Notes: Summary Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was treated in a dipolar-aprotic solvent like N,N-dimethylacetamide, or dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) with p-toluenesulfonic acid yielding a high reactive gel-suspension of the polymer. This mixture allows a direct esterification of free hydroxyl groups of CMC as exemplified by acylation with carbonic acid chlorides, or anhydrides, and with isocyanates as well as by sulphation, phosphating and silylation. The products characterized by elemental analysis and FTIR spectroscopy possess a high degree of functionalization.

Notes: Abstract The Postmasburg Mn/Fe-ores occur exclusively in dolomitic Precambrian sinkhole structures with siliceous breccias and shales as hostrocks. The main manganese minerals are braunite and bixbyite, apart from secondary alteration products of the psilomelane-manganomelane family. Various generations of ore minerals could be identified. The ore mineralization is subdivided into three different genetic types. They are classified either as pure karst deposits or as combined formations of karst origin and shallow marine sedimentation due to the transgression of the Banded Iron Formation (BIF) sea. Post-sedimentary metamorphism is identified as very low grade. The development of the different ore types is illustrated schematically.

Notes: The uniform structure of cellulose, combined with its hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, chirality, and structure-forming capacity, as well as its broad synthetic potential, make the design of cellulose-based advanced materials a challenge for polysac-charide research. The synthesis of new cellulose products with regiocontrolled pattern of functionalization and of well defined supramolecular nanoscale architectures is a highlight in recent cellulose chemistry. The present feature will discuss regioselective functionalization of cellulose and cellulose derivatives with respect to reactivity of the polymer depending on molecular and supramolecular structure. Experimental examples of functionalization via ester intermediates of controlled stability as well as via protecting or activating ether groups are described and the efficiency of the reaction routes and procedures is evaluated. Moreover, problems and progress in techniques of product analysis and structure-property relationships as well as potential applications of regioselectively functionalized cellulosics are presented together with a discussion of possible future developments in cellulose chemistry.
