    Notes: The uptake of the neurotransmitter candidates glutamate and aspartate into synaptosomes and bulk-isolated glia was considerably more rapid than the uptake of the suspected transmitter-precursor glutamine at low concentrations (10 μM). Glial uptake in all cases was one-fifth to one-third of synaptosomal, whereas isolated neurons attained very low tissue: medium ratios, probably reflecting damage to the neurons sustained during isolation. The glial and synaptosomal uptakes of glutamate both obeyed dual high- and low-affinity kinetics and were negligible in the absence of external sodium, whereas glutamine was taken up in either case by an exclusively low-affinity transport system exhibiting no sodium-dependence. Glutamine was considerably metabolized to glutamate following transport by both glia and synaptosomes whereas glutamate remained unmetabolized

    Notes: Abstract— The enzyme in rat brain responsible for the de-acetylation of N-acetyl-aspartic acid has been partially purified. In contrast to the enzyme from hog kidney which is stable at 70°C, it rapidly denatures above 57°C. The rat brain enzyme has the same Km for its substrate and the same solubility in ammonium sulphate solution as the hog kidney enzyme. Results of migration on starch gel electro-phoreses and isoelectric focusing indicate a pI for the amidohydrolase of 5.1. A variety of potential substrates, modulators, and inhibitors have been examined.

    Notes: Abstract Surprisingly little is known about the use of neuromuscular blockers (NMBs) in intensive care units (ICUs) in the USA. Recently, Klessig et al. [1] surveyed anesthesiologists/intensivists in the USA and found that the 55% who responded used NMBs in the ICU in an average of 10 patients per ICU per month. Anxiolytics and analgesics were administered concomitantly with NMBs, but a majority of respondents did not use electrophysiologic measures of the degree of blockade. Another survey of predominantly medical ICUs also demonstrated widespread use of NMBs, but internists did not use sedation/analgesia as frequently as anesthesiologists for patients receiving NMBs, and infrequently monitored the degree of neuromuscular blockade [2]. Because these were retrospective surveys, we decided to monitor prospectively the use of NMBs in our ICUs. The use of NMBs was ascertained by daily review of pharmacy records and, when use was documented, the patients hospital records were reviewed. Where information was missing or not found, attending physicians were interviewed. On averages, one patient per month per ICU received NMBs. Approximately 5% of neonatal and pediatric, and 1% of adult, ICU patients received NMBs. Eighty-three percent of patients received NMBs to facilitate mechanical ventilation, and mortality was high (51%) in those critically ill patients. More than half the patients were treated for ≤24 h, the remainder for 2 days to 〉3 weeks. Twitch monitors were used for monitoring the degree of neuromuscular blockade in adult patients, and all patients received sedatives/analgesics. We estimated that the risk of clinically significant, prolonged neuromuscular blockade following the discontinuation of NMBs was 5% per year. Our data demonstrate that NMBs in our practice are used less frequently than previous surveys indicate, that it is possible to change behavior with respect to the use of monitors of neuromuscular treatment, and that clinically significant prolonged blockade was an infrequent but serious problem in this population of critically ill patients.

    Notes: Abstract The existence of extensive autosomal polymorphism due to pericentric inversions in a colony of deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus, has been reported (Arakaki and Sparkes, personal communication). A background of intersubspecific hybridization was suspected to have contributed to the observed polymorphism. The present study describes findings on two separate subspecies, P. m. hollisteri and P. m. bairdii. Autosomal polymorphism existed within each subspecies. In P. m. bairdii, the two polymorphic autosomal pairs were identified. In one pair, a large subterminal element was homologous to an acrocentric of comparable size, while in the other pair, a small mediocentric and an acrocentric were homologous. Among splenic cells of animals made heteromorphic for the larger of the two autosomal pairs, the tendency toward reconstitution of homomorphic cell types was observed. This was taken as evidence of somatic segregation among immunologically competent cells.

    Notes: Abstract Phylogenetically tetraploid species of the fish order Isospondyli generally have twice the mean ribosomal gene content as closely related species on the phylogenetically diploid level. Considerable intraspecific variation of rDNA amount was observed. These findings are discussed in view of the hypothesis that selective loss of ribosomal genes may account for diminishing genic activity in phylogenetically tetraploid organisms.
