Notes: Summary Cyclosporin A (CYA), when administered to CD-1 mice treated with a subdiabetogenic dose of Streptozocin (STZ), exacerbated the STZ-induced insulitis and elevated the plasma glucose levels, parallel to a reduction of the insulin content of the pancreas. The possible mechanisms of CYA-mediated aggravation of STZ-induced diabetes are discussed.

Notes: Summary Rat brain tumor was used as a model to evaluate radiation therapy with and without misonidazole. BD-IX rats were implanted intracerebrally with an ethylnitrosourea-induced glioma. Three series of experiments were performed, with radiation given 14 days after inoculation of the glioma clone. In each series, the following radiation doses were given: 500 rads once, 1,000 rads once; and 1,000 rads twice, every time with or without two different doses of misonidazole. Radiation therapy significantly prolonged survival when compared to the longevity of the control group. The dose of 1,000 rads given twice was highly effective and the life-span of tumor-bearing rats increased from 72% to 121%. Misonidazole plus irradiation negated the prolongation of survival, achieved with radiation therapy alone.

Notes: Abstract Undifferentiated gliomas of the brain stem were confirmed surgically in two young children. The patients were treated by aggressive irradiation of the entire neuraxis, similar to that administered for medulloblastoma. Therapy resulted in a good prognosis and there was no tumor recurrence.

Notes: Abstract The photoionization cross sections for multiply charged ions produced by 3p excitation of Kr and 4p excitation of Xe have been obtained by means of a time-of-flight mass spectrometer and synchrotron radiation. It is found that the main formation of doubly to quadruply charged ions in both Kr and Xe is caused from the each initialp-hole state through a Coster-Kronig transition followed by Auger or double Auger processes. The formation of singly charged ions in these excitation energy regions is caused by direct photoionization from outermost shell electrons in both Kr and Xe. Triply charged ions are prominently produced among the multiply charged ions. The quadruple photoionization cross sections show clearly the structures due to the Rydberg series, 3p −1 nl of Kr and 4p −1 nl of Xe. Their main structures were assigned to the 3p −1 nd series in Kr and the 4p −1 nd series in Xe.
