    Notes: The design and performance of a radiative substrate heater that operates under vacuum in a highly oxidizing environment is described. Using this heater, substrate temperatures exceeding 1050 °C are readily achieved. These are the highest temperatures reported for a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) heater that operates in an oxidizing ambient. This heater was designed for the growth of oxide thin films by PLD, but the design concept is suitable for other vacuum deposition methods requiring high substrate temperatures to be achieved in an oxidizing environment. In addition to the high substrate temperatures achievable, the design described enables easy switching between on-axis PLD and off-axis PLD (allowing both sides of the wafer to be coated in the same growth) and allows the target-to-substrate distance to be easily adjusted from outside the chamber. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract: Nitric oxide may regulate cellular respiration by competition with oxygen at mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase. Using an astrocyte-derived cell line, we have compared the mechanism of action of the nitric oxide-generating compound Roussin's black salt with that of sodium nitroprusside on cellular oxygen consumption. Intense light exposure induced the release of large quantities of nitric oxide from both of the donor compounds. However, in room light only Roussin's black salt generated low levels of the radical. Simultaneous measurement of oxygen consumption and of nitric oxide production demonstrated that sodium nitroprusside only had inhibitory actions when exposed to intense light (nitric oxide release), whereas Roussin's black salt had inhibitory actions in room light. Extracellular haemoglobin did not prevent the inhibition of respiration rate induced by Roussin's black salt even though stimulation of nitric oxide release on light exposure was markedly reduced. Preincubation of cells with Roussin's black salt and subsequent measurement of levels of light-liberated nitric oxide demonstrated that the compound was rapidly internalised. The uptake of sodium nitroprusside was minimal. These data suggest that, in contrast to sodium nitroprusside, the cellular internalisation of Roussin's black salt allows site-directed nitric oxide release and very effective inhibition of cellular respiration.

    Notes: Abstract Background: The natural course of subacute ventricular free wall rupture (FWR) as a complication of acute myocardial infarction (MI) is usually lethal. The aim of this study was to investigate the curability of this entity and to report on five patients successfully treated by rapid diagnosis, hemodynamic stabilization, and emergency surgical repair. Methods: Five patients with subacute FWR of the left ventricle after previous MI were operated on. Infarctectomy with subsequent closure of the ruptured area was carried out in two patients with anterolateral infarction. Three other patients (two with posterior and one with lateral infarction) were treated by direct closure and the application of a patch. Furthermore, in two patients, concomitant myocardial revascularization was performed. Results: All patients survived the procedure and were alive and well at long-term follow-up (mean 36.4 months). None of the patients suffered recurrent MI. Conclusions: Our experience and a review of the literature shows that prompt diagnosis and emergency surgical intervention may save the patient. Anterior rupture (with a moderate sized infarcted area) is best treated by infarctectomy and subsequent closure of the ventriculotomy with sutures buttressed with felt, whereas posterior rupture may be treated by direct closure and the application of an epicardial patch. Considering our results, we cannot conclude whether additional coronary artery bypass grafting is beneficial or not. Our suggestion is to perform additional myocardial revascularization only if indicated.

    Notes: Electron drift velocities in mixtures of SiF4 and Ar have been measured using a pulsed-Townsend type drift tube. A set of vibrational excitation cross sections of electron scattering in SiF4 has been subsequently determined by the swarm analyses of measured transport data in highly dilute SiF4−Ar mixtures. The derived cross sections are consistent with the electron transport properties over an order of magnitude in SiF4 concentration in gas mixtures, thus providing evidence that the main features of their near threshold behavior, and of their absolute magnitude have been captured. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The quality of soft-fruited (‘Shawnee’) and firm-fruited (‘Navaho’) blackberry cultivars held under simulated retail conditions was determined. Leakage and decay increased during storage and exceeded 20% in 'Shawnee’ fruit after 14 days at 2C or 7 days at 5C, while ‘Navaho’ held under similar conditions was still marketable (〈10% decay). Transferring fruit to 20C for 2 days after low temperature storage intervals was detrimental to fruit quality, resulting in increased weight loss, leakage, decay and softening in both cultivars. After retail warming, ‘Shawnee’ fruit lost 25% of marketable fruit while‘Navaho’ had a 10% loss. Soluble solids concentration did not change significantly during storage, but titratable acidity declined 40–50%. Anthocyanin content increased from 20–100% depending on cultivar, storage temperature and storage intervals. The sugar composition of blackberries before storage was about 10, 260 and 260 mg/g dry weight, glucose, and fructose, respectively. Sucrose and glucose decreased and fructose increased slightly during storage. Warming fruit after low temperature storage did not accelerate loss of total sugars. If held constantly at 2C, ‘Navaho’ could be held 21 days.
