Notes: Abstract There is strong evidence for a complex network-like interaction between cytokines, growth factors and other mediators being responsible for cell growth and differentiation as well as for the outcome of an inflammatory reaction. Therefore, the regulation of the production of the ubiquitous proinflammatory cytokine interleukin 6 (IL-6) by transforming growth factor β (TGFP) was investigated. Human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), human normal keralinocytes (HNK), and an epidermoid carcinoma cell line (KB) were treated with TGFβ or TGFβ2 and subsequently IL-6 secretion was evaluated. Addition of TGFβ1 as well as TGFβ2 to PBMC, HNK and KB cells resulted in a significantly increased release of IL-6 activity. The inducing effect of TGFβ was dose dependent and maximal when supernatants were harvested 48 h after stimulation. In addition, upon Western blot analysis using a monoclonal IL-6 antibody significantly increased amounts of IL-6 protein were detected in KB cell supernatants following stimulation with TGFβ 1. These results were further confirmed at the transcriptional level using a cDNA probe specific for IL-6 and Northern blot analysis. Accordingly, an increased IL-6 inRNA expression in PBMC or KB cells was detected following TGFβl treatment. These findings indicate that TGFβ in contrast to its antiinflammatory capacities also may stimulate IL-6 production in PBMC and keratinocytes. This further supports the possibly important immunoregulatory role of growth factors such as TGFβ.

Notes: Abstract The long-term graft function after withdrawal of steroids from maintenance immunosuppression was analyzed in 98 kidney recipients (59 on cyclosporin monotherapy, 39 on cycloporin plus azathioprine) who had not developed an early rejection episode when prednisolone was discontinued. Seven years after steroid withdrawal the probability of an increase in serum creatinine (〉20% of baseline levels) was 51%. The increase in creatinine was associated with sclerosing arteriopathy as a marker of chronic rejection in 29 of 43 graft biopsies. The addition of azathioprine had no, effect on the stability of long-term graft function and did not influence the 7-year graft survival rate in this highly selected group of patients.

Notes: Abstract Urinary excretion of endothelin was measured by radioimmunoassay in children with diabetes mellitus during severe ketoacidosis and 12 days later when blood pH and blood glucose concentrations were normal. Metabolically stable diabetic children served as controls. Results from apparently healthy children without diabetes mellitus were used as normal values. Renal tubular injury was evaluated by the urinary excretion of the proximal tubular marker α1-microglobulin and the distal tubular marker Tamm-Horsfall protein (THP). During ketoacidosis we detected a decreased glomerular filtration rate associated with highly significant changes in the excretion of α1-microglobulin, indicating proximal tubular damage, and THP, suggesting disturbance of cells of the ascending loop of Henle. The daily excretion of endothelin was unaltered but the ratio of endothelin/creatinine or endothelin excretion/creatinine clearance were significantly enhanced. In conclusion, we could demonstrate that, despite a proximal and distal tubular cell dysfunction, endothelin excretion when related to creatinine clearance may be a consequence of disturbed proximal tubular function or dysfunction of the renal medulla.

Notes: Abstract The representations of a compact Lie groupG can be studied via the construction of an associated “model space.” This space has the property that when geometrically quantized its Hilbert space contains every irreducible representation ofG just once. We construct an analogous space for the group DiffS 1. It is naturally a complex manifold with a holomorphic, free action of DiffS 1 preserving a family of pseudo-Kahler structures. All of the “good” coadjoint orbits are obtained from our space by Hamiltonian constraint reduction. We briefly discuss the connection to the work of Alekseev and Shatashvili.

Notes: Abstract The connection between different supermoduli spaces is studied. It is shown that the coincidence of the moduli space of (1/1) dimensional complex manifolds andN=2 superconformal moduli space is connected with hiddenN=2 superconformal symmetry in the superstring theory.

Notes: Summary Bryophyte flushes in the vicinity of Canada Glacier in S.S.S.I. No. 12, Taylor Valley, Southern Victoria Land, were investigated in order to describe the vegetation present and to investigate factors affecting vegetation distribution. Biomass values from 950 to 1,250 g m−2 (dry weight) and vegetated areas up to 14,450 m2 indicate this is a significant area of bryophyte growth in Southern Victoria Land. The pattern of plant species in relation to water flow was investigated through detailed mapping. This is the first confirmed identification of Bryum argenteum, and Pottia heimii, and the first report of Bryum pseudotriquetrum from this area. Tissue nitrogen values for plants at this site are lower than other reported data, but it seems unlikely this would be a limiting factor for growth. It is concluded that, in this area, summer water flow in conjunction with microtopography has the greatest influence in determining where mosses, cyanobacteria and algae grow.

Notes: Abstract The invertebrate faunal composition of moss-dominated flushes near the Canada Glacier was, as in similar habitats in continental Antarctic regions, numerically dominated by protozoa, rotifers, nematodes and tardigrades. Mites were of lesser abundance. Although collembola occur in the Taylor Valley, none were found at the study site. The finding of a catenulid flatworm is significant as microturbellarians have only rarely been recorded from Antarctica. Nematode, tardigrade and rotifer densities recorded were comparable to those in other Antarctic regions. These groups were found at a mean depth ranging from 5 to 10.83 mm in the moss. A greater percentage of all groups were in the upper 5 mm of moss cores in post-melt samples than in pre-melt samples.
