Notes: Abstract The sulphur nutrition of three isolates ofAlternaria tenuis Auct., isolated from the diseased leaves ofMangifera indica L.,Musa paradisiaca L. andPsidium guajava L., was studied. They were grown on the medium devoid of sulphur as well as on media containing various sources of sulphur viz., ammonium sulphate, sodium hyposulphite, sodium thiosulphate, magnesium sulphate, potassium sulphate, potassium metabisulphite, zinc sulphate and thiourea. Sodium hyposulphite, sodium thiosulphate, magnesium sulphate, potassium sulphate and zinc sulphate were generally found to be satisfactory sources for the growth of all the isolates under study. Poor growth of the different isolates was observed on the medium devoid of sulphur.

Notes: Abstract Three isolates ofA. tenuis isolated from the diseased leaves ofMangifera indica l. Musa paradisiaca l. andPsidium guajava l. were investigated. They were grown on different sources of nitrogen viz., potassium nitrate, sodium nitrate, calcium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, sodium nitrite, ammonium sulphate, ammonium chloride, glycine, DL-valine, L-glutamic acid, urea, thiourea, L-asparagine and peptone. They were also grown on the medium lacking nitrogen. A wide variation was observed in the growth and reproduction of the different isolates. The growth of all of them was good on potassium nitrate, calcium nitrate, glycine, DL-valine, L-glutamic acid, L-asparagine and peptone but the sporulation was satisfactory on calcium nitrate only. Sodium nitrite supported moderate growth of banana leaf isolate whereas there was no growth of the other two isolates. None of the organisms could grow on the medium lacking nitrogen as well as on thiourea. The results obtained with the isolates under study have been compared with those of earlier investigators and it has been clearly established that the different isolates ofA. tenuis could show marked differences in their nitrogen requirements.

Notes: Summary Vertical velocities at the 800, 600 and 400 mbar surfaces over India have been calculated, making use of a 3-level geostrophic baroclinic model. Further, the effects of non-adiabatic heating is included into the model and vertical velocity due to diabatic heating is obtained for the same period. A numerically obtained vertical velocity field due to baroclinicity and diabatic heating is seen to be in agreement with the observed weather patterns.

Notes: Summary A study was made of the nature of variation and changes in association for characters related to yield, development and disease resistance in two sets of progenies one set derived through biparental mating (A-series) and the other by traditional inbreeding (selfing) from the F2 onwards (T-series), in a 22 × 22 diallel of dwarf derivatives of Pennisetum typhoides S & H. Comparison of means and variances within and between the two groups of progenies (A and T-series) and with those of released hybrids (HB-1, HB-2, HB-3, HB-4) for seventeen characters (six related to development, six to productivity, three to vegetative growth and one each to earliness and disease incidence) showed significant variation among the lines of the two series for synchrony of tillering, earliness, disease incidence, chlorophyll depth, grain hairiness, tiller number, plant height, length of earhead, grain yield and grain weight. The A-series selections were significantly superior to the T-series for most of the characters, indicating the effectiveness of selection in biparental matings compared with selection in selfed progenies for these traits. Many of the A-series (220 out of 800) selections were also superior to the existing released hybrids. Changes in the magnitude and nature of association among twelve important characters in the two populations were more favourable in the biparental matings: of 66 possible correlation coefficients examined, 25 cases were found with changes in favour of selections from biparental matings (A-series). These changes were probably due to the breakage of unfavourable linkages and changes in phase of linkage, and indicate the usefulness of biparental matings in the simultaneous improvement of the population for several attributes.

Notes: Summary The heart rate ofAnabas is about 40 beats/min when breathing water and air. Tachycardia occurs as the fish takes an air breath and the rate declines as the breath holding continues but water breathing stops. Bradycardia is observed during this later phase. By the time the next air breath is taken, the heart rate has dropped to 15–30 beats/min. The heart rate of a fish breathing normoxic water but prevented from surfacing is about 42/min. Bradycardia occurs in hypoxic water under similar conditions. Tachycardia is observed in active fish when breathing hypercarbic water and air. On exposure to air bradycardia is found in resting fish but tachycardia occurs during activity. In air,Anabas usually repeats a breath when the heart rate drops to 15–25 beats/min. Tachycardia occurs immediately following an air breath. Heart rate then returns over a period of 3–6 mins to the normal resting level of 30 beats/min. The gas composition of the suprabranchial chambers has been measured and its relationship with the occurrence of an air breath, tachycardia and bradycardia is described. The experimental results are discussed in relation to the anatomy of the blood supply to the respiratory organs. The possible role of respiratory gases and pH in the control of breathing and perfusion is also discussed.

Notes: Summary The amount of Sr++ adsorbed by humus material from a swamp soil using89Sr++ (SrCl2) isotopic method was determined in order to explore the possibility of deviation from the equivalent ion exchange at low pH values. At low pH values there are relatively large distances between the ionized acidic groups. Theoretically Sr++ are not able to neutralize the surface completely if the ion exchange takes place in an equivalent ratio. Under the present experimental conditions a decreased ratio between Sr++ and Cl− in the wash solution during the outwashing of the excess of electrolytes seems to indicate the binding of SrCl+ to the ionized groups thus deviating from theoretical equivalent ion exchange.

Notes: Summary With a view to examine the effect of pre-sowing exposure of seeds to gamma radiation (3000 r) on the drought resistance behaviour of barley plants (Hordeum vulgare L., Var. K12), a pot-culture experiment was conducted at a glasshouse attached to the Department of Plant Physiology. The plants were subjected to wilting treatments at tillering stage and were maintained so for ten days. Subsequently, observations on survival capacity, growth behaviour and physiological changes were made during the wilting period. The data obtained were subjected to statistical analysis. Reduction in soil moisture causes a set-back in the physiological status of barley plants and thereby inhibits the crop growth. Presowing exposure of seeds to gamma-radiation induced drought tolerance in barley plants. It not only improved the growth behaviour but also maintained an active metabolism in plants even under wilting condition. Although the investigation is of preliminary nature, but it certainly offers newer scope of research towards useful utilization of gamma radiation in relation to drought tolerance in crops.
