Notes: During the past year we have conducted a series of PBFA II target experiments. The design of the experiments was threefold: to characterize the response of targets to ion beams, develop our experimental diagnostic capability, and benchmark our theoretical ability to design and predict the response of the experimental diagnostics to ion-beam-heated, ICF targets. We present here an analysis of spherical exploding pusher experiments. The targets were 6-mm-diam, 100-μm-thick, Cl-doped CH spheres, filled with 1.2 atm of deuterium doped with 7 Torr of H2S. The diagnostics included XRDs, x-ray pinhole, framing, and streak cameras, and a spatially resolved, x-ray crystal spectrometer. Our analysis includes comparisons between experimental results and theoretical predictions of diagnostics responses and sulfur line emission from the compressed target using one- and two-dimensional radiation/hydrodynamic code runs. Notes: Ion beam divergence reduction will increase the power density deliverable to an ICF target and is one step towards demonstrating a credible path to target ignition. Measurement of the divergence is made with an ultracompact ion pinhole camera (UC-IPC). The UC-IPC is mounted in the PBFA II diode near the ion source at a 10° angle to compensate for beam bending in the diode's applied magnetic field. The beam is transported through an entrance pinhole and down an entrance tube to a gold scattering foil. The beam is scattered 90° through a second pinhole to CR39 film where the ion track count is recorded. This paper will describe the results of off-axis ion beam divergence measurements using the UC-IPC. Together with other diagnostics, the UC-IPC provides information about beam species and charge state, about particle energy and about divergence of the beam. This paper will also describe UC-IPC simulation using PICDIAG, a 2D code that models the ion transport and diagnostic response of experiments on Sandia's PBFA II accelerator. Notes: Kα satellite line emission from targets irradiated by intense light ion beams can be used to diagnose plasma temperatures and densities. The fluorescence lines are created as 2p electrons drop down to fill 1s vacancies that result from ion beam-induced ionizations. We present results from collisional-radiative equilibrium calculations for thin Al diagnostic layers to illustrate the dependence of the Kα emission spectrum on temperature, density, and layer thickness. We also discuss the effects of opacity on the spectrum and the contribution from Kα transitions involving excited states.

Notes: Particle Beam Fusion Accelerator II is a light-ion fusion accelerator that is presently capable of irradiating a 6-mm-diam sphere with ∼50 kJ of 5.5-MeV protons in ∼15 ns. An array of particle and x-ray diagnostics fielded on proton Inertial Confinement Fusion target experiments quantifies the incident particle beam and the subsequent target response. An overview of the ion and target diagnostic setup and capabilities will be given in the context of recent proton beam experiments aimed at studying soft x-ray emission from foam-filled targets and the hydrodynamic response of exploding-pusher targets. Ion beam diagnostics indicate ∼100 kJ of proton beam energy incident within a 1.2-cm radius of the center of the diode with an azimuthal uniformity which varied between 6% and 29%. Foam-filled target temperatures of 35 eV and closure velocities of 4 cm/μs were measured.

Notes: The CR-39/range-filter technique measures ion energy by determining the maximum filter thickness which ions can penetrate. CR-39 located behind the filter records the ions. This method is used to measure peak voltage in pulsed power accelerators. We investigated range and straggling effects in this diagnostic by exposing it to 8- and 15-MeV protons for both Al and Ta filters. The range agreed with published values to better than ±6%. The range straggling decreased for higher incident ion energy and lower atomic number, as expected, although there were differences up to a factor of 1.7 between the experimental values and predictions. The dependence of the track diameter distribution on ion energy enabled us to establish a signature which is characteristic of ions which penetrate a filter, via straggling. These results can be used to evaluate the errors present when this diagnostic is used to measure accelerator voltage.

Notes: The impedance of a diode having an annular cathode and indented anode that terminates a coaxial MITL (magnetically insulated transmission line) is measured and compared with a semiempirical model developed from calculations made using the magic code. The measurements were made on the 16-Ω electron accelerator HELIA (high-energy linear induction accelerator) operating at 3 MV. The model agrees with the measurements within the 10% measuring error and shows that the diode operates in either a load- or line-dominated regime depending on AK (anode-cathode) gap spacing. In the load-dominated regime, which corresponds to small AK gaps, the diode impedance is controlled by an effective anode-cathode gap, and the flow is approximately axial. In the line-dominated regime, which corresponds to large AK gaps, the impedance is independent of the AK gap and corresponds to the impedance associated with the minimum current solution of the MITL, with the flow becoming more radial as the AK gap is increased.

Notes: The relationship between hydrodynamics and radiative energy loss from a gas puff Z pinch was studied using helium, krypton, and a helium–krypton mixture. The results show that radiation cooling enables the magnetic field to compress the plasma to a higher electron density and a smaller final radius. The data are consistent with a simple model describing the thermalization of the plasma on the axis of the pinch. The spectrum of the krypton radiation from the mixture was harder than from the pure krypton pinch. This may be important for application of the Z pinch as a radiation source.

Notes: Pin plasma sources are used as x-ray backlights for an Al plasma produced by focusing 1.06-μm laser light to irradiances of 1012 W/cm−2. Spatially resolved absorption features of the helium- like states of ionization of the plasma allow ground-state densities of the helium and hydrogenlike stages to be measured. Comparison with simulations indicates the need for realistic opacity effects to produce a high enough state of ionization for the plasma temperature. Notes: We have measured time-resolved visible spectra emitted from a plasma formed when the output from a dye laser irradiates solid lithium. Such a plasma has potential as a source of lithium ions for ion-driven inertial confinement fusion, and it also provides a useful source for developing diagnostics. The laser delivered 0.5 J onto a 2–7-mm-diam spot, with a 900-ns pulse length. Experiments were performed with the wavelength tuned to the Li i 2s–2p resonance line at 6708 A(ring) and off resonance at 6728 A(ring). The target was a 500–1000-A(ring)-thick Li film, vacuum evaporated in situ onto a substrate. The light from the plasma was coupled into the entrance slit of a 1-m Czerny–Turner spectrograph, and the output from the spectrograph was focused onto the input slit of a streak camera. The electron density was obtained from Stark-broadened widths of Li i 2p–4d, 2p–5d, and 2p–4s, and H i 2p–4d. An irradiance of 2×106 W/cm2 at 6708 A(ring) resulted in a peak electron density of 3.9×1017 cm−3. The density decreased at lower irradiance, with an intensity threshold of 5×105 W/cm2 for producing an ionized plasma. The threshold for producing a plasma was higher with the laser tuned off resonance, although high-density lithium plasmas could still be formed at relatively low laser irradiance.

Notes: Lithium fluoride, field-enhanced ion source experiments are being performed on PBFA II. The source consists of a thin coating of LiF on a microscopically rough substrate. Diagnostics to measure ion beam energy, purity, and transport include electrical monitors, Faraday cups, nuclear activation, ion pinhole camera, Rutherford magnetic spectrograph, and shadowbox aperture array. With PBFA II operating at three-quarters energy, the source has produced 16 TW of ion power and 550 kJ of ion energy with 70% diode efficiency. Over 26 kJ of lithium beam energy has been focused to the diode center axis with a peak energy density of about 1.3 kJ/cm2 . PICDIAG simulations of the lithium focus indicate the intrinsic source divergence is about 45 mrad with a 20-μm-grade porous stainless-steel substrate.
