Notes: The construction of genetic maps is an expensive and time-consuming process. The breeder is therefore interested in using maps developed from other mapping populations but this is only possible if the genetic structure is similar for the chromosomal regions of interest. In this paper, maps of three populations of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) with common polymorphic marker loci are compared. Maps were constructed with MAPMAKER 3.0 and JOINMAP 2.0. Both mapping programs gave, in general, the same order for common markers. However, the number of common markers was too low to construct a combined map for all chromosomes. For one population, in contrast to the other two, the map constructed with MAPMAKER 3.0 was much longer than that constructed with JOINMAP 2.0.For two of these populations yield traits were also available from different environments. For quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis of the yield data, the packages MAPMAKER/QTL 1.1 and PLABQTL were used. No QTL common for the two populations could be detected. The program and the version used strongly influenced the estimated positions of QTLs. There was also a strong interaction with environments.

There is abundant evidence that a reduction in mitochondrial respiration of plants occurs when atmospheric CO2 (Ca) is increased. Recent reviews suggest that doubling the present Ca will reduce the respiration rate [per unit dry weight (DW)] by 15 to 18%. The effect has two components: an immediate, reversible effect observed in leaves, stems, and roots of plants as well as soil microbes, and an irreversible effect which occurs as a consequence of growth in elevated Ca and appears to be specific to C3 species. The direct effect has been correlated with inhibition of certain respiratory enzymes, namely cytochrome-c-oxidase and succinate dehydrogenase, and the indirect or acclimation effect may be related to changes in tissue composition. Although no satisfactory mechanisms to explain these effects have been demonstrated, plausible mechanisms have been proposed and await experimental testing. These are carbamylation of proteins and direct inhibition of enzymes of respiration. A reduction of foliar respiration of 15% by doubling present ambient Ca would represent 3 Gt of carbon per annum in the global carbon budget.

Notes: Summary Based on the pathogenetic knowledge of diverticular disease the importance of incomplete diverticula is elucidated. The lymphoepithelial tissue structure of incomplete diverticula indicates the tendency for chronic inflammatory disease, which leads to dissecting phlegmons of the wall of large bowels. Perforation of the colon may occur. The pathogenetic importance of incomplete diverticula is seen in the pacemakerfunction for complications of diverticulitis. The radiological proof by barium enema shows indirect and direct signs of incomplete diverticula. This is an important feature in diagnosis and prognosis. Conservative therapy is usually of little value because of the chronic advance of this disease. Only early and extensive resection of large bowel proves compatible success. In view of the complication the surgical risk — 2,2% — is accountable.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Purpose: The experience with the endoluminal treatment of abdominal, infrarenal aortic aneurysms with two different stent devices is reported. Material and methods: Some 33 males and one female, between 52 and 81 years of age were treated for infrarenal aortic aneurysm. A Vanguard stent was used in 23 patients (19 bifurcated, four tube) and a Talent stent in 11 (seven bifurcated, four tube). The two different stent designs were selected depending on the diameter of the aneurysmal neck and the iliac arteries. All procedures were performed under general anaesthesia in the angiographic suite. Results: The primary technical success rate was 85.3%; the secondary success rate was 91.1%. Primary and secondary clinical success were 61.7 and 79.4% respectively. During a follow-up of 22 months, we saw seven late complications, which required an open operation three times. Conclusion: With both stent systems, the same results as with open repair could not be reached. At present, the pros and cons for both systems seem to be balanced. Both are to be improved.

Notes: The vascular anatomy in the acetabular region involves a certain risk of arterial and venous injuries complicating orthopaedic surgery. These complications have been grouped into four categories: lacerations, thrombosis, pseudoaneurysms and arteriovenous fistula. In a period of 5 years, three injuries of the external iliac artery and four lesions of the femoral artery associated with total hip arthroplasty were treated surgically at the Department of Vascular Surgery of the University Hospital in Graz. In one case a concomitant lesion of the pelvic vein was observed. The incidence of iatrogenic vascular injuries in total hip surgery is 0.3%. Combined injury of the external iliac artery and vein led to a life-threatening bleeding complication. The vascular lesion became manifest as acute ischaemia of the lower extremity or as an acute haemorrhage 30 min to 2 h after primary surgery. The late complication of a false aneurysm of the femoral artery occurred in one patient 3 weeks after total hip replacement. Reconstruction of the vascular lesions was performed by direct suture, except that two arterial lesions required the use of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) vascular grafts. Vessels in the pelvic region are at high risk if screw fixation acetabular components are used. Perforation of the iliac artery by protruded methylmethacrylate polymer components of cement has been documented. The obturator vessels are in a vulnerable position if the acetabular floor has been broached by operative instruments or eroded by loosening of the prosthesis facilitated by osteoporosis, steroids or sepsis. Femoral vessels are endangered by Hohmann retractors that are not placed directly on bone. Though vascular injury during hip operations is rare, recognition of such complications is important as safe and satisfactory treatment can be achieved. Rapid identification and immediate surgical repair of these lacerations are essential for their management.
