Notes: Summary Coagulation parameters, platelet aggregation, and thromboxane production as well as metabolic parameters were measured in 31 diabetic patients, 12 without and 19 with clinically manifest late complications, and in 14 healthy control subjects. Spontaneous in vitro aggregation as well as ADP, collagen, and arachidonic acid induced aggregation were higher in both groups of diabetic patients, without an increase in thromboxane B2 production. In diabetic patients with late complications an increase in fibrinogen, fibrinogen cyanogen bromide peptide, factor VIII related antigen, C1-esterase inhibitor, and antithrombin III was observed in comparison to healthy subjects. Fibrinogen, C1-esterase inhibitor, and factor VIII related antigen were already elevated in diabetic patients without clinically manifest late vascular complications. No strict correlations were found between serum glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, and glycosylated albumin, on the one hand, and coagulation promoting or inhibiting factors, aggregation or thromboxane B2 production, on the other, in either control or diabetic subjects. Also no correlations existed between the coagulation parameters and the aggregation results. In vitro incubation of pooled normal plasma with different glucose concentrations had no influence on the methods by which the coagulation parameters were measured. These data indicate that rather early in the diabetic state many changes take place in different phase of the thrombostatic process, all resulting in an increased hemostatic diathesis.

Notes: Summary The prevalence of 1) hepatitis C virus (HCV), an agent likely to be responsible for parenter transmitted hepatitis non-A, non-B, 2) hepatitis B virus (HBV) and 3) human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection was studied in 211 patients with clotting disorders(78% of the patients had residual factor activities of ≤2%). Of these patients 71% were positive for HBV markers and 44% for HIV markers. Using a new ELISA technique, 80% were anti-HCV-positive. The prevalence of anti-HCV was greater in patients with more severe clotting disorders and was related to the total amount of replacement therapy received; the prevalence was less in older patients. Seroconversion after a single exposure to dry heat-treated factor concentrates was documented in 3 patients 3–4 months after exposure.

Notes: Summary The combined effects of ethinyl estradiol (EE) (0.5 µg/g s.c. once daily for 4 days) and tetracycline (TC) or doxycycline (DC) (50 µg/g i.v.) on liver weight and water content, serum transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, urea, triglycerides, and cholesterol as parameters of various liver functions were investigated in mice. It became apparent that depending on the parameter tested synergistic and antagonistic effects may occur, e.g., synergistic effects were observed with the serum transaminases and liver cholesterol; antagonistic effects were seen with the serum urea and serum cholesterol.

Notes: Abstract This study deals with the distribution and extent of hemophilic arthropathy (HA) in 52 adult patients suffering from severe hemophilia A. A clinical and radiological evaluation was undertaken and the results were compared. The limitations of the currently used radiological scoring system are discussed.

Notes: Abstract In a selected group of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients we confirm the expansion of a CD8+ T-lymphocyte subset, i.e., the CD8+/Leu7+ cells, which account for 30% of the lymphocytes, compared to 3% in the control donors. In addition, a CD8+ T-lymphocyte subset that coexpresses class II (DR) antigens, i.e., CD8+/DR+ cells, is also increased from 1.5% in controls to 27% in the HIV-infected patients. Using three-color immunofluorescence and flow cytometry we can demonstrate that the CD8+/Leu7+ and the CD8+/class II+ cells are not distinct but overlapping subsets. In the HIV-infected patients 42% of the CD8+/Leu7+ cells were strongly positive for class II and these CD8+/Leu7+/class II+ cells accounted for 13% of all lymphocytes. These findings indicate that the expanded CD8+/Leu7+ cells are activated and hence might be actively involved in immune defense in acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Description / Table of Contents: Metal-rich Gadolinium Hydride HalidesPreparation, structures, and thermal behaviour of gadolinium hydride halides GdXHn (X = Cl, Br, I; 0.7 〈 n 〈 0.9) are described. The preparation is done by heating Gd, GdH2, and GdX3 in sealed Ta ampoules to 900°C and 950°C. The arrangement of the heavy atoms corresponds to the 3 slab (X—Gd—Gd—X) structures of ZrCl and ZrBr. Besides these, a new stacking variant containing only 2 slabs in the identity period (2s-GdBrH0·69 and 2s-GdIH0·80; nomenclature of niobium dichalcogenides) is found.
