    Notes: Abstract The effects of the dopamin D1 antagonist SCH23390 and the D2 antagonist sulpiride on the rewarding effects of δ opioid receptor agonists were examined in mice. Both [d-Pen2, Pen5]enkephalin (DPDPE, 1–15 nmol, ICV), a selective δ1 opioid receptor agonist, and [d-Ala2]deltorphin II (DELT, 0.5–5 nmol, ICV), a selective δ2 opioid receptor agonist, produced a dose-dependent place preference in mice. The DPDPE (15 nmol, ICV)-induced place preference was abolished by BNTX (0.5 mg/kg, SC), a δ1 opioid receptor antagonist, but not by NTB (0.5 mg/kg, SC), a δ2 opioid receptor antagonist. In contrast, the DELT (5 nmol, ICV)-induced place preference was antagonized by NTB, but not BNTX. Pretreatment with SCH23390 (3 µg/kg, SC) abolished the DPDPE-induced place preference, but not affect the DELT-induced place preference. Moreover, pretreatment with sulpiride (40 mg/kg, SC) did not modify the place preference induced by DPDPE or DELT. In the present study, we found that the activation of both central δ1 and δ2 opioid receptors produced rewarding effects. Furthermore, these results suggest that the rewarding effects of δ1 opioid receptor agonist may be produced through activation of the central dopaminergic system, especially dopamine D1 receptors, whereas the rewarding effects of δ2 opioid receptor agonists may be produced by some other mechanism(s).

    Notes: Abstract This paper reviews the research into and development trends to date of high-speed high-sensitivity semiconductor superlattice (SL) avalanche photodiodes (APDs) for use in 1.3 to 1.55μm wavelength optical communications. We focus on three types of SL-APDs based on an InAlGaAs-well/InAlAs-barrier structure. The first is an InAlGaAs/InAlAs polyimide-coated mesa-structure SL-APD with a high gain-bandwidth product of over 120GHz and a low multiplied dark current of a few tens of nano-amperes. Its reliability has been measured to be over 105h at 50°C. The second is a planar-structure SL-APD with a new titanium-implanted guard-ring; this structure has a longer lifetime than the mesa structure. The third is a large-receiving-area SL-APD integrated with a monolithic lens for eye-safety 1.5μm wavelength optical measurement systems.

    Notes: Abstract The continuous methanation of CO2 has been accomplished over hydrogen-reduced Ni(II)-bearing ferrite (NixFe3−xO4−δ; x=0.39, δ 〉 0) in a mixed gas flow of CO2 and H2 at 250–375 °C. The yield and the selectivity for the methanation were larger than 50% and 95%, respectively, at the initial stage of the process. They decreased to 31% and 89%, respectively, after 6 h methanation. The innovative results can be ascribed to the use of the new material; hydrogen-reduced Ni(II)-bearing ferrite. Its formation was evinced by chemical analyses and the increase in the lattice constant; the lattice constant of the Ni(II)-bearing ferrite (a0 0.8375 nm) was enlarged to 0.8379 nm by hydrogen reduction. The enlarged lattice constant was not changed during the methanation. These findings suggest that the methanation occurs at the oxygen-deficient site of the hydrogen-reduced Ni(II)-bearing ferrite, as well as the formation of water by combination of the incorporated oxygens with hydrogen. The methanation consists of three steps of the elementary reaction. First, the oxygen-deficient sites are formed by hydrogen reduction; second, CO2 is reduced to elementary carbon and two oxygen ions which are incorporated into the oxygen-deficient sites; and third, the carbon deposited on the surface of the reduced ferrite is selectively hydrogenated to CH4.

    Notes: Summary Studies on the developing prostate and SV suggest that androgens act via mesenchymal AR to elicit synthesis and secretion of various autocrine and paracrine factors that regulate epithelial and stromal growth and differentiation. Clearly, the global regulation of epithelial growth and ductal branching morphogenesis is a complex multifactorial process involving the interplay of many diffusible factors (both positive and negative regulators), extracellular matrix molecules, cell-surface receptors for growth factors, receptors for extracellular matrix molecules, and matrix-degrading enzymes. Future progress will certainly be dependent upon the utilization of appropriate, biologically relevant models to examine the respective roles of various growth factors in the growth and development of androgen target organs.

    Notes: Abstract Anemia is a major clinical sign of Japanese bovine theileriosis caused byTheileria sergenti. To investigate the possible factors causing anemia in cattle, we developed a clearance test for bovine erythrocytes (Bo-RBC) in severe combined immunodeficient (SCID) mice. Clearance of Bo-RBC in the SCID mice was significantly accelerated when the mice were inoculated with a serum sample obtained from an infected calf during a highly parasitized phase but not when they were injected with a serum sample obtained during the convalescence phase. Acceleration of the clearance of Bo-RBC was also observed in mice treated with merozoite extract. Furthermore, the clearance of Bo-RBC that had been treated with merozoite extract was accelerated. A significant hemolytic activity in infected serum (highly parasitezed phase) was observed. Activities sufficient to accelerate the clearance of Bo-RBC in SCID mice and to induce in vitro hemolysis of Bo-RBC were also observed with a merozoite extract fromT. sergenti. The results suggest a possible linkage between the in vitro hemolysis of Bo-RBC and the acceleration of Bo-RBC clearance in SCID mice.
