Notes: Summary A nitrogen balance study conducted in ceramic pots under net house conditions for four seasons showed that flooded rice soil leaves a positive nitrogen balance (N increase) in soil after rice cropping in both fertilized and unfertilized soil. Recovery of nitrogen from rice soil was more than its input in unfertilized soil, but it was reverse in fertilized soil. Incorporation of Azolla or BGA twice as basal and 20 days after transplanting (DAT) alone or in combination showed higher nitrogen balance and N2-fixation (N gain) in soil than in that where it was applied once either as basal or 20 DAT. Planted soil showed more N2-fixation than that of fallow rice, and flooded soil fixed more nitrogen in comparison to non-flooded soil in light but less in dark. Soil exposed to light fixed more nitrogen than that of unexposed soil in both flooded and non-flooded conditions.

Notes: Abstract TheAzolla pinnata (Vietnam) inoculated in rice field 10 days after transplanting (DAT) at a rate of 500 kg ha−1 fresh biomass along with phosphorus fertilizer application produced a mat on the water surface at 30 DAT. The three split application of phosphorus as 4.4, 2.2 and 2.2 kg P ha−1 applied at 10, 15 and 20 DAT, respectively produced 67% more biomass and 57% more Nitrogen inAzolla than those obtained by applying 8.8 kg P ha−1 at 10 DAT. Whereas, the two splits of phosphorus as 6.6 and 2.2 kg and 4.4 and 4.4 kg P ha−1 applied 10 and 15 DAT, respectively produced 20 and 33% more biomass and 14 and 27% more Nitrogen only. The three split application of phosphorus also increased the grain and straw yields, panicle number and weight, nitrogen concentration and its uptake in rice significantly over application of the entire amount once only. An increase of 10% grain yield and 13% straw yields was observed when 8.8 kg P ha−1 was applied in three splits rather than applied at one time. On the average an increase of 24% grain and 23% straw yields in rice were observed due toAzolla intercropping and 22% and 16%, respectively due to phosphorus application. The intercropping ofAzolla with rice along with phosphorus application also increased the fertility level of soil by increasing the total nitrogen, organic carbon and available phosphorus of soil.

Notes: Abstract Coulomb-nuclear interference in inelastic scattering of 35.4 MeVα-particles from the stable even Zr isotopes was studied. In the framework of a collective DWBA analysis isoscalar and electromagnetic transition rates for low lying 2+ and 3− states were derived. The experimentalB (E2) values are in good agreement with results obtained by purely electromagnetic methods. The deducedM n /M p ratios of the 2 1 + levels exhibit a surprisingly large increase with increasing neutron number.

Notes: Abstract Oxygen ions from a 2 MV tandem accelerator have been used in beam-foil spectroscopic studies of O II, O III and O IV in the wavelength region 2000–5000 Å. Excitation functions for relative level populations in O II, O III and O IV in the incident energy range of 1.2–3.75 MeV have been measured and interpreted in terms of the independent electron model. Mean radiative lifetime measurements for a number of levels including cascades 4631 Å feeding to 2450 Å and 4344 Å feeding to 2385 Å in O IV have resulted in consistent values. Lifetime measurements for some of the O II levels of astrophysical interest have been reinvestigated and significant deviations from earlier values were observed.

Notes: The possibilities for transport of sulfur through preformed oxide scales by both solution-diffusion and molecular gas (24) permeation mechanisms are examined thermodynamically to establish the limiting conditions under which each is viable. The results are tested, using nickel and cobalt specimens, and it is concluded that, although both mechanisms may operate in parallel, the permeation of gas molecules is the more dangerous since it can operate over wider ranges of gas atmosphere composition. The permeation of SO2 molecules throu through oxide scales growing on cobalt is clearly demonstrated.

Notes: A study was carried out to characterize the microstructure and distribution of some mechanical properties in reinforced reaction injection molding panels (RRIM). The panels were prepared under a variety of processing conditions. Scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and Fourier transform infrared analysis were employed for microstructure characterization. The following mechanical tests were carried out: dynamic mechanical, tensile, and impact. The results indicate significant relationships between processing conditions, microstructure, and mechanical properties. In particular, the skin/core structure of the panels and the size distribution of bubbles in the matrix have an important effect on the impact properties. Furthermore, the balance between the distributions of cure and crystallinity, which is difficult to define clearly, plays an important role in determining panel behavior.

Notes: Injection molded composites of polypropylene reinforced with short glass fibers were obtained under a variety of injection molding conditions. The microstructure of the moldings was determined using a variety of experimental techniques, including optical and scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy, and thermogravimetry. Thus, it was possible to obtain a detailed characterization of the crystallinity, morphology, and orientation distribution in the matrix, in addition to the distribution of fibers and their orientation of the fibers in the composite. The influence of molding conditions on the above microstructural characteristics is summarized in an effort to explain the experimental observations.
