Notes: A new excitation/detection scheme for Fourier-transform–ion-cyclotron-resonance (FT-ICR) studies is described. The ions are created in the center of a hyperbolic Penning trap and excited to a large magnetron radius. Parametric-mode excitation is used to drive the cyclotron motion. The ions are detected in the conventional dipole-mode detection scheme by use of a segmented ring electrode. Since the resonance frequencies of excitation (ν+−ν−) and detection (ν+, the reduced cyclotron frequency) differ by the magnetron frequency (ν−), this method allows the simultaneous excitation and detection of the ion motion.

Notes: The design of a novel electrode structure for electric-field ionization of Rydberg atoms in a fast atomic beam is described. It allows the resolution of the ion signal from Rydberg atoms with adjacent effective principal quantum numbers n* in the range of 14≤n*≤40 and minimizes the volume where field ionization takes place. These features drastically reduce the number of background events arising from collisions of fast atoms with residual gas molecules and thus are essential for trace analysis applications of the technique of resonance ionization spectroscopy in collinear geometry.

Notes: Laser resonance ionization has been applied to ionize radioactive atoms released from thick ISOLDE/CERN targets. Laser light from pulsed dye lasers with a high repetition rate (10 kHz) was used for stepwise excitation and ionization. By this method, efficiency as well as the selectivity of the target/ion source system could be improved. In a series of off-line and on-line studies, the resonance ionization of elements with different ionization potentials, such as Yb (Ei=6.2 eV), Tm (Ei=5.8 eV) and Sn (Ei=7.3 eV), was investigated. For Yb, photoionization efficiencies of up to 15% have been measured. An efficiency of 0.2% was obtained for Sn at the on-line separator ISOLDE-3. However, this value can be improved by about two orders of magnitude using a transition to an autoionizing state at 59 375.9 cm−1.

Notes: Abstract Neutron rich205Hg (T 1/2=5.2 min) was produced and on-line mass separated at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. The polarization achieved by optical pumping via the atomic line (6s 21 S 0↔6s6p 3 P 1,λ=2 537Å) was monitored by theβ decay asymmetry. Hyperfine structure and isotopic shift of the205Hg absorption line was determined by Zeeman scanning. In addition a magnetic resonance was performed on the polarized205Hg nuclei in the atomic ground state. The results are: $$I(^{205} Hg) = \tfrac{1}{2}$$ (confirmed);μ I (205Hg)=0.5915 (1)μ N (uncorrected for diamagnetism); isotopic shiftδv204/205=v(205Hg)-v(204Hg)=−1.8 (1) GHz.μ I and IS are discussed briefly in the frame of current literature.

Notes: Abstract The hyperfine structure of the lowest1P1 state of25Mg,43Ca,87Sr,135Ba and137Ba have been measured by the level-crossing and anticrossing technique. The magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole coupling constants determined by these measurements are25Mg(3s3p1P1):A=− 7.7(5) MHz; 16 MHz〉B〉0 MHz,43Ca(4s4p1P1):A=− 15.3(4) MHz; ¦B¦〈12 MHz,87Sr (5s5p1P1:A=− 3.4(4) MHz;B=39(4) MHz,135Ba(6s6p1P1):A=− 97.5(1.0) MHz;B=31(9)MHz,137Ba(6s6p1P1):A=−109.2(1.2) MHz;B=51(12)MHz. The results have been compared with the predictions of the Breit-Wills theory of the two-electron hyperfine structure using the experimental data on the3P states. Large discrepancies have been observed which are due to different radial wave functions of thes andp electron in the triplet and singlet system. This effect has been taken into account by fitting the data with the aid of two additional parameters. That this procedure is justified is shown by an analysis of the fine structure splitting, the life times, and the isotopic shifts in thesp configurations of group II elements.

Notes: Abstract An optical pumping apparatus has been attached to the reconstructed ISOLDE on-line mass separator at CERN in order to obtain nuclear data of isotopes far fromβ stability. As first results the spins of76Rb (T 1/2=36.8 s) and119Cs (T 1/2=37.7 s) have been determined byβ radiation detected optical pumping (β-RADOP) to beI=1 andI=9/2 respectively.

Notes: Abstract The extension of the Nuclear Radiation Detected Optical Pumping method to mass-separated samples of isotopes far off stability is presented for a series of light Hg isotopes produced at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. The isotope under investigation is transferred by an automatic transfer system into the optical pumping apparatus. Zeeman scanning of an isotopically pure Hg spectral lamp is used to reach energetic coincidence with the hyperfine structure components of the 6s 2 1 S 06s6p 3P1,λ=2,537 Å resonance line of the investigated isotope and the Hg lamp. The orientation built up by optical pumping is monitored via the asymmetry or anisotropy of the nuclear radiation. Nuclear spins, magnetic moments, electric quadrupole moments and the isotope shifts are obtained for181Hg-191Hg using theβ asymmetry as detector. The extension of the method using theγ anisotropy is discussed and test measurements on193Hg are presented. This paper describes the experimental procedure, results, and discussion are given in a following publication.

Notes: Abstract The hyperfine structure splitting and the isotope shift in the (6 s2 1S0 - 6s 6p3P1,λ=2,537 Å) line of very neutron deficient Hg isotopes were determined by the β radiation detected optical pumping method (β-RADOP). In addition, nuclear magnetic resonance was observed in the atomic ground state. The results are Mean-square nuclear charge radii are calculated. Interpreting the sudden change of nuclear radius between187Hg and185Hg δ〈r2〉187,185=0.42(5)fm2 as oblate-prolate shape transition, one obtains δ〈β2〉 =0.054(5).

Notes: Abstract Excited states in198,199Po have been studied by in-beamγ-ray spectroscopy. These nuclei were produced in the 4n and 5n reaction channels for 115 MeV20Ne on183W-targets. Multipolarities and mixing ratios ofγ-transitions were determined from DCO-ratios, leading to spin/parity assignments. In198Po,γ-cascades have been observed above several excited levels that are similar to the vibration-like structure built on the ground state. In199Po, the coupling of the oddi13/2 neutron seems to favor the spherical shape of the even core; no levels resembling the intruder states of the even nuclei are found. A semi-quantitative evaluation of the cross-sections for nuclei produced in fission and multi-particle transfer is presented.
