Notes: We demonstrate low-threshold lasing at 4 K in optically pumped hemispherical In0.2Ga0.8As single-quantum-well microcavities. The incident threshold pump power density is 11 kW/cm2 corresponding to an absorbed power density of about 320 W/cm2, and the measured spontaneous emission factor β is about 0.01.

Notes: We have compressed strongly chirped optical pulses from a synchronously pumped In0.53Ga0.47As/InP multiple quantum well surface-emitting laser operating with an external cavity. The pulses, initially exhibiting a strong up-chirp with a time-bandwidth product of more than 100 times the Fourier transform limit, were compressed to 77 fs using dispersion and soliton compression in a negative group-velocity-dispersion fiber. Chirp compensation using a diffraction grating pair followed by soliton compression in a fiber gave pulses as short as 21 fs.

Notes: We report high power and high efficiency operation of a vertical cavity surface emitting GaAs laser in an external cavity. The maximum cw output power from the fundamental TEM00 mode was 700 mW at a temperature of 77 K when pumped by a cw krypton-ion laser with 1.8 W pump power. We obtained an absolute quantum efficiency (pump photons to lasing photons) of 44%, and a differential efficiency above threshold of 58%.

Notes: Abstract A four input-port and an eight output-port optoelectronic matrix switch using InGaAsP/InP hetero-junction switching photodiodes was fabricated and its characteristics studied. The characteristics of the broadband switching equipment, as well as those of individual components, such as the switching photodiodes, InGaAsP/InP semiconductor lasers, eight-port optical dividers and receiver circuits, are discussed from the viewpoint of analogue signal switching. The signal-to-noise ratio attained is more than 40dB for a 30MHz bandwidth television signal. Differential gain and differential phase are less than 2% and 2°, respectively, isolation is higher than 80 dB. Crosstalk between adjacent channels is suppressed below-60 dB over the band between d.c. and 100 MHz by a simple metallic shield at the input and output electric circuits.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the experimental results of brittle-crack propagation and arrest on structural steels are analyzed using the finite-difference method. The test specimens used are double-tension and double-cantilever type (DCB). It is found that dynamic consideration is indispensable for general interpretation of fast fracture and crack arrest and material toughness can be defined as a function of temperature and crack velocity. Using the defined fracture toughness, crack-propagation-arrest behavior can be predicted by crack-propagation simulation if the condition of boundary loading of a specimen is known. This implies a possibility to develop simple methods for crack-arrester design.

Notes: Abstract As part of an extensive investigation on strand and cable properties, epoxy oversized models of strands have been manufactured using a newly developed technique. Axial and torsional loadings have been applied to the models. Strains, stresses and displacements have been determined using mechanical and electrical strain gages, dial gages and brittle coatings. The results obtained are compared with calculations using a previously developed theory. The response of a reference structure in which each wire is assumed to act independently is also compared with the response of the strand. Several discrepancies with theory are pointed out. It is believed that these are the first systematic measurements taken on strands.
