Notes: The specific lattice location of Zn in CdTe single crystals has been investigated by ion-channeling methods combined with particle-induced x-ray emission. Observing the asymmetry effects of channeling dips around the [110] axis and analyzing the asymmetry factors for host atoms and doped Zn atoms, it is revealed that almost all Zn atoms occupy the Cd sublattice sites, and Zn-doped CdTe crystals grown by vertical Bridgman methods appear to be almost completely free from the segregation of doped Zn atoms.

Notes: An extremely low-threshold current of 6 mA in cw mode at 22 °C was achieved in 1.55-μm InGaAsP/InP buried heterostructure distributed feedback lasers with a first-order grating and a normal cavity length of 300 μm. These lasers exhibited an average differential efficiency of 30% total at 4 mW without any coating on the facets, and a T0 (25–70 °C) value of 55 K. A spectral linewidth as low as 8 MHz at cw mode was obtained. The lasers showed high-speed pulse modulation response to 2.4 Gb/s (NRZ).

Notes: Annealing behavior of shallow donor-bound and acceptor-bound exciton lines in CdTe crystals grown by the Bridgman method was investigated by high-resoluton photoluminescence measurements at 4.2 K. The intensity of the neutral acceptor-bound exciton line (A0X) at 1.5896 eV, which was commonly observed in p-type CdTe, drastically decreased by annealing under Cd saturated atmosphere. By further subsequent annealing under Te saturated atmosphere, the A0X line recovered again. On the other hand, the intensity of the neutral donor-bound exciton line increased by annealing under Cd saturated atmosphere and decreased by the further annealing under Te saturated atmosphere. It was found that this change in the photoluminescence lines by the annealing process was reversible. These results strongly suggest that the A0X line at 1.5896 eV can be ascribed to the recombination of excitons trapped at Cd-vacancy/donor-impurity complexes.

Notes: Salivary glands of autoimmune MRL/1 mice were examined ultrastructurally and by immunoelectron microscopy to further characterize the Sjögren's syndrome-like disease in these animals. Major salivary glands from 12 female and 7 male MRL/1, two female MRL/n, and one female BALB/c mice were examined by electron microscopy and the glands from 4 female MRL/1 mice were subjected to immunoelectron microscopy in order to detect Lyt-1 and Lyt-2 positive lymphoid cells. Mononuclear cell infiltrates were not seen in the salivary gland from the BALE mouse and occurred rarely in glands of MRL/n mice. However, in MRL/1 mice, numerous lymphoid cells were present and acinar cells displayed low cytoplasmic density, cytoplasmic vacuolization and cellular lysis. Lymphoid cells were predominantly Lyt-1 positive although some Lyt-2 positive cells were observed. These results suggest that the MRL/1 mouse represents a useful model for the study of the pathogenesis of Sjogren's syndrome in man.

Notes: Two cases of Farber's lipogranulomatosis in siblings are reported. The clinical features included contractures of the limbs with swelling of the joints and subcutaneous nodules and erythematous infiltrated plaques. On histology there were many large foam cells in the dermis, and electron microscopy showed numerous large cells with round cytoplasmic lamellar and microtubular bodies.

Notes: Summary Living and growing microbial cells were immobilized by entrapping in synthetic resin gels prepared from their prepolymers, and used in the production of various useful substances. The production of the desired metabolites and also both the activity and the stability of the catalytic systems were seriously affected by the physico-chemical properties of the prepolymers, and those of the resin gels subsequently formed, such as gel network, hydrophilicity-hydrophobicity balance and ionic nature, as well as by the type of bioreactors. Hydroxylation of steroids and production of antibiotics, polypeptides and other biologically active substances, and the effects of gell properties on them are discussed as examples.

Notes: Summary The influence of hypoxia on hepatic mitochondrial function and energy status was studied in normal and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced cirrhotic rats. Under hypoxemia of 50 mm Hg-PaO2, hepatic energy status was suppressed both in normal and cirrhotic rats. After the reversal of hypoxia, it was completely restored in normal rats concomitant with a rapid elevation of hepatic mitochondrial redox state (overshoot phenomenon) and increase in the mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylative activity. By contrast, in cirrhotic rats, such an enhancement of mitochondrial function was not observed. It was clarified that cirrhotic liver mitochondria have little capacity to respond to the hypoxic stress. A lower resistance to hypoxic episode in cirrhotics might be attributable to the absence of mitochondrial enhancement which is a compensatory mechanism for the deranged energy metabolism of the liver.

Notes: Summary Dopamine-β-hydroxylase (DBH) immunohistochemistry was used to demonstrate the noradrenergic fibers and terminals in the anterior column of the rat lumbosacral spinal segments. PAP-positive varicose fibers were widely distributed in the gray matter with preferential accumulation in the nuclear regions containing motoneurons involved in the contraction of perineal striated muscles. Unmyelinated DBH fibers were composed of nodular enlargements (varicosities, 0.4–3.0 μm in diameter) and very fine, short intervals (intervaricose segments, 0.1–0.2 μm in diameter and 1.0–4.0 μm in length). DBH-positive dense products were electron microscopically often confined within small granular particles and less frequently within large granules. Additionally, in order to characterize the innervation pattern of noradrenergic fibers on dendritic bundles organized in the motoneuronal pools innervating the pelvic small muscles, semi-quantitative analysis was done in the area of the dorsolateral nucleus endowed with especially well-developed dendritic bundles. DBH terminals contacting with unreactive dendrites were more common (67.9%) than those with neuronal somata (15.1%), and the remainder (17%) had no contacts with surrounding neuronal elements. Furthermore, specialized synaptic formations were observed in only 20.1% of these nodules. The results suggest that bulbospinal descending noradrenergic neuron systems influence the functioning of pelvic muscles principally via the neuronal contacts with dendritic bundles in the spinal cord.
