Notes: Abstract Histamine levels in the brain, measured fluorimetrically, were similar for rats killed by decapitation and microwave irradiation. However, enzymatic-isotopic assay yields 5–20 times higher value for microwave irradiation versus decapitation. Thin layer chromatography of the methylated products in the enzymatic-isotopic assay indicated the formation of artifacts following microwave irradiation. The results strongly suggest that a combination of microwave irradiation and enzymatic-isotopic assay is not suitable for histamine analysis in the rat brain.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary 1. In white mice, which received a solution of 15 % (w/v) ethanol instead of drinking water for 6 months, the contents of free fatty acids and esterified fatty acids in the serum as well as the content of fat in the liver increased. 2. In ethanol-treated animals, which had received theβ-adrenolytic Kö 592 for 24 hours before sacrifice, the increased contents of free fatty acids in the serum and of fat in the liver diminished while the esterified fatty acids in the serum remained elevated. 3. It is concluded, that an activation of the lipase of adipose tissue, caused by an increased liberation of catecholamines due to the ingestion of alcohol plays a part in the pathogenesis of fatty liver after prolonged alcohol consumption.
Notes: Zusammenfassung 1.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary If the sympathicβ-receptors in the hearts of white mice are blocked by propranolol the increase of heart rate in the beginning of asphyxia is prevented, the diminuation of the glycogen, ATP and phosphocreatine contents and the increase of orthophosphate are delayed, and the survival time of the heart is lengthened. On the other hand, the reanimation rate is reduced by propanolol. Therefore the sympathic stimulus seems to be a necessary condition for successful reanimation.

Notes: Summary Female white rats (initial weight 70 g) were treated orally for 6 months with an estrogen-progesteron combination at doses which inhibit ovulation. Although the animals were fedad libitum they showed a decrease of food intake and an inhibition of growth rate by 39% whereas their oxygen consumption remained unaltered. The growth of the kidneys was decreased in the same way as the body weight. Liver weight was, however, in the same range as that of the untreated controls. A hormone-induced anabolic effect on the liver becomes evident from an increase of DNA, RNA, and GPT contents. It seems that the GPT content is rised in order to enhance the formation of alanine from pyruvate and thus to increase the amino acid pool in the liver. The number of nuclei in the liver is slightly increased. Water, protein, glycogen, and triglyceride contents are normal.

Notes: Abstract To examine the combined hepatotoxic and nephrotoxic effects of cadmium and ethanol, rats maintained on an ethanol containing liquid diet (5% w/w) were given cadmium either acutely (3×1 mg/kg IP) or sub-acutely (about 14 mg/kg/day PO for 6 weeks). Parameters tested were cadmium, zinc and copper contents of blood and various organs, metallothionein (MT) contents, polysome profile of liver and kidneys, serum SDH and GPT levels and creatinine clearance. Ethanol reduced the hepatic MT contents without altering the polysome profile and the zinc and copper contents. Cadmium on the other hand raised the MT contents in liver and kidneys. This effect of cadmium predominated in the combined treatment. Morphological examination and functional tests (SDH, GPT, creatinine clearance) indicate that cadmium does not enhance the toxic effects of ethanol, and vice versa.

Notes: Summary The serum level, half-life and apparent volume of distribution of doxycycline were determined in geriatric patients. The serum level and apparent volume of distribution were higher than those reported for younger persons. The apparent volume of distribution was correlated with the serum iron and β-globulin levels. The possible influence of binding of doxycycline to serum iron on its pharmacokinetics is discussed.
