Notes: An analysis of PZT-7A plates driven into thickness-extensional trapped energy vibrations by the application of a voltage to strip electrodes is performed. The plate waves in the unelectroded region that carry energy away from the trapped mode are included in the treatment. The solution consists of a sum of the driven thickness solution and the pertinent plate eigensolutions for shorted electrodes in the electroded region and for zero surface charge in the unelectroded region. Since the sum of the solutions in each region satisfies the differential equations and boundary conditions on the major surfaces exactly, the substitution into the appropriate variational principle of linear piezoelectricity yields integral conditions across the thickness of the plate at the edge of the electrodes. The resulting system of inhomogeneous linear algebraic equations yields the response from very low frequency to slightly above the first thickness-extensional frequency of the unelectroded plate.

Notes: Abstract The problem of estimating the common mean μ of k independent and univariate inverse Gaussian populations IG(μ, λ i ), i=1,..., k with unknown and unequal λ's is considered. The difficulty with the maximum likelihood estimator of μ is pointed out, and a natural estimator % MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafeart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXafv3ySLgzGmvETj2BSbqefm0B1jxALjhiov2D% aebbfv3ySLgzGueE0jxyaibaiiYdd9qrFfea0dXdf9vqai-hEir8Ve% ea0de9qq-hbrpepeea0db9q8as0-LqLs-Jirpepeea0-as0Fb9pgea% 0lrP0xe9Fve9Fve9qapdbaqaaeGacaGaaiaabeqaamaabaabcaGcba% acciGaf8hVd0MbaGaaaaa!3D38!\[\tilde \mu \] of μ along the lines of Graybill and Deal is proposed. Notes: Summary Films of cobalt and nickel were electroplated in the presence of an external magnetic-induction field. This resulted in the deposition of magnetic films which show, in addition to a magnetic anisotropy, also thermo-e.m.f. anisotropy. The latter is a new effect, not deriving from the anisotropy in electrical conduction deduced earlier by Kornevet al. on the basis of measurements of transmission coefficients of polarized RF field.

Notes: Summary Studies on the genetics of leaf blight caused byAlternaria triticina using generation mean analysis revealed that additive components played a major role, but that dominance components also contributed significantly in controlling the variability for leaf blight resistance in wheat crosses. Furthermore, the additive x additive type of epistasis was predominant in the first three crosses, whereas in the fourth cross additive x dominance (j) and dominance x dominance (1) components of epistasis were most significant. Because of this it may be desirable to follow a simple recurrent selection scheme for higher tolerance, to isolate resistant plants from the segregating populations derived from crosses of parents of diverse origin following the pedigree method of breeding. CPAN-1887 was very tolerant to leaf blight in the present study and should be utilized in hybridization programs to develop leaf-blight-resistant varieties.

Notes: Summary Root uptake rate and root uptake coefficient for Cl ions were determined in corn at two transpiration rates and three solution concentrations. Transpiration rate had pronounced effect on root uptake rate and root uptake coefficient especially at low solution concentration. Root uptake rate increased as the concentration of Cl ions in the solution increased. The root uptake coefficient decreased as Cl concentration in the solution increased from 20 meq/l to 40 meq/l but it did not change when the concentration was raised to 80 meq/l.

Notes: Summary Magnitude of Na and Cl accumulation around wheat roots was studied under different transpiration conditions in a loamy sand soil salinized with sodium chloride to an electrical conductivity of 4.1 mmho/cm in the saturation extract. A significant correlation was observed between rate of water loss per unit root length and Na and Cl content of the soil closely adhering to the roots. Under high transpiration condition, maximum ion accumulation occurred in the apparent free space of roots followed by the soil closely adhering to the roots. Results indicate that salt concentration at the root surface is markedly altered under the influence of transpiration rate such that under high transpiration conditions, the plant roots may be exposed to a much higher salt concentration than that anticipated from an analysis of the bulk soil samples.

Notes: Abstract Superluminal concepts since 1962 have continued to gain momentum for numerous discussions. The so-called (yet unconfirmed) tachyons have been basically dealt in the literature with a second-order field equation, leaving aside a probable exploitation through a simpler first-order mechanism. Initiating this (first-order field) approach we show that the Dirac invariance under joint reversal symmetries of the mass and four-momentum leads to a (generalised) Lorentz symmetry. This yields solutions of a faster-than-light particle of definite negative mass (referred to here as ‘bisiston’) with possibly annihilating and other features. How can the ‘minus’ sign in the mass, —m, be interpreted? It seems, it corresponds to a mass-repulsion process leading to a very probable form of the (missing) ± symmetry in the mass (i.e. gravitational) interaction (comparable to the universalV ±A result). This argument appears to be extremely plausible in context of our wide universe where such a symmetry cannot be ruled out in the large.
