    Notes: Summary An autopsy case of mitochondrial encephalomyopathy with lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) is reported. It presented with generalized muscle atrophy, stroke-like episodes, schizophrenia-like mental disorder and progressive dementia. Serum lactate and pyruvate levels were high. In the biopsied muscles, ragged-red fibers were observed by light microscopy and aggregation of abnormal mitochondria with paracrystaline formation by electron microscopy. The most characteristic neuropathological findings were infarct-like lesions widespread in the cerebral cortex. In addition, this case showed some unusual pathological features: (1) diffuse moderate fibrillary gliosis in the whole cerebral and cerebellar white matter, which might have been due to metabolic disturbances; (2) several focal lesions with demyelination and numerous spheroids in the pontocerebellar fibers; and (3) marked degeneration of the posterior columns and spinocerebellar tracts. Electron microscopic examination revealed that abnormal mitochondria were markedly aggregated in smooth muscle cells and endothelium of the cerebral and cerebellar blood vessels. These fine structural findings suggest a “mitochondrial angiopathy”.

    Notes: Summary Magnetic resonance (MR) images of 29 consecutive patients with intraspinal neoplasms (9 intramedullary tumors, 20 extramedullary tumors) were reviewed to evaluated the utility of MR imaging in distinguishing the intraspinal compartmental localisation and signal characteristics of each lesion. Compartment and histology of all neoplasms were surgically proven. MR correctly assigned one of three compartments to all lesions, 9 intramedullary, 14 intradural extramedullary (6 schwannomas, 3 neurofibromas, 5 meningiomas), and 6 extradural (3 schwannomas, 1 meningioma, 1 cavernous hemangioma, 1 metastatic renal cell carcinoma). All intramedullary tumors showed swelling of the spinal cord itself. In all five extradural tumors a low intensity band was visualized between the spinal cord and tumor. On the other hand, a low intensity band was demonstrated in no cases with intradural tumors. Visualization of this low intensity band is important in differentiating extradural from intradural-extramedullary lesions. We call this low intensity band, “the extradural sign”. Signal intensity of intradural tumors varied with histology. In extramedullary tumors, signal intensity of schwannomas was similar to that of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) both on T1 weighted (inversion recovery) and T2 weighted spin echo (SE) images. On the other hand, meningiomas tended to be isointense to the spinal cord on both T1 and T2 weighted SE images. We found relatively reliable signal characteristics to discriminate meningioma from schwannoma.

    Notes: Abstract FeO(OH)·0.5 H2O powders were prepared by drying portions of a FeO(OH)·0.5 H2O sol at different relative vapor pressures, and the adsorption of water on the powders was determined. The magnitude of electrostatic potential barrier for the sol is of about 9 mJ·m−2. The reduction in the immersion enthalpy and in the surface free-energy in a range of the relative vapor pressures of 0.0–0.9 is as high as 140 mJ·m−2 and 130 mJ·m−2, respectively. It follows from the foregoing that two potential barriers may form. The electrostatic barrier presumably regulates the rate of flocculation and the “hydration barrier” (at closer separations) regulates the rate of particle coalescence or sintering. Peptizability of the FeO(OH)·0.5 H2O powders dried at relative vapor pressures between 0.4 and 0.9 was found to be fairly high, presumably because the adsorbed water prevented the formation of close contacts between the primer particles. Lowering the vapor pressure, however, resulted in a notable decrease in the peptizable amount, and also a considerable increase in the particle size of the peptized sol.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die kathodische Abscheidung des Zinks aus mit Acetat gepufferten Lösungen auf Zink- bzw. Messingkathoden wurde elektrochemisch untersucht und das Abscheidungspotential bestimmt. An Messingkathoden ist das Abscheidungspotential des Zinks unabhängig vom pH-Wert und beträgt −0,820 Volt. An Zinkkathoden steigt das Abscheidungspotential mit steigendem pH-Wert. Aus Lösungen mit einem pH-Wert kleiner als 6 kann das Zink nicht quantitativ elektrolytisch abgeschieden werden. Aus Lösungen mit dem pH-Wert 6 läßt sich hingegen das Zink sehr gut an Messingnetzkathoden abscheiden. Auf Grund der durchgeführten Versuche wurde eine Arbeitsvorschrift zur elektrolytischen Abscheidung des Zinks an Messingnetzelektroden aus Chlorid-, Acetat- und Sulfatlösungen, die mit Acetat auf den pH-Wert 6 gepuffert sind, mitgeteilt. Über das Analysenmaterial wird in der folgenden Arbeit berichtet.

    Notes: Hydroxyapatite-glass-titanium (HA-G-Ti) functionally gradient composite plates bound face-to-face by nylon wire were soaked in a simulated body fluid. The gap between the plates was filled with the precipitates after soaking for 6 months, and a tight chemical bond was formed between them. Field emission-type (FE) scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy observations revealed that the growth rate and morphology of the precipitates differed widely from the outside portion to the inside one on the surface region of the composite plates. In the portion relatively near the outside, the mutually bonded portion, needle-like precipitates with preferred orientation to the c-axis were markedly observed. From the results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis, it was found that the precipitates were Ca-deficient carbonate apatite with low crystallinity. On the other hand, HA-G-Ti composite rods were implanted in the femur of beagle dogs for 3 months. FE-SEM observations demonstrated that needle-like precipitates were deposited on both the surfaces of the composite and bone at the portion having a narrow gap, about 0.1-0.2 mm between them prepared deliberately before implantation. It was found that both the morphologies and the composition of the precipitates in vivo were similar to those in vitro. It is concluded that the HA particles on the surface of the composite act as nucleation sites for precipitation in physiologic environments, whereas the glass matrix is independent to it. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
