    Notes: A synthetic extract, prepared from 44 pure chemicals on the basis of the analytical data on the leg meat extract of the boiled snow crab, Chionoecetes opilio, satisfactorily reproduced the taste of the natural extract except for a slight lack of body and mildness. A series of taste panel assessments on synthetic extracts prepared by omitting or adding extractive component(s) were carried out by a triangle difference test and changes in taste profile were assessed. Only 12 components, Ala, Arg, Glu, Gly, glycine betaine, AMP, CMP, GMP, Na+, K+, Cl−, and PO43-, were found to contribute more or less toward producing the characteristic taste of the snow crab.

    Notes: Summary NPA, applied in a 2–3 cm band around the middle protion of 2- or 3-year-old internodes of three vertically-oriented six-year-old Sugi trees (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don), brought about abnormal thickening all over the upper segment from the NPA treatment. Xylem tissues above and below the treatment, as well as at the treated area itself, was examined by ordinary light microscopy and by scanning electron microscopy. The results obtained seemed to indicate that the tissue formed after treatment in the upper segment of the stem was true compression wood. In the lower segment of the stem, no abnormal tissue but a small amount of latewood-like tissue was produced after treatment. Referring to the previous studies in which morphactin, another IAA transport inhibitor, has induced compression wood, we consider it likely that compression wood formation must be induced by high concentrations of endogenous IAA, which could be brought about by blockage created not only by NPA and morphactins, but also by IAA transport inhibitors in general.

    Notes: Summary Morphactin IT3456, applied in a 2–3 cm band around the middle portion of 2- or 3-year-old internodes of artificially inclined 5-year-old Japanese larches, induced compression wood formation on both the upper and the lower sides of the inclined stem above the treated region, while it inhibited compression wood formation below this region. These results seem to suggest that a high concentration ratio of endogenous auxin to sugar (auxin/sugar) in the differentiating xylem tissue is necessary and sufficient for compression wood formation, and that compression wood formation under natural conditions requires polar transport of auxin which supplies and maintains high concentration of auxin along the undeside of the stem.

    Notes: Summary CT studies of 50 patients with spontaneous subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) and 100 randomly selected patients were reviewed with regard to the size of the frontal and temporal horns of the lateral ventricles. The temporal horn was classified into four grades, based on the size of its posterior portion at the level of the midbrain. The horn was clearly visible in 66% of patients with SAH, but in only 2% of controls. In the SAH group, the temporal horn tended to dilate sooner than the frontal horn after haemorrhage and could be seen clearly in a larger proportion of patients. Thus, assessment of the size of the temporal horn appears to be a simple and sensitive method for assessing ventricular dilatation. In addition, dilatation of the temporal horn may prove to be an important indirect sign suggesting SAH in patients in whom no high density clot is seen on CT.

    Notes: Abstract Shell microstructure and mantle behaviour relating to shell cementation was studied on adult oysters,Crassostrea gigas, Saccostrea mordax, andS. kegaki (collected from Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, in 1989 and 1990). At the place of cementation, the prismatic structure of the outermost shell layer is modified to a significant structure. This structure, named the ‘ridge-and-furrow structure’, consists of calcified ridges a few microns wide separated by furrows, both arranged parallel to the shell growth direction. The furrows are ultimately filled by shell material. The prismatic and ridge-and-furrow structures gradually merge in a transitional area where an intermediate type of the two structures occurs. The small size of the crystal units of the ridges and furrows is due to the close distribution of crystal seeds, especially close to pre-existing ridges. This is the basis of the difference between the ridge-and-furrow and the prismatic structures and also makes the former structure functional for cementation, in contrast to the latter. At the site of ongoing shell cementation, the mantle margin adpresses the shell margin onto the substrate. Experiments show that this pressing action is essential for cementation and probably also for the formation of the ridge-and-furrow structure. Even the right valve, which oysters nerve use to cement in natural conditions, forms the ridge-and-furrow structure and cements to the substrate if the pressing action of its mantle margin is induced under artificial conditions. Behavioural changes probably led oysters to switch from byssal attachment to cementation within a short time span when they acquired their cementing habit.

    Notes: Abstract A female-specific protein from the hemolymph, and a related ovarian protein were identified in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas using immunological procedures. The latter protein was isolated from ovarian extract by a combination of precipitation in distilled water, ammonium sulfate fractionation, hydroxylapatite chromatography and gel filtration on a Sepharose 6B column, and was identified as a macromolecular glycolipoprotein of ∼500 kD; sodium dodecylsulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, under reducing conditions, revealed seven heterogeneous polypeptides. Using a specific antiserum against purified protein, we also examined the immunohistochemical distribution of the protein at light- and electron-microscopic levels. Light microscopy revealed its presence in the oocytes, and electron microscopy identified it in yolk granules and the vitelline coat of the oocytes. These results indicate that the purified protein is a vitellin-like protein. Since no organ other than the ovary reacted with the antiserum, it is probable that the protein is produced inside the ovary, probably autosynthetically by oocytes.
