    Notes: The combination experiments of ac and dc (as the thermally stimulated polarization current) suggest that, by the dc process, there appeared the positive and negative ion-depleted region at the interface between glass bulk and the positive ion-depleted region near the anode. This may be the ionic analog for a p-n junction under reverse bias of a semiconductor. The relaxation in polarized glass would take place by the annihilation of the positive and negative ion-depleted region by back-diffusion of oxygen ions from the positive ion-depleted region and of sodium ions from the bulk.

    Notes: Gradient-driven instabilities and the subsequent nonlinear evolution of generated vortices in sheared E×B flows are investigated for magnetized plasmas with and without gravity (magnetic curvature) and magnetic shear by using theory and implicit particle simulations. In the linear eigenmode analysis, the instabilities considered are the Kelvin–Helmholtz (K–H) instability and the resistive interchange instability. The presence of the shear flow can stabilize these instabilities. The dynamics of the K–H instability and the vortex dynamics can be uniformly described by the initial flow pattern with a vorticity localization parameter ε. The observed growth of the K–H modes is exponential in time for linearly unstable modes, secular for the marginal mode, and absent until driven nonlinearly for linearly stable modes. The distance between two vortex centers experiences rapid merging while the angle θ between the axis of the vortices and the external shear flow increases. These vortices proceed toward their overall coalescence, while shedding small-scale vortices and waves. The main features of vortex dynamics, the nonlinear coalescence and the tilt or the rotational instabilities of vortices, are shown to be given by using a low-dimension Hamiltonian representation for interacting vortex cores in the shear flow.

    Notes: We have reported the presence of a histamine synthesizing enzyme, histidine decarboxylase (HDC), and histamine degrading enzymes, histamine N-methyltransferase (HMT) and histaminase (diamine oxidase, DAO) in human nasal mucosa and the histamine content of the mucosa. In this study, we demonstrate the influences of the toluene diisocyanate (TDI) treatment on the histamine content and these enzyme activities in guinea-pigs as an animal model of respiratory hypersensitivity. Application of TDI to the nasal vestibuli induced intense nasal allergy-like and mild asthma-like responses in TDI-sensitized guinea pigs. Increases in the histamine content and HDC and HMT activities were observed in the nasal mueosa and lung of TDI-sensitized guinea pigs. No apparent changes in the histaminase activities were observed in either the nasal mucosa or the lung. These data suggest that the turnover rate of histamine is increased in the nasal mucosa and the lung of guinea pigs with respiratory hypersensitivity.

    Notes: Histamine content and enzyme activities of histamine metabolism, histidine decarboxy-lase (HDC), histamine N-methyltransferase (HMT) and histaminase (diamine oxidase, DAO) in human nasal mucosa were determined with a highly sensitive and specific fluorescent method which was combined with high performance liquid chromatography. Histamine content and HDC activity were determined in 10 specimens of nasal polyp, nine specimens of maxillary sinus and five specimens of inferior turbinate. HMT and histaminase activities were determined in 15 specimens of nasal polyp, nine specimens of maxillary sinus and five specimens of inferior turbinate obtained during surgical therapy. Histamine and activities of HDC, HMT and histaminase were detected in all specimens except the case of histaminase activity in one specimen of nasal polyp. The mean values of histamine content and activities of HDC, HMT and histaminase of human nasal mucosa were 137.3 nmol/g wet weight, 26.3 fmol/min/mg protein, 26.4 pmol/min/mg protein and 0.5 pmol/min/mg protein, respectively. Histamine content in the mucosal tissue of the maxillary sinuses was significantly higher than that of nasal polyps or inferior turbinates. There were no significant differences in HDC activities among three kinds of nasal mucosa. Activities of HMT and histaminase, including their kinetic constants (Km and Vmax values for histamine) indicated that HMT has a greater potential than histaminase for histamine degradation in the human nasal mucosa. The presence of these enzymes suggests that these activities constitute an important modulating factor in histamine mediated allergic and inflammatory reactions in human nasal mucosa.

    Notes: A primary adenoid cystic carcinoma of the skin is reported. Light microscopy revealed pseudocysts. PAS-positive basement membrane and true glandular lumen, which in aggregates are specific for adenoid cystic carcinoma. Perineural invasion was also observed. Ultrastructural examinations revealed three types of cystic spaces; pseudocysts, true glandular lumens and intercellular spaces. Enzyme histochemical examinations showed positive reactions for eccrine enzymes, including phosphorylase and succinic dehydrogenase and negative for apocrine enzymes. Immunolocalization of collagens and laminin revealed that basement membranes of the pseudocysts involve Type V collagen as well as Type IV collagen and laminin.

    Notes: Abstract The synthesis and properties of polymethylsilazanes were investigated. Controlled ammonolysis of methyl(triisocyanato)silane (MTIS) at the molar ratios NH3/MTIS=4 and 6 gave polymethylsilazanes3 and4, which were soluble in tetrahydrofuran (THF) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) but insoluble when isolated as powders. The concentrated polymer solution showed spinnability and film formation. Thermogravimetric analysis of3 and4 showed weight losses of 67 and 16%, respectively. Species4 may be a precursor for silicon/carbon/nitrogen ceramics.

    Notes: Abstract The complexation of zinc(II) with chloride, bromide and iodide ions has been studied by calorimetry in hexamethylphosphoric triamide (HMPA) containing 0.1 mol-dm−3 (n-C4H9)4NClO4 as a constant ionic medium at 25°C. The formation of [ZnXn](2−n)+ (n=1,2,3,4 for X=Cl; n=1,2 for X=Br, I) is revealed, and their formation constants, enthalpies and entropies were determined. It is proposed that the zinc(II) ion is fourcoordinated in HMPA and the coordinating HMPA molecules are stepwise replaced with halide ions to form [ZnXn(hmpa)4−n](2−n)+ (n=1−4), as is the case for the cobalt(II) ion. Furthermore, the formation of [ZnClI], [ZnBrI], [ZnBrCl] and [ZnBrCl2]− is revealed in the relevant ternary systems. It is found that the affinity of a given halide ion X− to [ZnCl]+, [ZnBr]+ and [Znl]+ is practically the same.

    Notes: Abstract The P-glycoprotein (P-Gp) encoded by the human multidrug-resistance gene MDR1 has been suggested to play certain roles in the blood-brain barrier (BBB). However, the detailed mechanism of the activity of P-Gp in multidrug-resistance (MDR) remains unclear in human glioma. We examined the localization of P-Gp in human glioma by immunohistochemical (IHC) and immunoelectron microscopic (IEM) methods with anti P-Gp monoclonal antibodies (C219, MRK16). We also examined MDR1 expression in primary glioma and xenografts by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) with human MDR1-specific primers. The IHC study showed no P-Gp expression on tumour cells but it was present on capillary endothelial cells and IEM analysis showed definitive localization on their luminal surface. MDR1 gene expression was detected in eight primary glioma and three normal brain specimens by RT-PCR, but not in glioma xenografts. The lack of MDR1 expression in these cells appears to be a consequence of the replacement of the original human stroma, including blood vessels, by murine stroma in glioma xenografts. The unique distribution of P-Gp on the capillary blood vessels was confirmed in human glioma by the results of immunohistochemical and molecular biological studies.
