    Notes: Abstract The probable existence of oscillating chemical reactions has been attracting some interest in recent years for their possible role in explaining certain biological phenomena. Perhaps the simplest model of oscillating reactions is that of Lotka (1910), which consists of a chain of autocatalytic reactions. Two “reactor systems” in which such a chain of reactions could take place are considered in this work and are called homogeneous and compartmental models, respectively. The differential equations governing the temporal behavior of the reacting species are solved on an analog computer, and the conditions under which sustained oscillations occur are obtained and discussed. Comparisons of the solution obtained in the two models are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Sixteen patients with abdominal neuroblastoma had 99m Technetium Phosphate Compounds (99m TC-PC) bone scans as a preoperative evaluation for metastatic disease. Ten patients (62%) had extraosseous tumor uptake while six patients (38%) did not. There was no difference in the incidence of tumor calcification, tumor necrosis or hydronephrosis in the two groups. However, VMA levels were significantly higher in the group with extraosseous tumor uptake. Various bone seeking radionuclides are compared to 99m TC-PC and possible mechanism for extraosseous uptake of such radionuclides are postulated. Awareness of the frequency of such uptake should reduce the possibility of errors in the interpretation of bone scans in patients with neuroblastoma.

    Notes: Summary The basis of peripheral blood lymphopenia observed in patients with chronic alcoholism and liver disease was investigated by examining the effect of sera of these patients on in vitro transformation of normal human peripheral blood lymphocytes. A positive correlation was demonstrated between the serum inhibition of phytohaemagglutinin- and pokeweed mitogen-induced transformation and the degree of lymphopenia. Thus serum factors may contribute to the observed lymphopenia by inhibiting lymphocyte production in vivo.

    Notes: Abstract Adult female Sprague-Dawley rats were prepared with chronic cortical and muscle electrodes and i.v. cannulas, made tolerant to and physically dependent on morphine, and trained to lever press for i.v. morphine self-injections to maintain dependence. Methadone or l-alpha-acetylmethadol (LAAM) was then substituted for morphine in some of these rats. During self-maintained dependence on either morphine or methadone, head shakes appeared and increased in frequency before lever pressing for selfinjections. In contrast, there were fewer head shakes during LAAM dependence, which were evenly distributed over the entire duration of the interinjection interval. These findings suggest a relationship between head-shake distributions, drug-seeking behavior, and the pharmacodynamics of these three narcotics.

    Notes: Summary 1. Protection by codeine 20 mg, dextromethorphan 30 mg, noscapine 30 mg, and placebo against citric acid-induced cough was determined in eighteen healthy subjects. 2. Drug differences occurred at 2 1/2 h following ingestion of the drugs but not at 1 1/4 h. 3. Only codeine 20 mg had a greater antitussive action than placebo, but dextromethorphan 30 mg also did not differ from codeine 20 mg. 4. This technique may offer a useful screening test for the activity of new potential antitussive compounds in man.

    Notes: Abstract A class of model problems in nuclear reactor economics is defined and shown to be equivalent to a linear optimal control problem to which present versions of the maximum principle apparently cannot be applied. It is shown that the search for an optimal control can be restricted tocontrols of maximum fuel utilization (Comfu), and that theComfu's are in a one-to-one correspondence with the functions which satisfy certain inequalities and are solutions of a nonlinear Volterra integral equation containing the value of the cost functional as a parameter. In the general case, one can establish an iterative procedure, involving solution of the integral equation at each iteration, for approximating the optimalComfu. For some important special cases, a point on the solution corresponding to the optimalComfu is knowna priori, and thus the optimalComfu can be obtained by solving the integral equation only once. Some possible generalizations of the original economic model are also discussed.
