Notes: The lattice parameter of undoped and boron doped polycrystalline diamond films has been measured up to 8×1020 B cm−3. It varies slightly according to the three crystallographic directions [111], [220], and [311] investigated here. The cell parameters for the undoped films are within the published values for synthetic crystal and thin films. For the boron doped films, the cell parameter has a high expansion coefficient versus boron incorporation, with a mean value of Δa/a=3×10−24 [B], ([B] in cm−3), and a variation law in the [220] direction in striking agreement with a Russian work. The simplest Vegard model predicts a smaller variation, while both the deformation potential (but with a high deformation potential on the boron impurity band of +19.5 eV) and a defect model might explain the experimental results. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We study the (004) diffraction peaks of (001) homoepitaxial diamond films (deposited by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition) vs their boron content from 2×1017 to 8×1020 cm−3. The lattice parameter calculated for the relaxed films slightly increases according to the linear Vegard's law up to 2.7×1020 [B] cm−3, then more rapidly with another linear law. We ascribed this second law to an additional electronic contribution from the hole on the boron impurity band with a positive deformation potential around 16 eV. There is overall agreement between the deduced in-plane stresses and the Raman peak positions. The full width at half maximum of the diffraction peak is dominated by the concentration of residual defects which are lower in the film than in the substrate up to 1020 [B] cm−3. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract  Maize streak virus (MSV) disease may cause significant grain yield reductions in maize in Africa. Réunion island maize germplasm is a proven source of strong resistance. Its genetic control was investigated using 123 RFLP markers in an F2 population of D211 (resistant) × B73 (susceptible). This population of 165 F2:3 families was carefully evaluated in Harare (Zimbabwe) and in Réunion. Artificial infestation was done with viruliferous leafhoppers. Each plant was rated weekly six times after infestation on a 1–9 scale previously adjusted by image analysis. QTL analyses were conducted for each scoring date, and for the areas under the disease, incidence and severity progress curves. The composite interval mapping method used allowed the estimation of the additive and dominance effects and QTL × environment interactions. Heritabilities ranged from 73% to 98%, increasing with time after infestation. Resistance to streak virus in D211 was provided by one region on chromosome 1, with a major effect, and four other regions on chromosomes 2, 3 (two regions) and 10, with moderate or minor effects. Overall, they explained 48–62% of the phenotypic variation for the different variables. On chromosome 3, one of the two regions seemed to be more involved in early resistance, whereas the second was detected at the latest scoring date. Other QTLs were found to be stable over time and across environments. Mild QTL × environment interactions were detected. Global gene action appeared to be partially dominant, in favor of resistance, except at the earliest scoring dates, where it was additive. From this population, 32 families were chosen, representing the whole range of susceptibility to MSV. They were tested in Réunion against three MSV clones, along with a co-inoculation of two of them. Virulence differences between clones were significant. There were genotype × clone interactions, and these were more marked for disease incidence than for severity. Although these interactions were not significant for the mean disease scores, it is suggested that breeders should select for completely resistant genotypes.

Notes: This paper reviews the transmission and reflection texture techniques in order to develop the correction formulae in each of these methods for application to fluorescent thin-film analysis. The method is applied to iron samples deposited on glass substrates in order to prove the efficiency of these corrections in the case of the Schulz reflection geometry. The columnar growth of these films is shown to be dependent on the incident flux inclination.

Notes: Highly incomplete pole figures of a magnetic-field-aligned melt-textured superconducting sample of the Y–Ba–Cu–O system were measured by neutron diffraction. The orientation distribution of the main superconducting 123 and a minor 211 phase have been derived with the WIMV algorithm. The 123 phase is strongly textured with a (001) maximum around 22 times that of a random distribution (m.r.d.) and a texture index of 30. There are two orientation components present that have no apparent relationship with the applied magnetic field. The texture of the 211 phase is weak, with a maximum of 1.7 m.r.d. The textures of the two phases appear to be correlated.

Notes: Abstract A patient with a stage II seminoma of the testis was treated with a routine orchidectomy and irradiation. One and a half years later enlarged mediastinal lymph nodes were noted. Additional staging showed no other abnormalities and a mediastinoscopy was performed. The initial histologic examination confirmed the clinically suspected diagnosis of sarcoidosis. However, additional immunohistochemical analysis unexpectedly demonstrated that there was also a microscopic relapse of the testis tumor. The literature concerning the co-incidence of non-caseating granulomas and testis tumors is reviewed. It is not clear, whether the granulomas indicate the presence of genuine idiopathic sarcoidosis or whether they reflect a sarcoid-like reaction against tumor antigens. The immunopathogenesis of sarcoid formation and its possible biologic significance in obtaining a spontaneous tumor remission is discussed.

Notes: Abstract  The streak disease has a major effect on maize in sub-Saharan Africa. Various genetic factors for resistance to the virus have been identified and mapped in several populations; these factors derive from different sources of resistance. We have focused on the Réunion island source and have recently identified several factors in the D211 line. A second very resistant line, CIRAD390, was crossed to the same susceptible parent, B73. The linkage map comprised 124 RFLP markers, of which 79 were common with the D211×B73 map. A row-column design was used to evaluate the resistance to maize streak virus (MSV) of 191 F2:3 families under artificial infestation at two locations: Harare (Zimbabwe) and in Réunion island. Weekly ratings of resistance were taken and disease incidence and severity calculated. QTL analyses were conducted for each scoring date and for the integration over time of the disease scores, of incidence, and of severity. Heritability estimates (71–98%) were as high as for the D211×B73 population. Eight QTLs were detected on chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 5 (two QTLs), 6, 8, and 10. The chr1-QTL explained the highest proportion of phenotypic variation, about 45%. The QTLs on chromosomes 1, 2, and 10 were located in the same chromosomal bin as QTLs for MSV resistance in the D211×B73 population. In a simultaneous fit, QTLs explained together 43–67% of the phenotypic variation. The QTLs on chromosomes 3, 5, and 6 appeared to be specific for one or the other component of the resistance. For the chr3-QTL, resistance was contributed by the susceptible parent. There were significant QTL × environment interactions for some of the variables studied, but QTLs were stable in the two environments. They also appeared to be stable over time. Global gene action ranged from partial dominance to overdominance, except for disease severity. Some additional putative QTLs were also detected. The major QTL on chromosome 1 seemed to be common to the other sources of resistance, namely Tzi4, a tolerant line from IITA, and CML202 from CIMMYT. However, the distribution of the other QTLs within the genome revealed differences in Réunion germplasm and across these other resistance sources. This diversity is of great importance when considering the durability of the resistance.

Notes: Abstract Resistance to maize streak virus (MSV) is an essential trait of improved maize varieties in sub-Saharan Africa. We mapped quantitative trait loci (QTL) for resistance to MSV in a population of 196 F2:3 lines derived from a cross between the maize inbred lines CML202 (resistant) from CIMMYT-Zimbabwe and Lo951 (susceptible) from Italy. Field tests were planted at two locations in Zimbabwe, inoculated with viruliferous leaf hoppers (Cicadulina mbila), and scored twice (21 and 83 days after infesting, DAI) on a 1–5 scale. The mean final streak intensity (score 2) of the parent lines was 2.2 (CML202) and 4.8 (Lo951). Genotype × location interaction was large for score 1 but negligible for score 2. Consequently, the heritability was higher for score 2 (0.93) than for score 1 (0.62). By composite interval mapping across locations, using a linkage map with 110 RFLP loci, four significant (LOD ≥3.0) QTL were identified for score 1 on chromosomes (C) 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively. All four were contributed by CML202. For score 2, only the QTL on C 1 was significant (LOD =37), explaining 59% of the phenotypic and 64% of the genotypic variance. The QTL's partially dominant gene action was consistent with the nearly intermediate resistance of the F1 generation (relative heterosis for resistance 12%). The presence of one major QTL is consistent with the bimodal frequency distribution of the mapping population showing a clear 3:1 segregation. This gene seems to be allelic or identical to Msv1, a major resistance gene which was previously identified in the same genomic region in Tzi4, an inbred line from IITA. Inbred CML202 had lower final disease ratings than Tzi4. The greater resistance of CML202 may be due to allelic differences at the msv1 locus or due to the minor QTL on C 2, 3, and 4 which were not detected in Tzi4. z y Trigo (International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center); IITA, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture; IRAT, Institute de Recherches Agronomiques Tropicales et des Cultures Vivrières; KARI, Kenya Agricultural Research Institute; MSV, maize streak virus; QTL, quantitative trait locus/loci
