (n-beam interaction, n 〉 3) is treated as the sum of those of (n-2) pairs of relevant double diffractions (three-beam interactions). Applications are made for some examples for which experimental data are available; it is shown that the results are in very good agreement with experiment. This suggests that the kinematical approach is appropriate. The simulation is useful in planning ψ-scanning experiments for precise structure determination and for examining experimental data.

Notes: Abstract Because of the therapeutic potential of oxacalcitriol (OCT, 22-oxa-dihydroxyvitamin D3), in vivo studies were conducted in adult and neonatal rats to identify the nuclear receptor sites of action in different tissues of the skin. Results were compared with those for 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D3) and oestradiol from previous studies. Autoradiograms were prepared from the dorsal skin of adult rats and the skin of the leg and head regions of neonatal rats 1 or 2 h after the injection of3H-OCT. Specific nuclear concentrations of radioactivity, eliminated by competition with unlabelled OCT or 1,25(OH)2D3, were found in cells of the epidermis, outer hair sheath, hair bulb and sebaceous glands, but were absent or low in most fibroblasts of the dermis and hypodermis. The strongest nuclear binding of OCT was conspicuous in outer hair sheaths, where it was 1.5 to 3.2 times higher than in keratinocytes of the epidermis. The distribution of nuclear receptors for OCT was similar to that for 1,25(OH)2D3 but in part dissimilar to that for oestradiol. Oestradiol binding was found in the epidermis and hair sheaths, and also predominantly in fibroblasts of the dermis and hair dermal papillae. The results suggest genomic regulatory effects of OCT, similar to the effects of vitamin D, on proliferation, differentiation and activity of keratinocytes, growth and maintenance of hair, and proliferation and secretion of sebaceous glands. This may be utilized therapeutically, since OCT has a lower calcaemic effect than 1,25(OH)2D3.

Notes: Abstract 22-Oxacalcitriol the analog with low calcemic effect and the original hormone 1,25(OH)2 vitamin D3 were localized by autoradiography in mouse stomach at different time intervals after intravenous injection. Both compunds showed a distinct nuclear concentration and retention in neck mucous cells of gastric and pyloric glands, and in dispersed endocrine cells in the antrum region. When the nuclear binding of radioactively labelled compound was compared between gastric neck cells and duodenal absorptive cells, binding was low but sustained in neck cells. Peak uptake after the injection was between 8 and 12 h in neck cells, but between 15 min and 30 min in duodenal villous epithelium. In the duodenum, weak nuclear labelling appeared at 8 h and was undetectable at 12 h under the conditions of the experiment. Nuclear labelling of neck cells remained detectable at 12 h and even after 24 h, similarly for both OCT and 1,25(OH)2 vitamin D3. These results suggest that the stomach is an important target tissue for vitamin D and its analog OCT. Regulation of neck cell functions is suggested, such as proliferation and differentiation of surface epithelium and gastric gland epithelium, and neck cell secretion of acidic mucus. Regulation is also indicated of G-cell gastrin secretion associated with gastrin paracrine effects on parietal cell HCl and intrinsic factor secretion, chief cell pepsinogen secretion, neck cell proliferation, as well as endocrine effects on systemic calcium homeostasis.

Notes: Summary The case of a 55-year-old female with chondroblastoma arising from the left temporal bone is presented. Although 10 cases of temporal chondroblastoma have been reported, this is the first in which plain radiography, pluridirectional tomography, computed tomography (CT) and angiography were performed. We discuss the clinical and radiological aspects of this rare tumor.

Notes: Abstract. Nipple discharge disorders is a field in which there has been both increasing awareness on the part of patients and advances in management. Today secretion from nipples can be classified according to its color, cellularity and biology. To be significant a discharge should be true, spontaneous, persistent and non-lactational. Moreover there are methods to differentiate patients who require surgical intervention from those who do not. Surgically significant nipple discharges are watery, serous (yellow), serosanguineous and bloody. Cytology smears of discharge material have helped to classify the cellular material, providing information about normality, atypia and malignancy and also about papillary formation of the exfoliated cells. Tests such as Hemoccult help to discover occult blood in the secreted fluid. Modern immunological tests can be performed on cytology smears where occurrence of high levels of carcinoembryonic antigen could indicate a latent malignancy. Galactography investigation is today the state-of-the-art approach to investigate patients with nipple discharge disorders and this examination can demonstrate the size, location and extent of an intraductal abnormality. Modern high-resolution ultrasound techniques are helpful in visualizing intraductal disorders and are becoming a good complementary approach if not an alternative to traditional radiology techniques. Recently even MR galactography has been shown to be of diagnostic value, but not as informative as regular galactography. The most sophisticated investigation method, which can also be used therapeutically, is fiber-ductoscopy of the concerned duct in a breast. This technique, although expensive and in its infancy, is a fascinating and promising approach for inspecting the intraductal lumina. In this article the background, current investigation methods and possibilities of the technique are described, as well as the most sophisticated ways to deal with nipple discharge disorders in human breasts.

Notes: Abstract Spectroscopic observations were performed of the early-type contact binary AW Lac with an image-intensified coude spectrograph of 1.9-m telescope at the Okayama Astrophysical Observatory. A total of twenty-two spectra covering blue region with a dispersion of 16 Amm-1 have been secured on Kodak IIa-O baked plates. In every spectra sharp interstellar CaII H,K lines are clearly seen. The spectral type of AW Lac has been estimated as early B, which substantially confirms the one adopted in the photometric analysis by Jiang et al. (1983) and is diffrent from A0 listed in General Catalogue of Variable Stars (Kholopov et al. 1985). Contrary to the suggestion by the photometric solution of Jiang et al., no definite secondary lines could be separated, though some indications of light contamination due to the secondary component are surely observed. This would imply that the light ratio of the components should be somewhat smaller than that derived by photometric analysis. No emission features appeared either. The measurement of radial velocities of the primary component for the orbital elements was made for twenty spectra by a conventional method. It was difficult to measure the radial velocities because the lines are quite broadened and deformed. Hence the measured values for the radial velocities should be regarded as rather preliminary. The derived spectroscopic elements, combined with the photometric data, give the absolute dimensions of the system for each assumed mass ratio q. For q = 1, being the adopted photometric solution by Jiang et al., we obtain too small value for the primary's mass, comparing with its spectral type. For the mass ratio as small as q = 0.6, we can obtain a reasonable value for the mass of the primary. However, in order to get more definite conclusion the cross-correlation method would be more appropriate for the spectroscopic analysis of this system.
