Notes: Summary The detection and characterization of oncogenes via RNA tumor viruses (or retroviruses) and the recognition of their location at breakpoints of chromosomal translocations which are frequently found in certain human neoplasms has promoted present understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying carcinogenesis. Oncogenes are cellular genes which can be transduced by RNA tumorviruses and induce malignant transformation under experimental conditions in vivo and in vitro. A role of retroviruses in human leukemogenesis is suggested by epidemiological observations and by the isolation of such viruses from several human T-cell leukemias and lymphomas (human T-cell leukemia/lymphoma virus or HTLV) as well as by biochemical association of retroviral markers with human leukemias. A role of HTLV has been suggested also in a human immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). In view of the well known role of many factors in carcinogenesis the concept of carcinogenesis as a multistep process as well as the concept of cocarcinogenesis and the role of cofactors other than viruses, such as radiation and chemicals, aging, hormones, graft vs host reaction, environmental factors etc., will have to be carefully considered.

Notes: Abstract For convergent sequences {x n,1 },...{x n,s } coupled by a system (2) of inequalities the optimal individualR-orders τ1,...,τ s are determined as the spectral radii of certain matrices composed of exponents appearing in (2).

Notes: Abstract Nonlinear equations are considered, where some input parameters are subjected to errors. By a class of monotone enclosing methods sequences of intervals are constructed, containing for each value of the perturbation parameter at least one zero of the problem. In finite dimensional spaces concrete realizations are given, e. g. of Newton-, Regula falsi- and Jacobi-Newton-type.

Notes: Abstract The computation of bestR-orders of sequences produced by iterative methods leads to the determination of the cone radius of certain concave operators. The main result of the paper is the representation of the cone radius as the infimum of spectral radii of all linear operators majorizing the concave operator. This characterization is of numerical interest.

Notes: Summary Fifteen male and 9 female patients between 14 and 41 years of age who suffered from acne were included in this study. Sixteen endocrine normal males and 27 females were used as controls. Skin and venous blood samples were taken from both normal and acne patients. Specific estrogen and androgen receptor levels were assayed under conditions resulting in the estimation of unoccupied receptor levels, and the charcoal technique was utilized. Testosterone serum levels were determined by radioimmunoassay. No estrogen receptors could be found in the normal skin. Of the male and female acne patients 93 and 78%, respectively, were estrogen receptor-positive, and their levels were between 11 and 275 fmol/mg cytosol protein. On the other hand, 31 and 48%, respectively, of the male and female acne patients were androgen receptor-positive, and their receptor levels were between 35 and 213 fmol/mg cytosol protein. A correlation of r=0.71 between estrogen and androgen receptor levels was noted in the female subjects, but no correlation was found in the male subjects. A correlation between testosterone serum levels and androgen receptor levels of r=0.77 and r=0.66, respectively, was noted in the female and male acne patients. The results of the present investigation suggest that androgen receptor levels play an important role in acne patients with normal testosterone serum levels. In addition, the presence of estrogen receptor levels in acne patients indicates a possible therapy by anti-estrogens or estrogens.

Notes: Summary Studies of xenon-enhanced CT for detecting cerebral demyelination have produced conflicting results. Therefore, we studied the effect of xenon inhalation on the CT appearance of five demyelinated plaques. The plaques and the surrounding white matter increased commensurately in attenuation during xenon inhalation. Therefore, xenon enhancement does not generally increase the sensitivity of CT for detecting cerebral demyelination.

Notes: Abstract The mandibular gland secretion of the mutillid wasp,Dasymutilla occidentalis, possesses three short-chained ketones-4-methyl-3-heptanone (4MH), 4,6-dimethyl-3-nonanone (4,6DMN), 4,6-dimethyl-3-octanone (4,6DMO)—and several unidentified compounds. This is the first report of 4,6DMN as a natural product and its synthesis is described. These ketones, which are either known to be ant alarm pheromones or are structurally very similar to ant alarm pheromones, appear to function as allomones against ants, major potential predators of mutillid wasps. The major secretory component, 4-methyl-3-heptanone, which was identified in females and/ or males of the species analyzed within the generaDasymutilla, Timulla, Traumatomutilla, andPappognatha, appears to constitute a chemical character of the defensive secretions of these genera.

Notes: Viscosity measurements were carried out as a function of pressure and temperature with solutions of polystyrene in eight (endothermal) θ-solvents at the respective critical composition by means of a Searle-type apparatus. A rolling-ball viscometer was used for the investigation of the pure solvents. In all cases the viscosity coefficient increases in a more or less exponential manner when the pressure is raised. For θ-conditions, the volumes of activation of the solutions exceed that of the pure solvent by typically 10-15%. The exact amount of this extra efffect stemming from the presence of the polymer and its variation with temperature can be qualitatively correlated with the heats of mixing. The ratio of the viscosity of the solution at 1000 and 1 bar, respectively, can be varied for a given solvent power (θ-temperature) by the choice of the solvent from ca. 2 (cyclopentane) to 4 (trans-decalin). Within a given system, the maximum effects that can be realized by a change of the solvent power via the variation of temperature ranges from ca. 3 to 6 (tert-butylacetate).

    Notes: Abstract In a partially ordered space, the method xn+1 = L+x n + − N+x n - − L−y+ + N− y n - + r, yn+1 = N+y+ − L+y n - − N−x n + + L−x− + t of successive approximation is developed in order to enclose the solutions of a set of linear fixed point equations monotonously. The method works if only the inequalities x0 ≤ y0, x0 ≤ x1, y1 ≤ y0 related to the starting elements are satisfied. In finite-dimensional spaces suitable starting vectors can be computed if a sufficiently good approximation for the fixed points is known.
