Notes: A peak power of 1 TW has been obtained in XeCl with a pulse width of 310 fs and the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) less than 3% in energy. The property of ASE was analyzed for different gains. Based on this analysis, the ASE coupling between stages was suppressed by using an appropriate spatial filter along with operating at a low-gain level. The saturation characteristics of UV dyes were investigated and analyzed for subpicosecond pulses. BBQ [4,4'''di(2-butyl-octoxy-1)-p-quarter-phenyl)] in cyclohexane showed the satisfactory performance for a saturable absorber in contrast and transmission.

Notes: Forty-nine cases of cutaneous malignant lymphoma were reviewed in order to analyze the clinicopathological features of these neoplasms. Excluding 13 cases of mycosis fungoides and 4 cases of cutaneous involvement of proven adult T-cell lymphoma/leukemia, the remaining 32 cases were further classified according to their pathological and clinical features. There were 12 primary cutaneous lymphomas, 15 cases of secondary cutaneous involvement of systemic lymphoma, and 5 cases of concurrent skin and lymph node involvement. Histologically, large cell lymphoma predominated in both primary and secondary cutaneous lymphomas. Immunohistochemical study using monoclonal antibodies reactive with B- and T-cells in paraffin sections revealed the cellular lineage in 30 cases. Nineteen cases were of T-cell origin and 11 cases were of B-cell derivation. The prognosis of these patients was rather poor; 25 patients died within 5 years. The predominance of T-cell lymphoma contrasts with a higher frequency of cutaneous B-cell lymphoma in Western countries. As the clinicopathological features of cutaneous lymphomas are diverse, it is suggested that cutaneous lymphomas should be classified and studied in a similar way to their nodal counterparts.

Notes: Based on histological structure and cellular formation of the endocrine pancreas (pars endocrina pancreatis) (PEP) or pancreatic islet (insulae pancreaticae), was divided into two types in the dog.One type of PEP was the islet of Langerhans. In the glandular lobule, the islet was surrounded by exocrine acini. The other type of PEP, in general exhibited a feature of a neuro-insular complex. It was found within the interlobular connective tissue of the pancreas. This type of PEP was attached to a nerve bundle or ganglion. In the pancreas of the immature dog, a large population of endocrine cells were recognized to form a blood islet within the neuro-insular complex.

Notes: Abstract A single picosecond ultraviolet pulse has been generated based on mode-locking of a dye laser pumped by a long pulse XeCl laser to serve as the input source for a high-power ps KrF laser system. A short-pulse uv dye laser (BBQ) pumped by an additional XeCl laser was used to selectively amplify a single pulse from a mode-locked pulse train with the pulse separation of 3.2 ns. The amplified single pulse was frequency-doubled to 248 nm with the pulse duration of 20 ps.

Notes: Abstract A 180-fs UV pulse has been generated based on a hybrid synchronously pumped mode-locked dye laser for a multiterawatt KrF laser system. The pulse width was measured by the single shot autocorrelation technique with the three-photon fluorescence of the XeF C-A transition. The pulse width broadening due to dispersive media was investigated. The results show that the observed pulse width broadening from 210 fs to 390 fs through the entire system is explained mostly by the linear dispersion of the optical elements for near-transform-limited input pulses.

Notes: Summary A case with severe pulsatile tinnitus of the left side caused by occlusion of the right common carotid artery was reported. Tinnitus in this case was supposed to be due to the rich blood flow of the external carotid systems developed as collateral routes resulting from the occlusion of the right common carotid artery. It subsided with the establishment of a bypass using a vein graft between the ascending aorta and the residual patent portion of the right common carotid artery.

Notes: Summary Unit activites of secondary vestibular neurons that selectively responded to stimulation of the anterior semicircular canal nerve (ACN) were recorded extracellularly in the anesthetized cat. Axonal pathways and projections in the spinal cord of the ACN-activated neurons were examined by recording their antidromic responses to stimulation of the lateral and medial vestibulospinal tracts (LVST and MVST), and the bilateral neck extensor motoneuron pools in the C1segment (C1dorsal rami [DR] motoneuron pools). In order to determine whether the neurons had ascending axon collaterals to the extraocular motoneurons, the contralateral (c-) inferior oblique (IO) motoneuron pool was also stimulated. Twenty-seven neurons sent their axons to the ipsilateral (i-) C1DR motoneuron pool via the LVST without any projection to the extraocular motoneuron pool. All the cells except one were located in the ventral part of the lateral vestibular nucleus. This pathway produced monosynaptic EPSPs with short time-to-peak and short half-width in C1DR motoneurons (16/16 motoneurons). Eight neurons sent axons to the i-C1DR motoneuron pool via the MVST without any to the extraocular motoneuron pool. Cell somata were located in the descending nucleus or in the ventral part of the lateral nucleus. These neurons did not produce postsynaptic potentials (PSPs) in any C1DR motoneurons. All thirty-five neurons sending axons to the c-C1DR motoneuron pool have ascending axon collaterals to the c-IO motoneuron pool.

Notes: Summary Unit activities of 148 secondary vestibular neurons related to the posterior semicircular canal were recorded extracellularly in anesthetized cats. Axonal projections of these neurons were examined by their antidromic responses to stimulation of the excitatory target motoneurons of the contralateral (c-) inferior rectus muscle (IR) and bilateral (bi-) motoneuron pools of longus capitis muscles, neck flexors, in the C1 segment (C1LC). The neurons were classified into 4 groups according to their axonal projections. The first group of neurons, termed vestibulo-oculo-collic (VOC) neurons, sent axon collaterals both to the c-IR motoneuron pool and to the c-C1LC motoneuron pool. The majority of them (72%) were located in the descending nucleus. The second group of neurons were termed vestibuloocular (VO) neurons and sent their axons to the c-IR motoneuron pool but not to the cervical cord. Most of them (86%) were located in the medial nucleus. The third group of neurons, termed vestibulo-collic (contralateral) (VCc) neurons, sent axons to the cC 1LC motoneuron pool via the contralateral ventral funiculus but not to the oculomotor nuclei. They were mostly (75%) found in the descending nucleus. The last group of neurons were vestibulo-collic (ipsilateral) (VCi) neurons, which gave off axons to the ipsilateral (i-) C1LC motoneuron pool via the ipsilateral ventral funiculus but not to the oculomotor nuclei. One of them also sent an axon collateral to the c-C1LC motoneuron pool. The majority of them (74%) were located in the ventral part of the lateral nucleus. It was also observed in some of the VOC and VCi neurons that they produced unitary EPSPs in the c-C1LC and i-C1LC motoneurons, respectively. Their synaptic sites were estimated to be on the cell somata and/or proximal dendrites of the motoneurons.

Notes: Summary We developed a new histochemical method based on endogenous oxidase activity for the detection of cutaneous nerves in guinea-pig lips. After the application of a reaction mixture containing 0.14 mM 3,3′-diaminobenzidine(DAB) and 15 mM nickel ammonium sulfate in Tris-HCl buffer (pH 7.6), many blue-black sensory fibers were observed, i.e., dermal nerve fiber bundles, perifollicular plexuses, Merkel-cell endings, and Meissner-like nerve endings. The autonomic fibers of the skin were not stained. Electron microscopy revealed that the reaction product was mainly localized on mitochondrial cristae. The addition of 0.01 M sodium azide completely inhibited the reaction. This technique is simple and preferentially stains sensory nerves.
