Notes: Abstract The catalytic substitution at silicon occurs in the reaction of toluene and diethylsilane in the presence of KNH2 loaded on alumina, the yield of benzyldiethylsilane being 85% in 40 h at 329 K. Benzene also reacted with diethylsilane in the presence of the catalyst to afford a 7.5% yield of benzyl diethylsilane in 20 h at 329 K.

Notes: Abstract. We analyzed the mycolic acid composition of trehalose 6,6′-dimycolate (TDM) obtained from Mycobacterium, using thin layer chromatography, gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Utilizing TDM, whose structure was confirmed, granuloma formation in mice was investigated. All TDM used exhibited considerable granuloma formation activity in the lung and spleen. In particular, TDM from M. bovis showed the greatest activity and toxicity among mycobacterial TDM. We therefore discussed the relationship between the chemical structure and granuloma-forming activity of TDM, especially in relation to the structure of mycolic acid in TDM.

Notes: Abstract Intracavity second-harmonic generation of continuous-wave chemical oxygen-iodine laser emission has been studied. A chemical oxygen-iodine laser with a maximum fundamental-wave output power of about 10 W in a concentric cavity was used. Experiments were performed for three types of optical cavities using an 1 cm LBO crystal. Second-harmonic output of 12.4 W, 6.2 W, and 5.2 W, effective extraction efficiencies of 155.0% 65.9%. and 55.3%, and single-pass conversion efficiencies of 0.615%, 0.685%, and 0.655% were obtained for the respective cavities. A comparison of these results of coupling by frequency doubling with the results of fundamental-wave output coupling of this system is also presented.
