Notes: Abstract Few boundary-value problems in fluid mechanics can match the attention that has been accorded to the flow of fluids, Newtonian and non-Newtonian, between parallel rotating disks rotating about a common axis or about distinct axes. An interesting feature which has been recently observed is the existence of solutions that are not axially symmetric even in the case of flow due to the rotation of disks about a common axis. In this article we review the recent efforts that have been expended in the study of both symmetric and asymmetric solutions in the case of both the classical linearly viscous fluid and viscoelastic fluids.

Notes: Abstract This article reviews the behavior of materials made up of a large assemblage of solid particles under rapid and quasi static deformations. The focus is on flows at relatively high concentrations and for conditions when the interstitial fluid plays an insignificant role. The momentum and energy exchange processes are then primarily governed by interparticle collisions and Coulomb-type frictional contact. We first discuss some physical behavior —dilatancy, internal friction, fluidization and particle segregation — that are typical to the understanding of granular flows. Bagnold's seminal Couette flow experiments and his simple stress analysis are then used to motivate the first constitutive theories that use a microstructural variable — the fluctuation energy or granular temperature — governing the subscale fluctuating motion. The kinetic theories formalize the derivation of the field equations of bulk mass, momentum and energy, and permit derivation of constitutive relations for stress, flux of fluctuation energy and its dissipation rate for simple particle assemblages and when frictional rubbing contact can be ignored. These statistical considerations also show that formulation of boundary conditions needs special attention. The frictional-collisional constitutive behavior in which both Coulomb-type rubbing contact and collisional encounters are significant are discussed. There is as yet no rigorous formulation. We finally present a phenomenological approach that describes rapid flows of granular materials under simultaneous transport of heat and close with a summary of stability analyses of the basic flow down an inclined plane.

Notes: Abstract We study the flow of an Oldroyd-B fluid between two intersecting plates, one of which is fixed and the other moving along its plane. This problem was first considered by Strauss (1975) for the Maxwell fluid using a similarity transformation. We find that even in the case of a Maxwell fluid, which can be obtained by setting a specific parameter, say σ, in the Oldroyd-B model to zero, our results disagree with those of Strauss (1975). We find that circulating cells are present, adjacent to the stationary plate while Strauss (1975) finds them adjacent to the moving plate. We also delineate the effect of the coefficient σ, which is a measure of the elasticity of the flow, on the flow pattern. We find that an increase in the elastic parameter reduces the cellular structure.

Notes: Abstract We discuss the flow of BKZ fluids in an orthogonal rheometer. Some analytical results are proved, and numerical solutions are obtained for the Currie model. These solutions show a boundary layer behavior at high Reynolds numbers and the possibility of discontinuous solutions or nonexistence at high Weissenberg numbers.

Notes: Abstract The note considers viscoelastic fluids which undergo an instantaneous homogeneous deformation consisting of shear superposed on triaxial extension. Two relations involving the stress and deformation components are presented, which are valid for all such fluids, and hence are termed “universal relations”. The first contains the Lodge-Meissner relation as a special case; the second arises when a block is deformed by shear traction only. It relates dimensional changes to the amount of shear.

Notes: Abstract In his study of combined finite extension and torsion of a nonlinear, incompressible, isotropic elastic circular cylinder, Rivlin [1] established a relation for the torsional stiffness which depends only on the axial force, the axial extension ratio and the radius of the undeformed cylinder, in the case of small twist. The relationship did not depend on the structure of the stored energy function and is hence a “universal relation”. In this paper, we extend Rivlin's result to the case of combined extension and torsion of a cylindrical mixture of a nonlinear elastic solid and fluid.

Notes: Abstract A nonlinear isotropic elastic block is subjected to a homogeneous deformation consisting of simple shear superposed on triaxial extension. Two new relations are established for this deformation which are valid for all nonlinear elastic isotropic materials, and hence are universal relations. The first is a relation between the stretch ratios in the plane of shear and the amount of shear when the deformation is supported only by shear tractions. The second relation is established for a thin-walled cylinder under combined extension, inflation and torsion. Each material element of the cylinder undergoes the same local homogeneous deformation of shear superposed on triaxial extension. The properties of this deformation are used to establish a relation between pressure, twisting moment, angle of twist and current dimensions when no axial force is applied to the cylinder. It is shown that these relations also apply for a mixture of a nonlinear isotropic solid and a fluid.
