Notizen: Summary The spatial patterns of diffuse, primitive, classic (cored) and compact (burnt-out) subtypes of β/A4 deposits were studied in coronal sections of the frontal lobe and hippocampus, including the adjacent gyri, in nine cases of Alzheimer's disease (AD). If the more mature deposits were derived from the diffuse deposits then there should be a close association between their spatial patterns in a brain region. In the majority of tissues examined, all deposit subtypes occurred in clusters which varied in dimension from 200 to 6400 μm. In many tissues, the clusters appeared to be regularly spaced parallel to the pia or alveus. The mean dimension of the primitive deposit clusters was greater than those of the diffuse, classic and compact types. In about 60% of cortical tissues examined, the clusters of primitive and diffuse deposits were not in phase, i.e. they alternated along the cortical strip. Clusters of classic deposits appeared to be distributed independently of the diffuse deposit clusters. Cluster size of the primitive deposits was positively correlated with the density of the primitive deposits in a tissue but no such relationship could be detected for the diffuse deposits. This study suggested that there was a complex relationship between the clusters of the different subtypes of β/A4 deposits. If the diffuse deposits do give rise to the primitive and classic varieties then factors unrelated to the initial deposition of β/A4 in the form of diffuse plaques were important in the formation of the mature deposits.

Notizen: Carey et al. utilized principal components analysis (PCA) to analyze frequency shift data obtained from piezoelectric sensors formed by coating quartz crystals with 27 different GC stationary phases and tested using 14 analytes. The objective of the analysis was to determine an optimal reduced set of coatings for detection of the analytes. The results were correlated with those obtained from cluster analysis. In this paper the data are re-analyzed using correspondence analysis (CA). The advantage of using CA include a symmetric treatment of sensor coatings and analytes and better identification of the representation of the analytes in terms of the detection components. The results obtained by the conjunctive use of PCA, a varimax rotation and cluster analysis were obtained by CA.

Notizen: Corona discharge (CD) treated polyethylene films were examined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and a variety of chemical derivatization techniques. The composition of the CD-treated surfaces were found to be relatively unaffected by aging at temperatures between 70 and 80°F. Ink adhesion testing of films treated under progressively more serve conditions indicated the efficiency of adhesion varied directly with the severity of treatment. Derivatization of CDtreated polyethylene films with pentaflurophenylhydrazine (PFPH) resulted in the formation of a stable hydrazone complex. The PFPH complex extends the detection limit for enolizable carbonyl groups ca. eight-fold and provides relative quantitation of the number of these groups on variously treated polyethylenes. Formation of the hydrazone complex destroyed ink adhesion, indicating that the complex had blocked the site responsible for chemical bonding to the ink. Adhesion of water-soluble printing inks to CD-treated polyethylene is a direct consequence of hydrogen bonding between enolic hydroxyls on the polymer surface and carbonyl groups of the ink.
