    Notes: We have developed a technique which permits high-yield fabrication of microbridges and low noise YBa2Cu3O7 superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) in epitaxial thin films. These SQUIDs operate over a wide temperature range extending from 4 K to close to the superconducting transition temperature. Measurements of an rf SQUID operating at 77 K give a peak-to-peak flux sensitivity of 36 μV/Φ0 and a flux noise at 10 Hz of 1.5× 10−4 Φ0/(square root of)Hz. Device yields over 80% have been obtained.

    Notes: We have measured very low microwave losses in microstrip resonators produced in a newly developed process which deposits high-temperature Er-Ba-Cu-O superconducting films by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition on both sides of a LaAlO3 substrate. These in situ films have critical temperatures of 92 K. High Tc superconductor (HTS) linear microstrip resonators demonstrated Q's of 3500 at 10 GHz and 4.2 K, corresponding to surface resistances less than 330 μΩ, which is 45 times better than measured silver resoantors. HTS meanderline resonators with a fundamental frequency of 1.3 GHz have Q's of 9600 at 4.2 K. Identical silver meanderline circuits have 300 times more surface resistance than HTS circuits.

    Notes: We have grown crystalline thin films of LaAlO3 using off-axis rf sputtering from a single stoichiometric target. The films grow epitaxially on SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 (100) substrates as well as on YBa2Cu3O7 thin films. We report on the growth conditions used to make these films, the properties of the films, and the properties of bilayer and trilayer structures containing both LaAlO3 and YBa2Cu3O7 films. Transmission electron microscopy cross-sectional and x-ray diffraction analyses indicate that all the constituent films in the multilayers grow epitaxially and that the interfaces between the films are sharply defined. Preliminary transport measurements on these multilayers show that LaAlO3 can be used for dielectric layers in a variety of high-temperature superconductor electronic circuits.

    Notes: Step-edge Josephson junctions are engineered grain boundary junctions fabricated using standard lithographic and film deposition techniques. We report a systematic study of 180 YBa2Cu3O7 step-edge junctions and identify a fabrication technique which results in a 90% yield of working junctions with critical current spreads from 30% to 50% (1σ/Ic-ave)over the entire substrate. Technically useful critical current values at 65 K can be obtained by adjusting YBa2Cu3O7 film thickness. IcRn values, approximately independent of film thickness, are ∼1 mV at 4.2 K and ∼0.1 mV at 65 K. Most junctions exhibit ideal electrical behavior in accordance with the RSJ model.

    Notes: The interpretation and interpretability of epidemiologic studies of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) depend largely on the validity of self-reported exposure. To investigate to what extent questionnaires can indicate exposure levels to ETS, an international study was conducted in 13 centers located in 10 countries, and 1,369 nonsmoking women were interviewed. The present paper describes the results of the analysis of self-reported recent exposure to ETS from any source in relation to urinary concentrations of cotinine. Of the total, 19.7 percent of the subjects had nondetectable cotinine levels, the median value was 6 ng/mg, and the cut-point of the highest decile was 24 ng/mg. The proportion of subjects misreporting their active smoking habit was estimated at between 1.9 and 3.4 percent, depending on whether cut-points of 50 or 100 ng/mg creatinine were used. Large and statistically significant differences were observed between centers, with the lowest values in Honolulu, Shanghai, and Chandigarh, and the highest in Trieste, Los Angeles, and Athens. Mean cotinine/creatinine levels showed a clear linear increase from the group of women not exposed either at home or at work, to the group of those exposed both at home and at work. Values were significantly higher for women exposed to ETS from the husband but not at work, than for those exposed at work but not from the husband. The results of linear regression analysis indicated that duration of exposure and number of cigarettes to which the subject reported being exposed were strongly related to urinary cotinine. ETS exposure from the husband was best measured by the number of cigarettes, while exposure at work was more strongly related to duration of exposure. After adjustment of number of cigarettes for volume of indoor places, a similar increase in cotinine (5 ng/mg) was predicted by the exposure to 7.2 cigarettes/8 h/40 m3 from the husband and 17.9 cigarettes/8 h/40 m3 at work. The results indicate that, when appropriately questioned, nonsmoking women can provide a reasonably accurate description of ETS exposure. Assessment of individual exposure to ETS should focus on daily duration and volume of indoor places where exposure occurred.

    Notes: Abstract Mature coconut embryos were germinated in a modified Murashige and Skoog medium and then cultured on BMY3 medium incorporating sucrose in the range of 4 to 8%. α-Naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) was added into the medium at concentrations ranging from 0 to 800 μM for periods of 4 to 24 weeks. Application of NAA for 4 weeks stimulated shoot growth, whereas application periods greater than 4 weeks had no significant effect. NAA in the range of 100–300 μM stimulated elongation of the primary root and the optimum concentration increased with increases in sucrose levels. Production of adventitious roots was stimulated by the addition of NAA with levels of 200 μM and above being the most effective. Increasing the sucrose concentration from 4% through to 8% stimulated root elongation in the absence of NAA and inhibited shoot growth whether NAA was present or absent.
