Notes: 1,4-dithioketo-3,6-diphenyl-pyrrolo-[3,4-c]-pyrrole, which is a good charge generation material for a near-infrared electrophotographic photoreceptor, has three polymorphs called the I, II, and III forms. The I and II forms are transformed into the III form after having been kept in suitable organic solvents. On the other hand, the III form is changed to the I and/or II forms by heat treatment above 320 °C. Among the three polymorphs, only the highly ordered III form shows the necessary and characteristic absorption in the near-infrared region.

Notes: The aim of this research was to examine the effects of metals used in dentistry upon magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Ten disk-shaped samples of metals have been used in this study. Each sample has been set into a volunteer who had produced a normal MR image when tested. The subject was imaged in the sagittal, frontal and coronal plane with a 0.1T MRI device and results examined for MR defects.Au, Ag, Au-Ag-Pd and amalgam produced no defect. Ni-Cr, Co-Cr and SUS304 expressed small amounts of MR defects, but SUS405, Pd-Co-Ni and Sm-Co expressed large defects. Those metals which create MR image degradation must not be used for fixed prosthesis or orthodontic devices both of which could easily be made from other metals. If the MR image degrading metals are to be used in dentistry, their application should be restricted to removable prosthesis.

Notes: Summary We studied the effects of AN-132 (10, 30 and 100 μmol/1), an analogue of lidocaine, on membrane currents and action potentials of single guinea-pig ventricular cells using whole-cell clamp techniques. The effects of lidocaine, an authentic class I antiarrhythmic agent were used for comparative purposes. (1) AN-132 decreased the Na current (I Na) in a concentration-dependent manner, with a greater efficacy than seen with lidocaine. The concentration of the half maximal inhibition on I Na (K d) was (31.7 μmol/1), for AN-132 and 94.9 μmol/l for lidocaine. (2) AN-132 also decreased the Ca current (I Ca), concentration-dependently, while lidocaine had only a minor effect on I Ca. The half maximal inhibition on I Ca (K d) was 23.1 μmol/l and 27.4 μmol/l for AN-132 and lidocaine, respectively. (3) AN-132 decreased the I K1, in a concentration-dependent manner; lidocaine was without effect. (4) AN-132 increased the unspecified steady state outward current, at positive potentials and depressed the time- and voltage-dependent outward K current (I K). Lidocaine had no effect on either current. (5) AN-132 shortened the action potential duration (APD), in a concentration-dependent manner, without altering the resting potential. From these findings, we conclude that apart from a potent inhibitory effect on I Na, AN-132 had a variety of effects on other currents, properties not shared by lidocaine. Such multiple blocking effects on the membrane currents may relate to the alleged potent antiarrhythmic effect of AN-132.

Notes: Summary Structural polypeptides from a number of poxviruses were analysed by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The patterns obtained with orthopoxviruses were generally quite similar to one another, but variola, monkeypox, cowpox and vaccinia viruses could be distinguished by their profiles in the molecular weight (mol. wt.) region around 30,000 to 40,000; some additional variation was found amongst cowpox and vaccinia strains. Whitepox virus was shown to have structural polypeptides indistinguishable from those of variola virus. The structural polypeptides of poxviruses belonging to other genera were different from those of the orthopoxvirus, except those of mol. wt. about 122,000 and 97,000, which were common to all viruses irrespective of genus. A polypeptide of mol. wt. about 25,000 was also observed in all cases, though its position varied slightly with the individual virus.

Notes: Summary We have carried out randomized 12-week multicentre study to compare the effects of prazosin and propranolol on blood pressure and serum lipids in 70 patients with essential hypertension after a 4 week minimum period of treatment with thiazide diuretics. After 12 weeks treatment with prazosin (n=40, 1.5–12.0 mg per day) or propranolol (n=30, 30–120 mg per day) with diuretics there was a significant blood pressure reduction from 165.1/97.9 mmHg to 151.2/90.6 mmHg and from 167/96.5 mmHg to 153/91.9 mmHg, respectively. In the 12th week a significant decrease was noted in triglyceride and in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL + VLDL-C), but no significant effects were seen in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in patients receiving prazosin. On the other hand, a significant decrease in lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) was seen in patients receiving propranolol. Twenty-six of 40 patients receiving prazosin were given an additional 12 weeks of treatment. Twenty-two of 30 patients initially treated with propranolol were switched from propranolol to prazosin after 13 weeks and given prazosin up to the 24th week. At 24 weeks, the blood pressure was 149/93.0 mmHg in the prazosin group and 155/89.2 mmHg in the group which switched from propranolol to prazosin. Triglyceride remained reduced in the prazosin group at the 24th week. In the group which switched from propranolol to prazosin, triglyceride decreased significantly over the next 12 weeks.

Notes: Abstract An investigation was made to survey the possible presence of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) in the stools of diarrheal chicks. We analyzed two outbreaks of diarrhea in broiler chicks at two independent farms in the Philippines, from which no pathogens other than Escherichia coli were found. In one outbreak at Farm # 1, all 42 isolates produced heat-labile enterotoxin (LT), with 3 of these isolates also producing heat-stable enterotoxin (ST). The 0 serotypes of 15 strains tested randomly could not be identified as any known serotype (0-antigen; 1–170). In another outbreak at Farm #2, 7 out of 52 isolates produced only LT, their subtypes being identified as O-149 or O-8, common serotypes in pig ETEC. Strains from Farm #1 did not produce any pili usually found in human ETEC. We believe this to be the first isolation of ETEC from diarrheal chicks.
