Notes: A cDNA clone of 525 bp corresponding to the 3′-untranslated region of insulin-like growth factor-I was isolated from a human placenta library. The sequence of this clone extended 200 nucleotides downstream from the previously reported 3′-end of IGF-IA cDNA, indicating the existence of IGF-IA transcripts having an even larger 3′-untranslated region. By using this clone for RNA transfer blot hybridization, it was shown that this longer 3′-untranslated region is included in the 7.5- and 5.0-kb transcripts, but not in the 1.1- and 0.9-kb transcripts. It is also apparent that transcripts bearing the extended 3′-untranslated sequence are highly expressed in human placenta.

Notes: The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film-forming properties of a number of novel azobenzene dye polymers are reported. The linear and second-order non-linear optical properties of the films have been studied using ellipsometry, visible spectroscopy and Pockels effect measurements. As monolayers, the effective electro-optic r-coefficients ranged from 1 to 8.7 pm V.-1 When one of the polymers was combined in an alternate layer film (230 layers in total), an r13-coefficient of 13 pm V-1 was achieved. This is one of the highest values reported for a ‘thick’ LB film.

Notes: Plasma activation is a method that takes the advantage of low temperature plasma to immobilize the bioactive materials. An active immobilized glucose oxidase membrane was obtained via plasma-initiated polymerization of acrylic acid. The obtained immobilized enzyme is very active and stable. After 100 tests, the response error of the glucose sensor is less than 5% and its linear detecting range is 0-300 ppm. A hydrophilic PP film treated by Ar or NH3 plasma was used for the preparation of the immobilized glucose oxidase membrane. The obtained immobilized enzyme is also very active and stable. After 180 tests, the response error of the glucose sensor is less than 4% and its linear detecting range is 0-300 ppm. Furthermore, SEM was used to study the mophology of the glucose oxidase membranes obtained via both methods. And ESCA was used to analyze the plasm-initiated polymerization products and the plasma-treated PP films so as to obtain the optimum conditions for the immobilization of bioactive materials.

Notes: Copolyesters containing naphthalene structure were synthesized from bis(hydroxyethyl)naphthalate (BHEN) and various aralkyloxy diols. The starting bis(4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)aryl) compounds were derived from a nucleophilic substitution of various bisphenols with ethylene carbonate in the presence of potassium iodide (KI). Copolyesters having intrinsic viscosities of 0.50 to 0.60 dL/g were obtained by melt polycondensation in the presence of metallic catalysts. The effects of reaction temperature and time on the formation of copolyesters were investigated in order to obtain an optimum condition for copolyester manufacturing. The optimal reaction temperature and time were found to be 290 to 310°C and 90 to 120 min, respectively. Most of these copolyesters have better solubilities than polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) in aprotic solvents such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone or m-cresol. The thermal properties of the copolyesters were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Glass transition temperatures of these copolyesters were in the range of 90 to 141°C, and 10% weight loss values in nitrogen were all above 460°C. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: In this paper, the blends of the carbon dioxide copolymer, poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC), with nitrile rubber (NBR) were studied by DSC, DMA, TEM and TG. PPC can enhance the mechanical properties of NBR, while oil resistance and tensile set at break of NBR/PPC systems were as good as that of NBR. The coagent of triallylisocyanurate or maleic anhydride with carbon black can much improve the curing efficiency of dicumyl peroxide in NBR/PPC systems. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: In this study characteristics of polynorbornene (PNR) and ethylene-propylene terpolymer (EPDM) blends were examined in terms of compatibility, cocuring, and ozone resistance. For most of the blend compositions, two glass transition temperatures (Tg) at about -30 and -50°C were observed from differential scanning calorimetry data for both uncured and cured samples. The transitions correspond to the Tg's of the component polymers, suggesting that the blends are microheterogeneous. The two-phase blends are difficult to cocure as evidenced by the fact that tensile strengths of the blends, when plotted as a function of blend composition, deviate from the linear or additive behavior. Improved cocuring of the blends, however, can be achieved by matching the cure rates of the components. The ozone resistance of the blends containing 25 percent or more EPDM was substantially improved as compared with that of PNR. Therefore, the newly developed PNR can be used for applications requiring ozone resistance by properly blending it with EPDM.

Notes: The pyrazinoporphyrazine system 13 (metal-free, zinc and copper derivatives) has been synthesised by tetramerisation of 2,3-dicyanopyrazine monomer unit 10. The structure of 13a-c has been established by 1H NMR spectroscopy, UV/Vis spectrophotometry, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The electrochemical redox behaviour of 13a-c is strongly solvent dependent. The expected two-stage oxidation of the tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) units of 13a-c was observed in a range of solvents; in addition, oxidation and reduction of the pyrazinoporphyrazine core of the metal-free derivative 13a was detected in benzonitrile. On excitation of 13 in the Q-band region no fluorescence was observed, which is presumably the consequence of intramolecular charge transfer between the TTF moieties and the excited state of the central porphyrazine. Molecular modelling studies on 13a and 13c are reported. During the course of this work, the novel TTF macrocycles 11 and 20 were synthesised; their X-ray crystal structures reveal severely bent TTF units, the conformations of which are discussed in detail. The X-ray crystal structures of the bis(1,3-dithiole) systems 15 and 18 have also been determined.

Notes: Three-dimensional Stokes flow through a thin screen which has a regular array of holes with two orthogonal axes of symmetry has been studied. The governing equation is simplified by the Roscoe potential and solved by an efficient eigenfunction expansion and collocation method. The resistance is found for circular and square holes in square arrays, and circular and hexagonal holes in triangular arrays.

Notes: A population-balance-equation model is employed for the analysis of liquid-liquid extraction columns. This model considers drop breakage, coalescence, and exit phenomena for the drop phase caused by drop-drop and drop-continuous phase interactions. Drop breakage and coalescence rates are employed from a previous study on liquid dispersions in stirred-tank contactors. A drop exit frequency is developed based on a stochastic modeling approach. The model is tested by drop size distribution and dispersed-phase volume fraction (holdup) data obtained for a multistage column contactor of pilot-plant scale. Steady-state drop size distribution and transient holdup measurements are obtained by a photomicrographic technique and an ultrasonic technique, respectively. The model can predict flooding of the column. The effect of mass transfer on the hydrodynamic parameters of the contactor is also examined. The population-balance-equation model can be used for the control of extraction columns and can be extended to include mass-transfer calculations for the prediction of extraction efficiency.

Notes: A viscous lamina of given mean thickness flows down a wavy incline. Assuming low Reynolds number and small perturbations due to the wavy striations, the velocity profiles and the free surface profile are determined. It is found that the amplitude and phase shift of the free surface depend, in a complicated manner, on the surface tension and the wave length and orientation of the wavy striations. The motion of a particle on the free surface experiences drift which is also a function of the surface tension, the amplitude, wave length and orientation of the wavy incline.
